As you will notice, song #02 should have preceeded song #1. Hope this didn't inconvenience anyone.] People say that love's a game A game you just can't win If there's a way I'll find it someday #01) Paul Anka: "Put Your Head On My Shoulder" (1959) [2] [Jamie Lubin noted that this song was about Annette Funicello] Sacrifices I will make I'm ready to give as well as take One thing I need is your respect One thing I can't take is your neglect #02) Animals: "Don't Bring Me Down" (1966) [12] [Jamie comments that this was written by Carole King & Gerry Goffin] You're kinda naughty But you're naughty and nice #03) Frankie Avalon: "Ginger Bread" (1958) [9] [Rick Schubert notes that the backing was performed by The Four Dates. According to Jamie, Frankie signed his first recording contract at age 11] You know that every southern belle is a Mississippi queen #04) U.S. Bonds: "New Orleans" (1960) [6] [The first charted hit for Gary Anderson (aka Gary US Bonds). All subsequent records were labelled 'Gary US Bonds'. I gave full credit for Gary U.S. Bonds] But she was too young to fall in love And I was too young to know #05) Sam Cooke: "Only Sixteen" (1959) [28] [Jamie notes that Sam Cooke once produced an album for Muhammed Ali (Cassius Clay at the time). As a matter of fact, I remember reading that Ali's favorite recording artist was Sam Cooke. Dr. Hook covered this song in 1976.] Won't you take a look at me now You'd be surprised at what you'd see now I'm everything a girl should be now 36-21-35 #06) Cookies: "Girls Grow Up Faster Than Boys" (1963/64) [33] [Written and produced by Gerry Goffin. Arranged by Carole King] That night we fell in love Beneath the stars above That was a lovely summer night #07) Earls: "Remember Then" (1962/63) [24] I don't call you honey Even though you're sweet It's really not the name for you Sweetheart, angel, lover, all are incomplete Only one name will do #08) Echoes: "Baby Blue" (1961) [12] [Howard Teitelbaum mentions that the Echoes have a strange way of spelling out the title of this song as they sing it: 'Bbaby Bblue"] He don't know it But she cheats on him With a boy like that its such a sin #09) Lesley Gore: "She's A Fool" (1963) [5] Sweet is the honey from the honeycomb Sweet are the grapes from the vine But there's nothing as sweet as you darling And I hope someday you'll be mine #10) Hollywood Flames: "Buzz-Buzz-Buzz" (1957/58) [11] [Don Fausett comments that Bobby Day (of "Rock-In Robin" fame) was in this group. Rick adds that the group also included Earl Nelson, who recorded as Bob & Earl] You're gonna love it I'm gonna love it Day time, night time, your time, my time #11) Tommy James & the Shondells: "Gettin' Together" (1967) [18] Kiss me Kiss me and maybe you will see Paradise is waiting for you and me #12) Barbara Lewis: "Make Me Your Baby" (1965) [11] Got a date and I won't be late Pick her up in my eighty eight Shag on down by the union hall When the joint starts jumping now I have a ball #13) Little Richard: "Rip It Up" (1956) [17] [Rick Schubert pointed out that the first line should have been: "Got ME a date ..."] Every time I see that girl You know I want to lay down and die #14) Mamas & The Papas: "I Saw Her Again" (1966) [5] You saw me standing alone Without a dream in my heart Without a love of my own #15) Marcels: "Blue Moon" (1961) [1] [Howard Teitelbaum noted that this song was written by Rodgers & Hart; according to Whitburn's "Top Pop Memories 1890-1954," there were three Top-5 versions in 1935: a #1 by Glen Gray & The Casa Loma Orch., a #2 by Benny Goodman & His Orch., and a #5 by Al Bowlly & Ray Noble's Orch.] Here's your old friendship ring I-I can't wear it no more Here's your old love letters I-I can't read 'em anymore #16) Martha & the Vandellas: "Come and Get These Memories" (1963) [29] Your life stands still The minute he goes You count the hours Just hoping he shows #17) Miracles: "(Come 'Round Here) I'm The One You Need" (1966) [17] [I was surprised that this song had everyone stumped! Only the Schuberts were able to identify the artist. One of the few Miracles' songs not written by Smokey Robinson. It was written by the songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland who were responsible for a substantial number of Motown hits] Am I crying because you left me, yeah Or am I crying because I don't know what to do, yeah, yeah One day you said we'd never part Am I sad or am I glad? #18) Patty & the Emblems: "Mixed-Up, Shook-Up Girl" (1964) [37] Oh little girl he's never dreaming of you He'll break your heart, you'll wait and see So don't you cry now Just tell him goodbye now #19) Bobby Rydell: "Forget Him" (1963/64) [4] [From the musical "Bye Bye Birdie"] What full lips you have They're sure to lure someone bad #20) Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs: "Lil' Red Riding Hood" (1966) [2] [Howard Teitelbaum comments that Sam's real name is Domingo Samudio, and "shamming" was evidently some dance move he used on stage. For an out-of-print, never-reissued record that never gets played on standard oldies radio, a lot of folks knew this song (or guessed at it correctly)! - I certainly didn't expect the Miracles' song to stump everyone! It charted at position 17, just like Little Richard's "Rip It Up", except that lots of people knew Little Richard. - I'm pleasantly pleased that several couple of doo-wop songs were well recognized. "Blue Moon" was the most recognized! Apparently, lots of other artists recorded this song, but the Marcels created the doo-wop version. It was also nice to see that another doo-wop songs "Remember Then" and "Church Bells May Ring" were fairly well recognized considering their low chart positions. - It's interesting to note that a song that only reached chart position 28, "Only Sixteen" was second best recognized, while 5 songs near the bottom of this recognition list (20-25) had higher chart positions! ############################################################################# For those of you still tuned in, Jamie has provided this information extract from WCBS-FM NY/NJ/CT listener-voted surveys of top 500 songs of all time: Song 1991 1982 1979 1972 --------------------------------- ---- ---- ---- ---- Put Your Head On My Shoulder #194 #142 #34 #141 Remember Then #21 #107 #49 #85 Baby Blue #188 #142 She's A Fool #480 Rip It Up #474 Blue Moon #56 #100 #226 #16 Mixed-Up, Shook-Up, Girl #465 Forget Him #343 #313 Church Bells May Ring #329 #176 #205 #211 ############################################################################# Thanks again to all for playing!
