Your posting of the results of quiz #5 had expired by time > I got back, so I'd appreciate it if you would send me a copy of the posting. Here are the results of The Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #5. Remember that each title was worth 10 points, and each artist was worth 10 points. Song titles were to be exact for 10 points, with partial credit given for imperfect answers. In general, points were not removed for 'creative' spelling. But points may have been taken off if your spelling changed an artist's name (e.g., 'Shep' instead of 'Sheb'). Also, some of you may not have realized that the lyrics were listed in alphabetical order by artist. This ordering should be used as a clue. Some people gave the right title but guessed the wrong artist even though the artist named was out of alphabetical order - it should have been clear it was a wrong guess! You might want to watch out for this in future quizzes. Congratulations to Laura Eppright, who came in first with a very high score of 459, identifying 23 of 25 songs correctly! I'm very impressed that someone who is only 26 years of age knows 50s-60s oldies so well! Second and third place went to Ron & Sally Crandall and Howard Teitelbaum respectively, who also had impressive scores! Most others had pretty respectable scores as well. Judging from the distribution of the scores, it looks like the quiz was about the right level of difficulty. Comments on this to me are welcome. ########################################################################### [place] score Name & E-mail address age team [ 1] 459 LE -Laura Eppright, leppright@attmail.att.com 26 1 [ 2] 430 RC -Ron & Sally Crandall, RMC@PSUVM.PSU.EDU 39 2 [ 3] 420 HT -Howard Teitelbaum, hat@floyd.att.com 32 1 [ 4] 339 RS -Rick Schubert, rns@tortuga.SanDiego.NCR.COM 38 2 [ 5] 334 TL -Terry Lewis, terry@scubed.scubed.com 40+ 1 [ 6] 330 DM -Dan Murphy, danielm@tekgen.bv.tek.com 37 1 [ 7] 310 JK -John Kupec, jwk@scripps.edu 32 1 [ 8] 280 SG -Steve Goldman, actuary@ncoast.ORG 32 1 [ 9] 252 CR -Chris Reeve, clr@ksr.com 45 1 [10] 210 KD -Karen Dworkin, karen@uhura.att.com 25 1 [11] 198 D2 -Dave Mack, sono!mack@Sun.COM 27 1 [12] 169 JA -John Altinbay, altinbay@alc.com 39 1 [13] 163 RK -Rich Kulawiec & Deb Smith, rsk@juniper.circ.upenn.edu -- 2 [14] 133 NN -The NCR Nomads, bhoule@se-sd.sandiego.ncr.com -- ? I apologize for this, but I don't think that it affected anyone's score! I'm so young and you're so old, This my darling I've been told #01) Anka, Paul: "Diana", 1957 She forgot all about the library, Like she told her old man now #02) Beach Boys: "Fun, Fun, Fun", 1964 Whatever happened to all the good times we used to have, The times we cried and laughed, I want to know, I want to know #03) Buckinghams: "Don't You Care", 1967 And in this car, Our love went much too far, It was exciting as thunder, Tonight I wonder where you are #04) Christie, Lou: "Rhapsody In The Rain", 1966 Give me one kiss and I'll be happy, Just, just to be with you #05) Dave Clark 5: "Because", 1964 You'll be scratching like a hound, The minute you start to mess around #06) Coasters: "Poison Ivy", 1959 What does every man look at first? #07) Contours: "First I Look At The Purse", 1965 Kiss by kiss and hand in hand, That's the way it all began, Soon we found a perfect plan for love #08) Crests: "Step By Step", 1960 You don't understand, That a girl like me can love just one man, 3000 miles, that's how far you'll go, And you said to me: "Please don't follow" #09) Fifth Dimension: "Go Where You Wanna Go", 1967 [This was the Fifth Dimension's first hit. Several people mentioned that the Mamas & Papas also did this song (originally). As a matter of fact, this song was written by a member of that group - John Phillips; However, if you answered only with Mamas & Papas for the artist, you got partial credit, since it does not fit alphabetically.] I'll be strong, I'll try to carry on, Although you know it won't be easy when you're gone #10) Four Seasons: "Opus 17 (Don't You Worry 'Bout Me)", 1966 I hear them whispering when I walk by: "He's gonna break her heart and make her cry" #11) Gore, Leslie: "Maybe I Know", 1964 But if you leave me a hundred times, A hundred times I'll take you back #12) Isley Brothers: "This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You)", 1966 She's the terror of Colorado Boulevard #13) Jan & Dean: "Little Old Lady From Pasadena", 1964 We were all alone, You told me that you cared, And I never will forget, How happy I was that day were then #14) Majors: "A Wonderful Dream", 1963 [Obviously, the last line doesn't seem right. Correction: the last line should have read "How happy I was that WE WERE THERE". Howard Teitlebaum pointed this out. This lyric was never very clear or understandable (to me). Thanks to Howard, this lyric makes much more sense now! Anyway, Howard was the only person to correctly identify this song] A candy colored clown they call the sandman, Tiptoes to my room every night, Just to sprinkle startdust and to whisper, "Go to sleep everything is alright" #15) Orbison, Roy: "In Dreams", 1963 When the twilight is gone, You come into my heart #16) Platters: "My Prayer", 1956 Like a river flows, Surely to the sea, Darling so it goes, Some things are meant to be #17) Presley, Elvis: "Can't Help Falling In Love", 1961 But happiness is just an illusion, Filled with sadness and confusion #18) Ruffin, Jimmy: "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted", 1966 [Several people incorrectly guessed "Reach Out (I'll Be There)" by the Four Tops, which does contain lyrics that are very close! (Notice that "Four Tops" doesn't fit alphabetically) The similar lines from "Reach Out" are: "Your life is filled with much confusion, Until happiness is just an illusion" ] Darling there will never be another, 'Cause I love you so, Don't you ever leave me, Say you'll never go #19) Sedaka, Neil: "Oh! Carol", 1959 I promise you that I, Will never make you cry, This love will be eternally, Cross my heart and hope to die #20) Skyliners: "This I Swear", 1959 Get up in the morning, And I'm filled with desire, No no I can't stop the fire, Love is a real live fire #21) Supremes: "Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart", 1966 [Howard Teitelbaum pointed out that The last word in the lyrics should be WIRE, not fire. Oh well, sorry!] You know I love you, I always will, My mind's made up, By the way that I feel #22) Troggs, "Love Is All Around", 1968 We strolled along together, I tell you, I need you oh so much, I love, love you my darling, Can you tell it in my touch? #23) Tymes: "So In Love", 1963 [The title "So Much In Love" is also acceptable, I've seen this song referred to both ways] He may not be a movie star, But when it comes to being happy, We are #24) Wells, Mary: "My Guy", 1964 Well I saw the thing coming out of the sky It had one long horn, one big eye #25) Wooley, Sheb: "Purple People Eater", 1958 [Boy, many of you sure mangled this artist's name! But, everyone knew the song!] ################################################################### Thanks to everyone for playing!!! Hope you had as much fun with this as I did in putting it together!
