I generally like to have most lyrics be in the easy to moderate range, and have a couple of hard ones. But, judging the difficulty of the quiz in advance isn't easy, much of the time my intuition about what would be easy and hard is entirely wrong. In this quiz, I thought that #02 might be relatively hard, and #25 would be easy. Well, looking at the results, it was the other way around! Howard Teitelbaum and Joe Haertell finished tied for first place this time. And Ron & Sally Crandall would have come in first if Ron had double checked his entry before sending it to me. He told me he accidently forgot to type the artist in #13, which he did know. Dan Murphy had his usual strong performance as well. Anyway, congratulations to all of you for an excellent job! In article <7360@emory.mathcs.emory.edu>, titled "Ain't She Sweet", colm@mathcs.emory.edu (Colm Mulcahy) wrote: "Jack Yellen, who wrote the words to Ain't She Sweet and a lot of other long forgotten songs *way* back (largely in the 20s I understand) died, aged 97."] I'll never get married, Never get married, You know that's not my scene #02) Brooklyn Bridge featuring Johnny Maestro: "Worst That Could Happen", 1968 [Years before forming the Brooklyn Bridge, Johnny Maestro was lead singer with the Crests] Oh but your lips were thrilling, Much too much too thrilling, Never before were mine so strangely willing #03) Cleftones: "Heart And Soul", 1961 Now I know you're not the only starfish in the sea #04) Cyrkle: "Red Rubber Ball", 1966 [A couple of people noted that this song was written by Paul Simon] He out-bopped the buzzard and the oriole #05) Day, Bobby: "Rock-in Robin", 1958 We're havin' fun, Sittin' in the back seat kissin' and a-huggin' with Fred #06) Evans, Paul with the Curls: "Seven Little Girls Sitting In The Back Seat", 1959 If you want him to be, Always by your side, Take his hand tonight, Swallow your foolish pride #07) Exciters: "Tell Him", 1962 [According to Joe Haertel, only the original 45 and the original LP have the hit version of this song. All reissues have used a different mix!] I don't know if we're in a garden, Or on a crowded avenue #08) Flamingos: "I Only Have Eyes For You", 1959 [Blasphemy! A couple of people answered with Art Garfunkel as the artist here. Although Garfunkel did a cover version of this song in 1975 and by coincidence happens to fit alphabetically, it is outside the timeframe of this quiz: 50s/60s only!] Come along and have a ball, A regular free for all #09) Jamies: "Summertime, Summertime", 1958 Who in the world wouldda ever known what Colombus could do, If Queen Isabella hadn't hocked her jewels in 1492 #10) Jones, Jimmy: "Good Timin'", 1960 Streets full of people -- all alone, Rows full of houses -- never home #11) King, Jonathan: "Everyone's Gone To The Moon", 1965 I memorized every line, And I kissed the name that you signed #12) Lester, Ketty: "Love Letters", 1962 Joined her in her dancin' spree Felt my spine a-tingle, Held her tight and close to me Man I'm glad I'm single #13) Little Anthony & the Imperials: "Shimmy, Shimmy, Ko-Ko-Bop", 1959 My arms are missing you, My lips feel the same way too #14) Martha & the Vandellas: "Jimmy Mack", 1967 [Does anyone know the song on flip side of the "Jimmy Mack" single: "Third Finger, Left Hand"? It was, and still is, a very big regional hit here in the Philadelphia area. It never charted nationally, however.] Bright stars and guitars and drive-ins on Friday night #15) Murmaids: "Popsicles and Icicles", 1963 [Joe Haertel and the Crandalls mentioned that this was written by David Gates, who later formed the group Bread. At the time this was written, Gates was only 15 years old!] Guardian angels up above, Take care of the one I love #16) Mystics: "Hushabye", 1959 I'll be wonderful, Do just what I'm told, I'll do anything for you #17) Purify, James & Bobby: "I'm Your Puppet", 1966 I remember when I first kissed him, He touched my hand and then I couldn't resist him #18) Raindrops: "The Kind of Boy You Can't Forget", 1963 Once you told me long ago, To the prom with me you'd go, Now you've changed your mind it seems, Someone else will hold my dreams #19) Robbins, Marty: "A White Sport Coat (And A Pink Carnation)", 1957 Friends ask me am I in love, I always answer yes, Might as well confess, If the answer's yes #20) Scott, Linda: "I've Told Every Little Star", 1961 It's just that I'm not in the market, For a boy who wants to love only me #21) {Linda Ronstadt & the} Stone Poneys: "Different Drum", 1967 [Joe Haertel and the Crandalls noted that this song was written by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees] She's so sweet she makes my mouth water #22) Strangeloves: "I Want Candy", 1965 With all the charms of a woman, You're just a baby in disguise #23) Union Gap featuring Gary Puckett: "Young Girl", 1968 [Philip Ethier , a Minnesotan, informed me that Gary Puckett and Robert Zimmerman both hail from the same small town: Hibbing, Minnesota. Robert Zimmerman? Who's that? Oh yes, you might have heard of him by his stage name: Bob Dylan!] You're looking real good like a woman now, Your mind hasn't gotten the message somehow #24) Vee, Bobby & the Strangers: "Come Back When You Grow Up", 1967 [Everyone missed the "& the Strangers" part of the artist's name, as it does appear on the original 45.] [Philip Ethier also informed me that Bobby Vee's hometown, St.Cloud, is in Minnesota, too! I guess I never realized just how much musical talent is concentrated there! After all, the Trashmen, also from Minnesota, gave us that musical masterpiece "Surfin' Bird" ('bird bird bird, bird is the word') :-) ] Here she comes in her wedding gown, Looking like a queen, She's been my only love, Since she was thirteen #25) Williams, Danny: "White On White", 1964 [This song is apparently not as well known as I thought it might be.
