He asked that any comments be directed to him (bcs@prc.unisys.com). Hmmm, what should I change my score to? Rick Schubert ____________________________________________________________ RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #23 Congratulations to Jamie & the gang for the great job they did on this difficult quiz! The Schuberts, both Crandall families, and Bob Dorin's team turned in a mighty fine performance as well! I think this quiz has been the hardest one to date. It seems that almost everyone has scored lower than they usually do. The reason I think this one has been harder than others is that I chose about 10 songs that don't get much, if any, airplay on most oldies radio stations these days. Thanks to everyone who was brave enough to send in their entry! Joe made a similar comment. Rick added that it was the "B" side of "Please Please Me"] It was a teenage wedding And the old folks wished them well You could see that Pierre did truly love the madamoiselle #03) Chuck Berry: "You Never Can Tell" (1964) [14] But we'll forgive them Because we love them After all is said and done #04) Jimmy Charles & the Revelletts: "A Million To One" (1960) [5] [I'm not sure if the original 45 was labelled with "& the Revelletts". Specifying Jimmy Charles with or without them gets full credit] You don't want money You don't want a diamond ring Hey hey hey #05) Dave Clark 5: "Any Way You Want It" (1964) [14] [Rick comments: Dave Clark was a stuntman in films and formed the group to raise money for his soccer team, the Tottenham Hotspurs.] Although there are oceans we must cross And mountains that we must climb I know every gain must have a loss So pray that our loss is nothing but time #06) The Classics: "Till Then" (1963) [20] Well you are the one that makes me glad Any other one that makes me sad When someday you want me Well, I'll be there, wait and see #07) The Crickets: "Maybe Baby" (1958) [17] [Half credit for specifying Buddy Holly as the artist. Because of contract arrangements, all records released on the Brunswick label were released as The Crickets, and all records released on the Coral label were released as Buddy Holly. Both labels were subsidiaries of Decca Records.] Just the two of us here on a blanket of love Writing love letters in the sand As long as there's sand and as long as there's a sea #08) The Excellents: "Coney Island Baby" (1962/63) [51] [Only the Schuberts were able to get this one!] I'll go on living And keep on forgiving Because, you were my first love #09) Four Seasons: "Ronnie" (1964) [6] [Jamie comments that Frankie Valli's daughter, Toni, currently manages 3 oldies nightclubs in New Jersey. Four months ago, she married Gerry Polci, 40, her father's drummer for the last 20 years and the lead singer of the Four Seasons' 1976 hit "December, 1963 (Oh What A Night)"] I thought I saw you yesterday I could have sworn you passed my way But it was too good to be true And there was nothing I could do #10) Brian Hyland: "Run, Run, Look and See" (1966) [25] [This one had everyone stumped, probably because it rarely get played on standard oldies radio -- but I think it's one of Brian's better songs] Put your arms around me And swear by the stars above You'll be mine forever In a heaven of love #11) The McGuire Sisters: "Sugartime" (1957/58) [1] [Not exactly in the rock-and-roll category, but since Rick used a Pat Boone song last quiz, I figured I throw this one in. And, Rick, it is my understanding that the Moonglows did not cover this song :-) ] I only know what I know The passing years will show You've kept my love so young and so new #12) Chris Montez: "Time After Time" (1966) [36] Doctor and a lawyer and an Indian Chief Now they all dig that crazy beat #13) The Johnny Otis Show: "Willie and the Hand Jive" (1958) [9] What kind of girl is this? She's never been out on a date What kind of girl is this? She's never ever come home late #14) The Outsiders: "Respectable" (1966) [15] [Written by the Isley brothers, whose own version of this song never hit the national pop charts] Your eyes, your lips, set me on fire Your love, your kiss, my one desire I want only, only, only I want your love #15) The Paradons: "Diamonds and Pearls" (1960) [18] Goofy Eddie's gonna bring his ukulele Groovy Freddy's gonna dance all night with Sherry I can't wait 'til I see you there #16) The Pixies Three: "442 Glenwood Avenue" (1964) [56] [Rick notes that this did better than the "A" side, "Cold Cold Winter," which only made it to #79] Just a minute ago your love was here All of a sudden it seemed to disappear Sweetness was only heartaches camouflaged #17) Smokey Robinson & the Miracles: "The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage" (1967) [20] [This song was used in the soundtrack of the movie "American Gigalo"] He gave me the eye While just passing by I treated him unkind But he didn't seem to mind #18) The Supremes: "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes" (1963) [23] Did you ever see a night so long When time goes crawling by The moon just went behind a cloud #19) B.J. Thomas & the Triumphs: "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" (1966) [8] [His first of many charted hits for Billy Joe Thomas. Irish notes that this song was also a big hit for Hank Williams Sr. Rick adds that this was written by Hank Williams in 1949, recorded by Johnny Tillotson in 1962 and by Terry Bradshaw (Pittsburgh Steelers) in 1976. Minus 1 point for not including 'The Triumphs'] I have nothing to hope for I have nothing to cling to Life for me has no meaning, darling If I have to live it without you #20) Bertha Tillman: "Oh My Angel" (1962) [61] Oh what a wonder this magic spell I'm under This feeling that I feel Is it really real? #21) The Tokens: "Tonight I Fell In Love" (1961) [15] [The Tokens first charted hit] It's alright to go to a party It's alright to have some fun It's alright to take in a movie But don't let him be the one #22) Travis & Bob: "Tell Him No" (1959) [8] Some other girls are filling your head with jive So now you're acting like you don't know that I'm alive #23) Mary Wells: "The One Who Really Loves You" (1962) [8] [Rick notes that this was written and produced by Smokey Robinson] Well I told her mama and her papa too Just exactly what I want to do I wanna get married on a night in June And rock and roll by the light of the silvery moon #24) Larry Williams: Bony Maronie (1957) [14] [Rick notes that Larry Williams wrote and originally recorded two songs that were later covered by the Beatles: "Dizzie, Miss Lizzie" and "Slow Down"] Come tomorrow, will I be older? Come tomorrow, make me a soldier Come tomorrow, may I be bolder than today #25) The Yardbirds: "Shapes Of Things" (1966) [11] ############################################################################### Now for the list of favorite oldies stations: Altoona, PA WALY 104FM Boston, MA WODS Denver, CO KOOL-105 Eugene, OR KDUK 1280AM (Kool-Gold network) Long Branch, NJ WRLB 107.1FM New York City WCBS 101.1FM Newcastle (England? There are songs that barely hit the national pop charts (or not at all) during the 50s/60s that were very popular in some areas, but never got played in other areas of the country. There were several reasons for this, one of them being that, unlike today, there were lots of small independent record companies who could only afford to distribute and advertise their records locally. These regional hits sold enough copies in their local area to qualify for the national charts. That's why some lower ranked songs seem alot more popular to some people than a higher ranked song. This might explain why "Till Then" is very popular in the Northeast, but not very well known elsewhere. I think that "Coney Island Baby" is another example of a regional hit - only popular in the NYC/ New Jersey/ Philly area, but not nationally. ############################################################################### Here's the "familiarity index" feature that Rick started last quiz. This chart ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized. The second number on the line denotes how many people identified it (total points divided by 20 points, to one decimal place). Here it is: Rank #ID 01 17.0 #02) Beatles: "From Me To You" (1964) [41] 02 14.0 #03) Chuck Berry: "You Never Can Tell" (1964) [14] 03 13.8 #07) The Crickets: "Maybe Baby" (1958) [17] 04 13.5 #09) Four Seasons: "Ronnie" (1964) [6] 05 11.0 #25) The Yardbirds: "Shapes Of Things" (1966) [11] 06 10.0 #04) Jimmy Charles & the Revelletts: "A Million To One" (1960) [5] 07 9.7 #19) B.J. Thomas & the Triumphs: "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" (1966) [8] 08 8.8 #13) The Johnny Otis Show: "Willie and the Hand Jive" (1958) [9] T09 8.5 #24) Larry Williams: Bony Maronie (1957) [14] T09 8.5 #14) The Outsiders: "Respectable" (1966) [15] T11 8.0 #23) Mary Wells: "The One Who Really Loves You" (1962) [8] T11 8.0 #05) Dave Clark 5: "Any Way You Want It" (1964) [14] T11 8.0 #01) American Breed: "Bend Me, Shape Me" (1967/68) [5] 14 6.5 #06) The Classics: "Till Then" (1963) [20] T15 6.0 #15) The Paradons: "Diamonds and Pearls" (1960) [18] T15 6.0 #21) The Tokens: "Tonight I Fell In Love" (1961) [15] T17 5.0 #22) Travis & Bob: "Tell Him No" (1959) [8] T17 5.0 #11) The McGuire Sisters: "Sugartime" (1957/58) [1] 19 4.0 #18) The Supremes: "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes" (1963) [23] 20 3.5 #12) Chris Montez: "Time After Time" (1966) [36] T21 2.0 #20) Bertha Tillman: "Oh My Angel" (1962) [61] T21 2.0 #17) Smokey Robinson & the Miracles: "The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage" (1967) [20] T21 2.0 #16) The Pixies Three: "442 Glenwood Avenue" (1964) [56] 24 1.0 #08) The Excellents: "Coney Island Baby" (1962/63) [51] 25 0.0 #10) Brian Hyland: "Run, Run, Look and See" (1966) [25] I don't see any big surprises here. It is interesting to note that a song that charted at position 41 ("From Me To You") is significantly more well known than a number one song ("Sugartime"). Of course, I expected the Beatles' song to be highly recognized. ############################################################################### Note: When I specified the list of contributors to the GOLQ#23 rules, I inadvertently left out the most important name: Rick Schubert. Rick is the father of the Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz series and I'd like to thank him for giving us many hours of pleasure (or is that frustration? :-) with his idea. It is also via these quizzes that I have had the opportunity to 'meet' and correspond with several devout oldies fans like myself via e-mail. Again, thanks Rick, and sorry about the omission! Thanks again to all for playing! Howard Teitelbaum's posting of GOLQ#24 is imminent. ---Barry Silk (bcs@prc.unisys.com)
