Excellent scores were also turned in by the Barry Silk/Joe Haertel team and the Schuberts, both of whom scored in the 300s. Four teams scored in the 200s, which were very good scores on such a difficult quiz. All songs had at least one correct answer with the exception of #16. The GOLQ series turns 40 later today when Jamie Lubin posts the next quiz. Ron Crandall rmc@psuvm.psu.edu ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is a "+" after Score below for each tie-breaker answered correctly; a "-" indicates partial credit. (64) [1] [I quibbled and took off a point for omitting "& The All-Stars" from the artists' name. I don't have the 45, but Whitburn's Top Pop Singles book (the GOLQ Bible) says that's the full artists' name.] [Jamie Lubin noted that "Hello, Dolly!" was on the charts 22 weeks, and won the Grammy Awards song of the the year. Rick Schubert said that Louis's real name was Daniel Louis Armstrong.] In my mind, there's no sorrow Don't you know that it's so? There'll be no sad tomorrow Don't you know that it's so? #02) Beatles: "There's A Place" (64) [74] [One of the more obscure Beatles' songs. Howard T. noted that "There's A Place" was originally recorded in Feb. '63 and was released on on the Beatles first British LP, "Please Please Me" (it wasn't released as a single in the UK). He also noted that, in the States, it was the B-side of the "Twist and Shout" single on the obscure Tollie label. It was included in the States on the LP, "Introducing The Beatles", on Vee Jay.] [An early example of John Lennon's introspective writing.] They told me be sensible with your new love Don't be fooled thinking this is last you'll find But they've never stood in the dark with you, love When you take me in your arms And drive me slowly out of my mind #03) Carter, Mel: "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" (65) [8] [Barry Silk said that the original version was by Sonny Til & the Orioles in 1953.] Do you remember when Things were really hummin'? #04) Checker, Chubby: "Let's Twist Again" (61) [8] [Jamie and Rick noted that it was on the charts for a total of 23 weeks (on for 12 weeks, off for 10, then on again for 11 weeks). Jamie noted that Chubby (real name: Earnest Evans) worked in a car wash before becoming a singer, and was named after Fats Domino.] [#26 on R&B Charts] Once I thought that love was meant For anyone else but me Once I thought you'd never come my way-a-ay Now it only goes to show How wrong we all can be #05) Clark, Petula: "My Love" (65-66) [1] I've searched everywhere Just to find someone who cares They came down to end it all Just as I had given up #06) Crests: "The Angels Listened In" (59) [22] [#14 on R&B charts] Did you ever see starlights come rushin' from the sky Headin' for home in a certain someone's eyes? Ah ah ah #07) Essex: "A Walkin' Miracle" (63) [12] [The followup to "Easier Said Than Done", both songs were made while the group members were in active duty in the Marine Corps.] Well, I know she loves me so Well, I know Because my baby tells me so-wo-wo #08) Fiestas: "So Fine" (59) [11] [An attempt to redeem myself after trying to use this song in GOLQ 17, when I actually had the lyrics for "She's So Fine", by Flash Cadillac & The Continental Kids. Jamie noted that "So Fine" was written by Johnny Otis, and was originally done by the Sheiks in 1955.] Come on and a-talk to me Lovey-dovey, lovey one Come sit up on my knee #09) Harris, Thurston: "Little Bitty Pretty One" (57) [6] [Jamie and Howard noted that Harris was backed by the Sharps, who later became the Rivingtons. Howard also noted that Frankie Lymon (without the Teenagers) covered the song in 1960, and it became his last charted hit.] [Rick, Jamie, and Barry noted that it was written by Robert Byrd, better known as Bobby Day, who had a #57 hit with it with the Satellites in 1957. Rick noted the following additional cover versions: Clyde McPhatter hit #25 with in in 1962; and the Jackson 5 had a #13 hit with it in 1972.] [One respondent gave the Jackson 5 as the artist. Although that artist fits alphabetically, it is