Some folks know about it Some don't Some will learn to shout it Some won't #09) Shirley Ellis: "The Nitty Gritty" (1963/64) [8] {8} Jamie comments that it was written for Shirley by her husband, Lincoln (Lincoln Bo Bincoln) Chase. Chase also wrote "Such A Night" which was recorded by the Drifters and Elvis Presley, observes Joe. Rick notes that it reached #19 in 1969 for Gladys Knight & The Pips. You see the rich has to cry The poor has to cry You'll have to cry And I-I gotta cry, oh yeah #10) Betty Everett: "There'll Come A Time" (1969) [26] {2} According to Joe, Betty Everett first recorded under the name "Rachel and the Revolvers" -- the song was "Revolution", a Loco-Motion (see song #16) clone, written and produced by Brian Wilson in 1962. Evening shadows make me blue When each weary day is through How I long to be with you #12) Connie Francis: "My Happiness" (1958/59) [2] {11} Rick mentioned it was with the David Rose Orchestra. It was written in 1933 by Peterson and Bergantine. The EJ's add that this song was a million seller for two different artists back in 1948: Jon & Sandra Steele; and The Pied Pipers. Ella Fitzgerald also had a hit with it in 1948; and an instrumental version reached #26 on the Billboard charts for a harmonica group, The Mulcays, in 1953. Joe notes it was the very first song recorded by Elvis Presley. He paid $4.00 to make a vanity record for his mother at the Sun studio in the summer of 1953 when he was 18 years old. The acetate of this recording surfaced in 1988 and was released in 1990. Do it nice and easy now And don't lose control A little bit of rhythm And a lot of soul #16) Little Eva: "The Loco-Motion" (1962) [1] {1} Several people noted it was written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin. Jamie adds it hit #2 in the UK. Joe notes that the background vocals were done by both Carole King and Little Eva. The Cookies did background vocals on later Little Eva songs. Little Eva with the Cookies backed up Ben E. King on "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)." Although the record company listed her age as 17 when she recorded "Loco-Motion", she was actually 19. For more insight, see Joe Haertel's extensive biographical essay on Little Eva in Goldmine Magazine #248 Jan 26, 1990. The EJ's add that both Carole and Eva were demo singers for Don Kirschner's Aldon Music Company in the early 60s. Eva was also Goffin and King's babysitter. Tom O'Connor and the EJ's note that it was covered by Grand Funk (1974) and Kylie Minogue (1988). Joe adds that an early photo of the four member Supremes (with Betty McGlown) appears in Berry Gordy's new autobiography, "To Be Loved." Together together That's how it must be To live without you Would only mean heartbreak for me #24) Dionne Warwick: "I Say A Little Prayer" (1967) [4] {8} As with most of Warwick's songs, it was written and produced by Burt Bacharach & Hal David. Rick says she was born Marie Dionne Warwick. This song was the B-side of "(Theme From) Valley Of The Dolls," which was #2 in 1968. Several people mentioned a cover by Aretha Franklin that reached #10 in 1968. She worked briefly as a substitute Shirelle in the early 1960's. They received the 1994 Rhythm & Blues Foundation Pioneer Award at which the three surviving original members sang together for the first time in 19 years. ______________________________________________________________________________ There was only one theme in this quiz: all the artists (well, almost all) the artists in this quiz are female. There are two minor exceptions: The Orlons (song #18) were a quartet with one male member; The Raindrops (song #19) were a duo with one male member. However, all lyrics in this quiz were sung by females, without exception. The theme was identified by: JP, JL, RS, RR, RC, DG, BG, PO. ______________________________________________________________________________ This chart ranks the songs/artists from most recognized to least recognized. The second number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that song (total points divided by number of entrants, to 1 decimal place). For comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale. Rank Avg.
