They were chal- lenged this time by Dan Murphy who had a score of 437. Other excellent scores were turned in by the Schuberts, Norm & Kathy & Carol, the Old Folks at DG, Irish & Mike, Bob Dorin & Chris Reeve, and the CIRT team. Congratulations are also due to several other teams for high scores on a tough quiz. This is my last oldies quiz (for a while anyway). I'll be handing the baton off to Carole Hanrahan, who is "Irish" of the Irish and Mike team. Thanks much to Carole for agreeing to take a run of the quiz. It's been fun trying to stump you all, but it should still be fun to go back to being a participant rather than quiz author. Thanks to all for participating in all the quizzes! So goodbye, it's been sweet Even though, incomplete #01) Beau Brummels: "Just a Little" (1965) [8] [Although the Beau Brummels had a British Invasion sound, they were from San Francisco. They selected the name "Beau Brummels" so that their records would appear right next to the Beatles' records on store racks.] It made us feel so groovy We fell in love Just like in the movies #02) The Buckinghams: "Hey Baby (They're Playing Our Song)" (1967) [12] We walk together hand-in-hand 'Cross miles and miles of golden sand #03) Chad & Jeremy: "Yesterday's Gone" (1964) [21] [This turned out to be a difficult song with only five correct answers, partly because I mistakenly put the lyric in present tense (it should have been "we walked ..."), making it hard to guess the title from the meaning of the lyrics.] Well he never washed his face And he never combed his hair He had axle grease embedded underneath his finger nails #04) The Cheers: "Black Denim Trousers" (1955) [6] [The Cheers had as a member the late Burt Convy, who later became famous as a comedian and game show host. Barry Silk mentioned that "Black Denim Trousers" was an early success for the songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who wrote lots of songs for the Coasters and Elvis Presley. There was supposed to be some parallels between the plight of subject of this song and the fate of James Dean, who died in an auto crash shortly after the release of the song.] See my love through loneliness Save my love for sorrow I see in you my onliness Come in here tomorrow #05) Darin, Bobby: "If I Were a Carpenter" (1966) [8] [The Schuberts pointed out that the last two lines of the lyrics should be I've given you my onliness Come give me your tomorrow One respondent gave Johnny Cash as the artist. I checked the Billboard book and, sure enough, Johnny Cash and June Carter did a cover of the song in 1970. Unfortunately, the artist doesn't quite fit alphabetically, and is also just outside the 1955 to 1969 GOLQ allowable time period.] I felt so messy standing there My daddy's shorts were everywhere #06) The Detergents: "Leader of the Laundromat" (1965) [19] [A parody of "The Leader of the Pack", by the Shangrilas. The Detergents included Ron Dante, who was the brainchild of the later Archies and Cuff Links bubble-gum groups.] There's Technicolor and Cinemascope A cast out of Hollywood #07) Drifters: "Saturday Night at the Movies" (1964) [18] But if the first two letters Are ever the same Drop them both #08) Ellis, Shirley: "The Name Game" (1964-65) [3] I been searchin' for a girl Bobby socks and a pony tail When I saw her standing there I had to pick her up I couldn't fail #09) (Wild Card - Any answer gets full credit - Explanation below) [My apologies on this one. This song was featured in the movie "American Graffiti" and is actually "She's So Fine" by Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids, a Rock & Roll/Doo-Wop revival group. I was under the mistaken impression that the lyrics were from the song "So Fine" by the Fiestas. Although "She's So Fine" is a nice song that was released as a single and sounds like an oldie (and even happens to fit alphabetically), it was recorded in 1973 specifically for the movie and therefore doesn't fit the criteria for inclusion in a GOLQ. Therefore, I'm treating this as a wild card and giving all respondents full credit.] I'll be home I'll be beside the phone Waiting for you #10) Foundations: "Build Me Up Buttercup" (1969) [3] Although you're never near Your voice I often hear #11) Four Tops: "Baby I Need Loving" (1964) [11] Along the sand We'll walk the shores together now Yes, hand-in-hand It's gonna be fair weather now #12) Gore, Lesley: "California Nights" (1967) [16] You gave to me your all and all And now I feel ten feet tall #13) Hebb, Bobby: "Sunny" (1966) [2] [This song was written about Hebb's father] He's got a chauffeur That's a genu-ine dinosaur #14) Hollywood Argyles, "Alley-Oop" (1960) [1] [The Hollywood Argyles were the creation of Gary Paxton. Paxton wanted to release the song as a solo but was under contract with Brent Records as Flip from Flip and Skip. The group's name was created from the names of the streets on the corner where the studio was located (Hollywood and Argyle. The musicians were said to be in a state of enibriation when the song was recorded. Barry Silk mentioned that the song was written by Dallas Frazier, who was more famous for writing the song Elvira. Frazier had a minor hit with Elvira in 1966, and the Oak Ridge Boys had a big hit with it in 1981.] Asked her for this dance And then she obliged me #15) Left Banke: "Pretty Ballerina" (1967) [15] [Barry Silk mentioned that this song was much more popular than "Walk Away, Renee" in the Chicago area.] Even though you hurt me I still love you, it's true Even though I know that you Will hurt me again #16) The Newbeats: "Run, Baby, Run (Back Into My Arms)" (1965) [12] [One of the great run-on sentences of Rock & Roll! This was the toughest song on quiz with only the Barry, Jay & Mark team getting the song. The Newbeats are better known for their 1964 #2 hit, "Bread and Butter".] I was working in a lab A'Late one night When my eyes beheld an eerie sight #17) Pickett, Bobby "Boris" & The Crypt-Kickers: "Monster Mash" (1962) [1] [Minus one point for leaving off the "The Crypt-Kickers"] Well, I'm gonna have it all some day If ya just hang on to my hand I'll break some rules along the way Girl, ya ya gotta understand #18) Revere, Paul & The Raiders: "Hungry" (1966) [6] As we grow older No need to fear When you need me I'll be here #19) Robinson, Smokey & The Miracles: "More Love" (1967) [23] [The second toughest song on the quiz, with only two correct answers] Everybody's talkin' about a new way of walkin' #20) Rooftop Singers: "Walk Right In" (1963) [1] There's a green one And a pink one And a blue one And a yellow one And they're all made out of ticky-tacky And they all look the same #21) Seeger, Pete: "Little Boxes" (1964) [70] [I was impressed by the number of people who knew this song! The "Little Boxes" are the hum-drum houses of Suburbia. The Schuberts mentioned that Seeger was a member of the legendary folk group, The Weavers.] Well, I can't promise That I'll spend a day with you I can't promise that I'll find a way with you #22) Spanky & Our Gang: "Like to Get to Know You" (1968) [17] In the mist of the memories You wander on back to me Breathin' my name with a sigh #23) Tempo, Nino & April Stevens: "Deep Purple" (1963) [1] You bounced my heart around You don't even touch the ground #24) Vee, Bobby: "Rubber Ball" (1960-61) [6] [Co-written by Gene Pitney] You're with me tonight I'm captured by your by your charms Oh pretty baby, Won't you hold me in your arms? #25) Kathy Young with the Innocents: "A Thousand Stars" (1960) [3] [Barry Silk mentioned that this song was originally done by the Rivileers, a Doo-Wop group.] ############################################################################### Thanks again to all for playing. Irish said she would post try to post GOLQ #18 shortly. ---Ron Crandall rmc@psuvm.psu.edu