outside the 1955-69 time range of the quiz.] [#2 on R&B charts] Pain (pain) Come on in (come on in) Hello sorrow I see you back again #10) Lee, Brenda: "Coming On Strong" (66) [11] I'm gonna stay right here By your side Do my best to keep you satisfied Nothing in the world can drive me away #11) Lewis, Barbara: "Baby, I'm Yours" (65) [11] [News on Barbara Lewis courtesy of Jamie: From a January '93 news release : Barbara Lewis, a pop singer whose 10 hits in the 1960s included "Hello Stranger," is trying to make a comeback. Lewis, 48, quit show business following a bad marriage & accusations she was not receiving all the songwriting royalities she deserved. She had a string of odd jobs, ranging from making & selling leather crafts to breeding animals for pet stores to selling velvet paintings on street corners. Last week, she quit her job with a security company to devote herself full-time to her comeback dream. "Music is in my blood," she said.] [#5 on R&B charts] I remember all the times You told me that you were mine And I remember what it did to me #12) Lewis, Gary & The Playboys: "My Heart's Symphony" (66) [13] I'm givin' you one more chance For you to do right If you'll only straighten out We'll have a good life #13) Lynn, Barbara: "You'll Lose A Good Thing" (62) [8] [Jamie noted that both this song and #15 are on the soundtrack from the movie, "Hairspray".] [#1 on R&B Charts] It glows like a fire And it shi-i-i-ines like a star It's stronger than diamonds Worth more than gold #14) McPhatter, Clyde: "Treasure of Love" (56) [16] [Rick mentioned he will be honored on a U.S. postage stamp in June as part of the Rock And Roll/R&B series as a follow-up to the Elvis Stamp. His stamp will be included in a stamp booklet along with stamps for Elvis, Buddy Holly, Dinah Washington, Bill Haley, Otis Redding, and Ritchie Valens.] [#1 on R&B charts] The next thing I would do Is plan a celebration in the land Oh, what a happy day #15) March, Little Peggy: "I Wish I Were A Princess" (63) [32] [Alphabetically appears after McPhatter, because our rules specify that names beginning with Mc are alphabetized as if they began with Mac.] Well I went up on the mountain I looked down in the sea Saw the crowds and the fishes Doin' the fee-fi-fee #16) Nelson, Ricky: "My Bucket's Got a Hole In It" (58) [18] [Ricky's version of this song was actually a cover of a Sonny Burgess, a Rockabilly artist, song on Sun records. Ricky Nelson's version effectively killed any chance for Burgess to have a national hit, sharing a fate more often suffered by black artists at the hands of white "teen-idols".] [An old Okie favorite, this song was also released by Hank Williams in 1949.] The days we spend together we'll find The nights, the lights, were yours and mine It's true I'll always love you (always love you) #17) New Colony Six: "I Will Always Think About You" (68) [22] In all my conversations You're my inspiration In everything I do I do it for you #18) Pips, "Every Beat of My Heart" (61) [6] [Originally released on the Huntom label, the song got national distribution on the Fury and Vee-Jay labels. Although Huntom never actually signed the the group, that didn't stop their owner from selling the recording to Vee-Jay. Fury eventually sued Vee-Jay, and Vee-Jay had to give up rights to the group. Featuring 16 year-old Gladys Knight, the song was also released using the group name, Gladys Knight and the Pips (I accepted either name).] [Written by Johnny Otis, the song was originally done by the Royals (a.k.a., the Midnighters) in 1952.] And every time we have to be apart I hardly ever find you in my heart And when it comes to thinking of The point of losing all your love I never worry how my heart would break #19) Pitney, Gene: "Every Breath I Take" (61) [42] [Jamie noted that this was written by Carole King & Gerry Goffin, and co-produced by Phil Spector. He noted that Pitney had appeared in Carnegie Hall (NYC) on 2/26/93.] To kiss and know what love is They can cry all through the night Yes, you know, you know, how it feels to be lonely (sob) cry, (sob) cry, (sob) cry (sob) #20) Ronnie & The Hi-Lites: "I Wish That We Were Married" (62) [16] Told him I was gonna be a star But to do it, I would have to go far away But I'll come back some day And take him away #21) Rose Garden: "Next Plane To London" (67) [17] My heart is broken now It really doesn't matter, anyhow Now that you're gone away I only live from day to day #22) Shondell, Troy: "This Time" (61) [6] [Rick noted that this was originally released as by Troy Shundell.] [Tommy James was so impressed by Troy's guitar playing that he "borrowed" the name for his backup band.] She's with him He's turning down the lights And now he's holding her the way I used to do I can see she's closing her eyes and telling lies Exactly like she told me, too #23) Them: "Here Comes The Night" (65) [24] [The biggest U.S. hit for this Irish band. The lead singer, Van Morrison, went on to stardom as a solo act.] Heaven up above knows how much I love that fella' so Angels sing of the love that could be I hope that our love will grow and grow #24) Thomas, Carla: "Gee Whiz (Look At His Eyes)" (61) [10] [Jamie & Rick noted that Carla is the daughter of Rufus Thomas, whose "Walking The Dog" was used in GOLQ 29. Rick also noted that Bernadette Peters had a #31 hit with it in 1980.] [#5 on R&B charts] People try to put us d-down Just because we get around Things they do look awful c-c-c-cold Hope I die before I get old #25) Who, The: "My Generation" (66) [74] [The stuttering is supposed to be the result of a decidedly inarticulate British Mod's use of pills. "My Generation" was the closing song in the Who's early auto-destructive stage act. It is also the title of a Rock and Roll retrospective series on the VH-1 music TV station, hosted by Peter Noone, formerly of Herman's Hermits. Interestingly, the Who, on their first U.S. tour in 1967, opened for Herman's Hermits in one of the most unusual concert combinations in history!] Tie Breakers: When you're near, everything is so sweet When you're gone, I feel like I'm in need When you smile, I feel so ga-a-ay #TB1) El Dorados, "I'll Be Forever Loving You" (55) [A follow-up to "At My Front Door", Howard mentioned that it hit #8 on the R&B charts.] Well, I asked your sister, Mary And I asked your sister, Sue I even asked your mother What became of you #TB2) Magnificents: "Up On The Mountain" (56) [Written by group member Nathaniel Montague, a popular black disc jockey in Chicago, who called himself the "Magnificent Montague".] [A #9 R&B hit, according to Howard.] The trivia question: Who was the first artist to have a #1 U.S. pop single on a song released during 1955-69 that he/she wrote or co-wrote, and what was the name of the song? Give your answer in the normal artist/title format used for the lyrics questions. #TB3) Elvis Presley: "Heartbreak Hotel" [I outsmarted myself on this one. I had heard the following question on the radio: "Who was the first artist to both write and record a #1 song?" The answer they gave (actually played) was "Party Doll" from '57, by Buddy Knox (with the Rhythm Orchids). When I checked the song in one of my books, I was surprised that, although it's sometimes listed as written by Buddy Knox only, it was actually co-written by Jimmy Bowen, who was a member of the Rhythm Orchids. So I changed the question to allow for a co-writer, hoping that that was the real intent of the question on the radio, and that it wouldn't change the answer. WRONG!! Elvis was credited with being a co-writer on some of his early songs, including Heartbreak Hotel, which hit #1 on 4/21/56, according to Rick. Jamie's research indicated that Heartbreak Hotel was written by Mae Boren Axton (Hoyt's mother), Tommy Durden & Elvis. Because Jamie, Rick, and Howard all came to the same conclusion using a variety of reference books, I am more than happy to accept their answer. At least it generated some interesting discussion!] [Thanks much to Jamie, Rick, and Howard for their research on this.] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This chart ranks the songs/artists from most recognized to least recognized.
