Howard Teitelbaum ---------------cut here------------- RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #51 (GOLQ51) Congratulations to the Scooter Magruder & Joe Haertel team, who had a near-perfect entry with a score of 489++! They were also the only team to identify #TB1. Congratulations also goes out to Jamie Lubin who finished a very close second. Outstanding scores were also achieved by the Hallermans (first-time entrant) and the Schuberts. The Dashevsky team and Ron & Sally Crandall had excellent performances also. I had three themes/threads in GOLQ51. Special mention to Ron & Sally Crandall, the Hallermans, the Genasys Team, and Gavin Finney all of whom recognized my "T.A.M.I." thread derived from song #15. Joe Haertel was the only one to figure out the my exact thread derived from song #6. Jamie and the Hallermans did notice the Cameo-Parkway and Philadelphia artist relationships within this thread. The Hallermans, Gavin Finney, the Marc Dashevsky team, the Genasys Team, Jamie, and Ron & Sally Crandall all recognized my 'secret-agent'/James Bond movie themes. Any other themes that you may have identified were purely coincidental! Thanks to all who entered! Jamie comments that Anthony Newley & John Barry were among the writers.] Yeah, the bad guys know us and they leave us alone #03) Beach Boys: "I Get Around" (1964) [1] [Written and produced by Brian Wilson] [Rick Schubert adds that this song was used in a commercial for the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) featuring Walter Payton (not singing!) around 1980. Use of songs in commercials wasn't so common back then.] I got lumps in my throat when I saw her coming down the aisle I got the wiggles in my knees when she looked at me and sweetly smiled There she is again standing over by the record machine Looking like a model on the cover of a magazine She's too cute to be a minute over seventeen #04) Chuck Berry: "Little Queenie" (1959) [80] [Ron Crandall notes that this song appeared in the movie "Go Johnny Go" and that Berry is shown performing it in a coffee shop, with a backup band that includes Alan Freed playing the drummer!] Alone from night to night You'll find me Too weak to break this chain that binds me I need no shackles to remind me #05) James Brown & the Famous Flames: "Prisoner Of Love" (1963) [18] {6} [Twice a million seller - for Billy Eckstine in 1945 and Perry Como in 1946. This was Brown's first record to crack the top 20 on the Pop charts. IMHO this is one of Brown's best recordings.] 'Cause summertime is party time And everything's alright 'Cause everyone is feeling fine And every night is Saturday night #06) Chubby Checker: "Dancin' Party" (1962) [12] [This song ends with the following lyrics, referencing other artists in this quiz which constitute my "Cameo-Parkway" thread: "Have no fear 'cause the gang's all here At the twistin' party tonight ... Is Dee Dee here? (Yeah) Are the Orlons here? (Yeah) Are the Dreamlovers here? (Yeah)" Of course the gang's all here -- in this quiz!] [Jamie, the Hallermans, Joe & Scooter astutely observed that the four songs in this thread were artists that recorded on the Cameo-Parkway record label and that these artists were also all from Philadelphia] [Jamie also adds that the songs were also all written by Kal Mann (co-owner of Cameo records) & Dave Appell (whose group, the Applejacks, had a 1958 top-20 instrumental hit with Mexican Hat Rock)] [Rick and Jamie noticed that the line "And every night is Saturday night" is also from Bobby Rydell's "Wildwood Days" -- both of these songs were written by the same songwriting team of Mann and Appell, not surprisingly] [Chubby's real name is Ernest Evans] Everyone who is lonely I've got a place for you Where the music pla-a-ays Till way past two #07) Dave Clark Five: "At The Scene" (1966) [18] [Jamie says it was written by group members Dave Clark & Lenny Davidson] We'll have a big celebration Send invitations to all our friends and relations We'll have a ball Dancing and all #08) Dreamlovers: "When We Get Married" (1961) [10] [Rick Schubert notes that they got their name from Bobby Darin's song "Dream Lover" (GOLQ11)] [Ron Crandall, Pete Olden, and Rick note that The Dreamlovers performed as Chubby Checker's backup vocal group on "The Twist"] When we're out together Everyone knows the way we feel We both seem to glow with the glow of love And it's plain to see Our love is real #09) Four Seasons: "Candy Girl" (1963) [3] {13} The young and foolish laugh at love And slowly run away Confident and sure that fate Will bring another love their way #10) Four Tops: "Ask The Lonely" (1965) [24] {9} [Written by William Stevenson and Ivy Hunter] Once I was your sweetheart Now I'm just a friend Once you really loved me Now I just pretend #11) Connie Francis: "Frankie" (1959) [9] [Flip side of "Lipstick On Your Collar"] [Jamie comments co-writer (w/Howard Greenfield) Neil Sedaka came to Connie & said she'd probably like a song about Bobby Darin (whom she loved at the time), but she said it would be too obvious so to write it about teen idol Frankie Avalon instead] My remedy is older than the tale of Jack and Jill My prescription is the kind you'd love to have me fill #12) Marvin Gaye: "Take This Heart Of Mine" (1966) [44] {16} [co-written by Smokey Robinson] I stand out of sight And watch as the light From the sun shines through her hair From yonder she came I don't know her name #13) Gerry & the Pacemakers: "Girl On A Swing" (1966) [28] [Written by Bob Miranda, lead singer of the Happenings. The Happenings performed this song originally -- from their first LP entitled "The Happenings".] Johnny jumped up and he hit him 'Cause he still loves me that's why #14) Lesley Gore: "Judy's Turn To Cry" (1963) [5] {10} [Jamie comments that it was co-written by Beverly Ross who