Rick & Kathy Schubert were right behind them with only three missed songs, and The Old Folks at DG and Bob Dorin & Chris Reeve tied for third place with scores of 400. Newcomers Norm & Kathy Crandall & Carol Thorton (my brother, sister-in-law and her sister, respectively) were fifth, and Dan Murphy and Howard Teitelbaum gave their usual strong performances. Ed Ames was perhaps more memorable as a member of the Ames Brothers singing group from the 40s and 50s, and for co-starring on the "Daniel Boone" TV show.] I'd like to hear somebody say I'll give you my love each night and day #02) Anka, Paul: "Lonely Boy" (1959) [1] I know just what to say I answer right away #03) Blane, Marcie: "Bobby's Girl" (1962) [3] Keep in mind your mother's gonna Need your help a whole lot more Than she ever did before #04) Cher: "You Better Sit Down Kids" (1967) [9] [An obvious case of gender confusion on Cher's part (maybe what Sonny's been saying about her is right) :-) ] Some day, Darling You'll come to me When you want to settle down #05) The Chiffons: "One Fine Day" (1963) [5] [The Zralys mentioned that "One Fine Day" was written by Carol King, who did her own version of the song in 1980.] It seems we stood and talked like this before We looked at each other in the same way then #06) Dion & the Belmonts: "Where or When" (1960) [3] Electrical banana Is gonna be a Southern craze #07) Donovan: "Mellow Yellow" (1966) [2] [Thanks to everyone who pointed out, quite rightsly, that the craze (or "graze", as Donovan says it) will be "sudden" rather than "Southern" (someone even suggested "certain" craze). Despite the confusion over the lyrics, this song had the most correct answers. Howard Teitelbaum and Dave Cochran mentioned that Paul McCartney reportedly whispers on the song. Howard also noted a cover version of the song by Senator Bobby & Senator McKinley (a Bobby Kennedy/Sen. Everett Dirkson parody)!] It's five o'clock in the morning And I'm already gone #08) Dorsey, Lee: "Working in the Coal Mine" (1966) [8] [The second line should have been "I'm already up & gone"] All I hear is the sound Of rain falling on the ground #09) Faithfull, Marianne: "As Tears Go By" (1964-65) [22] [Written by Jagger/Richards. Faithfull had a temptuous relationship with Mick during the 60s. The Stones also hit #6 their own version of the song in 1966.] It creeps and leaps And glides and slides across the floor #10) The Five Blobs: "The Blob" (1958) [33] [From the horror movie featuring Steve McQueen as a teen trying to save the world from a slimy substance. The song was composed by Burt Bacharach(!) and performed by a single studio musician, Bernie Knee, who used overdubs.] It's like thunder, lighting The way you love me is frightening #11) Floyd, Eddie: "Knock on Wood" (1966) [28] I'd work my fingers to the bone I'd never roam #12) Four Tops: "Something About You" (1965) [19] [The Barry, Joe & Mark team was the only one to answer this correctly] Oh-oh, when he wants to be alone I just let him be But I know that soon enough He will come back to me #13) Gore, Lesley: "That's the Way Boys Are" (1964) [12] [L.G. in one of her less liberated moods. Maybe she was trying to placate her male fans after earlier declaring in song "You Don't Own Me".] The smile from your lips Brings the summer sunshine The tears from your eyes Bring the rain #14) Helms, Bobby: "My Special Angel" (1958) [7] [Also a #7 for the Vogues in 1968.] Well I started walking her way She belongs to that man, Jose' #15) Jay & the Americans: "Come a Little Bit Closer" (1964) [3] [Howard Teitelbaum & Dan Murphy suggested that the Jose' is a "Bad" man rather than "that" man.] I was just a boy when I threw away my toys I found a new pastime to dwell on #16) The O'Kaysions: "Girl Watcher" (1968) [5] Here's lovin' your skies Reflecting the sunlight In my lover's eyes #17) Oliver: "Good Morning Starshine" (1969) [3] [From the musical "Hair"] Do the chairs in your parlor Sing to me and then Do you gaze at your doorstep And picture me there? #18) Presley, Elvis: "Are You Lonesome To-night?" (1960) [1] [Thanks to the respondents who pointed out that line two of this lyric is way off base. The line should be "Seem empty and bare". I wanted to include an Elvis song because of the recent anniversary of his death, but I'm obviously no expert on this song from the King of Enunciation.] You're my reason for laughin', for cryin' For livin' and for dyin' #19) The Righteous Brothers: "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration" (1966) [1] She stepped out of the rainbow Golden hair shining like moonglow Warm lips soft as a soul Sittin' here by me #20) Rivers, Johnny: "Summer Rain" (1968) [14] The shadow on the wall Tells me the sun is going down #21) Rogers, Kenny & the First Edition: "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town" (1969) [6] Have a good time But remember There is danger In the summer moon above #22) The Tempos: "See You in September" (1959) [23] [A cover (and better known) version by the Happenings hit #3 in 1966. A few people gave gave them as the artist which, although correct, got no credit because it doesn't fit alphabetically :-( ] She said "Hey, Baby, I got alot to do-ooh It takes me hours and my homework's thru-ooh" #23) Tom & Jerry: "Hey, Schoolgirl" (1957-58) [49] [The original incarnation of Simon & Garfunkel, recorded when they were 15 year old high school students. Howard T. mentioned that Paul Simon played this at the Concert in Central Park.] You may do a lumbo or tango Mombo, calypso, or stand Lights are turned down low You go hand in bm-m-m-m-m-m-m #24) The Turbans: "When You Dance" (1956) [33] [The Schuberts mentioned that this song appears on Billboard's Top R&B Hits of 1955 CD. Guess it was probably a bigger hit on the R&B charts than on the Pop charts, where it only hit #33. The Schuberts also mentioned that the Turbans actually wore turbans when performing.] Don't try to spare my feelings Just tell me we are through #25) Walker Bros.: "Make it Easy on Yourself" (1965) [10] [The Walker Bros are sometimes referred to as a British Invasion group because they achieved early success there, and charted many more songs there than in the U.S. They were actually from Los Angeles. This turned out tied as the second toughest song on the quiz.] ############################################################################# Thanks for the participation/comments. GOLQ #15 will be posted within 24 hours. --Ron Crandall rmc@psuvm.psu.edu
