RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #32 Congratulations to the team of Jamie (Lubin), Terry & Charlie, for claiming first place honors, and to Ron and Sally Crandall, who finished a close 2nd. From the comments I received, this was one of the tougher quizzes in the GOLQ series. It wasn't meant to be as difficult as it turned out. With the clarity of 20/20 hindsight, however, I see I may have leaned too heavily on songs that peaked in the teens and twenties. None of the songs stumped all who entered, though, and a few were picked correctly by nearly all entrants. Thanks to all who entered! I enjoyed being quizmaster and I hope to do it again soon. I will strive for a better balance in my next quiz. Watch for GOLQ#33, coming soon from Jamie Lubin! _____________________________________________________________________________ Place ID # on Score Name team Age(s) 01 420 JT- Jamie, Terry & Charlie 3 21-47 02 400 RS- Ron & Sally Crandall 2 41,41 03 300 BJ- Barry Silk & Joe Haertel 2 40,41 04 240 HB- Howard & Bonnie Teitelbaum 2 34,42 05 220 BC- Bob Dorin, Chris Reeve, Nina & Sheila 4 43,46,48,? 06 140 RK- Rick & Kathy Schubert 2 39,43 07 133 MH- Mike Hubbard & Team <76424.1703@compuserve.COM> 2 40s 08 80 OF- The Old Folks at DG 2 various 09 65 MB- Mike Bixenman 1 43.5 10 38 DO- The Dutch Officials 3 various _____________________________________________________________________________ The following table gives the individual scoring breakdown. The Bee Gees are tied for third in the number of consecutive #1 hits (6). Both groups are tied for eighteenth in the number of top ten hits with 15.) In the event of something happening to me There is something that I'd like you all to see It's just a photograph of someone that I knew #03)The Bee Gees: "New York Mining Disaster 1941 (Have You Seen My Wife, Mr. Jones)" (1967) [14] (Ron and Sally Crandall noted that this was the Bee Gees' first song on the U.S. charts.) It was an attempt by their record label to keep them on the charts. An album titled "Popsicle" was released to cash in on the success of the single, but consisted solely of tracks previously released on other albums. This was true of many J&D album releases.) Remember on our first date You kissed me and you walked away You were only seventeen I never thought you'd act so mean #12)Ben E. King: "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)" (1962) [11] (Barry Silk and Joe Haertel pointed out that background vocals on this song are by the Cookies and Little Eva.) When I was a little baby My mama said, hey son Travel where you will and grow to be a man Sing what must be sung #13)The Kingston Trio: "Greenback Dollar" (1963) [21] (Ron & Sally Crandall noted that the airplay version of this song had the word "damn" removed. When I went back and listened to the single, it shows some unique editing: "Well, I don't give a about a greenback dollar....".) I just couldn't help myself Guess I was born with a curious mind I asked this man just what did he mean When he moaned, if he'd be so kind #14)Major Lance: "Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um" (1964) [5] (Howard and Bonnie Teitelbaum noted that this song was written by Curtis Mayfield.) You've been knockin' on my front door And I know just what you're lookin' for, but Even though you really look so fine And we could have a good time #15)Darlene Love: "Wait Till My Bobby Gets Home" (1963) [26] If you think you've found someone You'll love for evermore Then it's worth the price you'll have to pay #16)Mercy: "Love (Can Make You Happy)" (1969) [2] You're dynamite You got me uptight The way you sock it to me, girl You're out of sight #17)Gene Pitney: "She's A Heartbreaker" (1968) [16] Wake up in the morning and I fi-i-ind You're not in my room, you're in my mi-i-ind Suddenly the sun has lost its shine Baby, baby #18)Paul Revere and the Raiders: "I Had A Dream" (1967) [17] (This was one of their later, lesser known chart singles. A couple of years after this release, they shortened their name to simply "The Raiders.") Around the far turn in the straightaway I was blowin' off everything that got in my way #19)The Rip Chords: "Hey Little Cobra" (1964) [4] (The vocals on this song are actually done by Terry Melcher and Bruce Johnston. Terry Melcher was Doris Day's son, and produced records in the '60s for the Byrds and Paul Revere and the Raiders. Bruce Johnston later became a member of the Beach Boys.) Here she comes Just look at that style She's looking at you Giving you that smile #20)Del Shannon: "Little Town Flirt" (1963) [12] (Rick and Kathy Schubert pointed out that Del's real name was Charles Westover. The liner notes to his Rhino "Greatest Hits" CD note that his themes of teen angst and escape are echoed in the work of Bruce Springsteen. Before his suicide in 1990, he was considered to be an ideal candidate for the fourth member of the Traveling Wilburys, following the death of Roy Orbison.) That's where you'll find me Along with lovers, muggers, and thieves Ah, but they're cool people #21)The Standells: "Dirty Water" (1966) [11] (Rick and Kathy Schubert noted that lead singer Dick Dudd was an original member of the Mouseketeers.) One night a week is plenty enough It's a good thing for me they don't bottle that stuff #22)Swingin' Medallions: "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)" (1966) [17] Driftin' up and down the street Searchin' for the sounds of people Swingin' their feet #23)Norma Tanega: "Walkin' My Cat Named Dog" (1966) [22] Yes, I will do my homework Clean the yard every day Yes, I will wash those dishes I'll do anything you say #24)Chuck Willis: "Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes" (1958) [24] Where did your long hair go Where is the girl I used to know How could you lose that happy glow #25)Brian Wilson: "Caroline, No" (1966) [32] (Although this song was later included in the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" album, it first saw release as a Brian Wilson solo single. Twenty-two years later, Brian released his first solo album.) _____________________________________________________________________________ Here is the distribution of the songs from most recognized to least recognized.