also wrote Lollipop, Dim, Dim The Lights, etc.] The representative from New York City Is Lesley Gore Now she sure looks pretty #15) Jan & Dean: "(Here They Come) From All Over The World" (1965) [56] [Ron Crandall comments that this was the theme song from the T.A.M.I. Show movie, which was hosted by Jan & Dean. The song was originally called "Music City", but was retitled after the lyrics were changed to fit the theme of the film. The T.A.M.I. Show film documented a 1965 all-star concert, which featured major artists of the day, including Chuck Berry, Lesley Gore, the Supremes, the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, and Gerry & the Pacemakers. Most of the T.A.M.I. Show performances are available in a video called "That Was Rock."] [In addition to the Lesley Gore line, this song contains the following lyrics, identifying artists and some songs that are scattered thoughtout this quiz, which constitutes my "T.A.M.I. thread": "Chuck Berry's checkin' in from St. Lou" "The Baby-Lovin' Supremes and Marvin Gaye" "The king of the blues, soulful James Brown, The Beach Boys' singing I Get Around" "The Rolling Stones from Liverpool have gotta be there, Gerry & the Pacemakers, they'll all gonna be there to sing for you"] [Gavin Finney and Jonathan Gowland both noted that this song contains a *major* error "...The Rolling Stones from Liverpool ...", which Gavin says is just laughable to UK listeners (The Stones are from the London area). And Joe Haertel says that Lesley Gore is actually from Tenafly, NJ not NYC!] [Joe also notes that the Miracles, the Barbarians, Darlene Love & the Blossoms also appeared on the T.A.M.I. Show, but not mentioned in the song.] He knows the meaning of success His needs are more so he gives less They call him the winner who takes all #16) Tom Jones: "Thunderball" (1965/66) [25] [Second song on quiz that is title song from a James Bond movie] [Jamie says it was co-written by John Barry] In a restless world like this is Love is ended before it's begun And too many moonlight kisses Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun #17) Lettermen: "When I Fall In Love" (1961) [7] [Rick Schubert and Tom O'Connor note that Doris Day had a #20 hit with this song in 1952, from the film "One Minute To Zero."] [Rick also adds that there's a great, but uncharted, version by the Skyliners on a 1959 LP.] Where do all the hippies meet? #18) Orlons: "South Street" (1963) [3] {4} [Referring to South Street in Philadelphia] [Jamie notes that Len Barry recommended the Orlons to their (the Dovells') Cameo-Parkway label] When I first saw you With your smile so tender My heart was captured My soul surrendered #19) Elvis Presley: "It's Now Or Never" (1960) [1] {7} [Rick Schubert comments that this was adapted from the 1899 Italian song "O Solo Mia."] You're shiftless and you're lazy Just like that hound dog Daisy I had when Grandma raised me #20) Martha Reeves & the Vandellas: "Honey Chile" (1967) [11] {5} Your mother who neglected you owes a million dollars tax And your father's still perfecting ways of making sealing wax #21) Rolling Stones: "19th Nervous Breakdown" (1966) [2] {32} [Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards] What's in dancin' Without romancin' So put that something extra on the line #22) Dee Dee Sharp: "Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)" (1962) [9] [Joe Haertel says that a re-recording of this song by Dee Dee was used in the soundtrack of the recent movie "Sister Act", since Alan Klein (who controls the Cameo-Parkway catalog) would not permit the original recording to be used] You drift through the years And life seems tame 'Til one dream appears And love is its name #23) Nancy Sinatra: "You Only Live Twice" (1967) [44] [Third (and final) song on quiz that is title song from a James Bond movie] [Jamie notes it was co-written by John Barry] I dig rock and roll music I can do the twine and the jerk I wear strictly continental suits And high collar shirts I've got a reputation of being gentle but bold #24) Edwin Starr: "Agent Double-O-Soul" (1965) [21] [Not exactly from a James Bond (Double-O-Seven) movie, but sort of fits my secret agent theme. Starr's first charted hit and co-written by him] [Joe Haertel notes that Edwin Starr wrote "Oh How Happy" for the Shades of Blue and he came into the Motown conglomerate when Ric-Tic records was purchased by Berry Gordy] But all you do is treat me bad Break my heart and leave me sad Tell me what did I do wrong To make you stay away so long #25) Supremes: "Baby Love" (1964) [1] {1} [The second of five consecutive Supreme's records to chart at #1!] [written by Holland, Dozier & Holland; produced by Holland & Dozier] TIE BREAKERS: We can share intrigue of all variety What a pair of secret agents we can be You'll be there beside me Yes, and secretly, secretly One kiss will make my heart beat faster And love will be our secret password #TB1) Smokey Robinson & the Miracles: "Come Spy With Me" (1967) [-] [Title song of movie with same name starring Troy Donahue. Joe Haertel observes that this was released on the flip side of "The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage". Fifth song fitting my 'secret agent' theme. Such a great title song for a flop of a movie!] I want to go, go, go I want to know, know, know Because I've read about it Heard about it Talked so very much about it That's where we belong #TB2) Sheppards: "Island of Love" (1959) [-] [Rick Schubert notes that the Sheppards are from Chicago. And Joe Haertel says that this was a local hit in Chicago before it was released nationally] [#71 on (Philadelphia) WOGL's Top 98 Doo-Wop songs of all time] ______________________________________________________________________________ This chart ranks the songs/artists from most recognized to least recognized.
