Good scores were also turned in by w/o Jamie Featuring Lynne, Team Ron Crandall, Team Dorin & Eddie & Lynda Blick. Anybody can make a difficult quiz--usually by using songs which didn't achieve high chart positions &/or by selecting more obscure lyrics, but read on... This quiz was all about chart positions. I'd been thinking about this idea for months. General rule 6. states that most songs in a quiz will be in the top 25 or so. My first thought was to show that just because a song achieved a top 10 ranking, that didn't necessarily make it easy to identify. So I designed a quiz with EVERY SONG a top 10 song, but then as I looked at it, I felt it was ridicu- lously difficult--so I relented & redesigned the quiz to only have songs which charted in the top 5!! Instead of my usual few smaller threads, this quiz had one big thread: every song was a top 5 song (no regional hits among these!). As always, I tried to give the most distinctive lyrics from the song (if I "knew" what they were), without, of course, including the title of the song itself :-) As with all of my quizzes to date, the lyrics for the non-tiebreaking songs (& in this case, the tie-breakers too) were obtained from the radio. Thanks to all who dared to enter. I'll be posting GOLQ38 shortly in an attempt to redeem myself :-) Jamie jil@donuts0.bellcore.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is a "+" after Score below for each tie-breaker answered correctly; a "-" indicates partial credit. Aside from that song, I expected the followed to have scored higher: "Marianne," "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'," "You Don't Know What You've Got (Until You Lose It)" & "You're The Reason I'm Living." I didn't think that "Ringo" would've scored as high as it did. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From WCBS-FM NY/NJ/CT listener-voted surveys of the top 500 songs of all time: Song 1991 1982 1979 1972 ------------------------------- ---- ---- ---- ---- But I Do #470 Ebb Tide #277 #464 Night #144 #166 Bo Diddley #53 Please Say You Want Me #184 #236 #324 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From WCBS-FM NY/NJ/CT listener-voted 1992 survey of the top 101 artists of all time: #1 Elvis Presley #11 Bobby Darin #14 Connie Francis #18 Jackie Wilson #27 Righteous Brothers #35 Paul Anka #55 Frank Sinatra #78 Brenda Lee Rankings among all artists for the period 1955-1990: Most charted singles: #1 Elvis Presley (149) #6 Frank Sinatra (67) #8 Stevie Wonder (61) #9 Pat Boone (60) T#11 Connie Francis (56) T#16 Jackie Wilson (54) #18 Paul Anka (53) T#19 Brenda Lee (52) Most Top-40 hits: Most Top-10 hits: #1 Elvis Presley (107) #1 Elvis Presley (38) #4 Stevie Wonder (46) #3 Stevie Wonder (28) #9 Pat Boone (38) #12 Pat Boone (18) #13 Connie Francis (35) T#16 Connie Francis (16) T#18 Paul Anka (33) Most #1 hits: Most Weeks at #1 position: #2 Elvis Presley (18) #1 Elvis Presley (80) #5 Stevie Wonder (10) #6 Stevie Wonder (25) T#14 Pat Boone (6) T#9 Pat Boone (21) Most Consecutive Top-10 hits: Most Consecutive #1 hits: #1 Elvis Presley (30) #1 Elvis Presley (10) #5 Pat Boone (14) T#10 Brenda Lee (10)
