Iris Shapiro & the Gypsy's Caravan came second after a splendid performance. The team of Barry Silk, Scooter Magruder, Joe Haertel and Debra Duke was third, with an excellent score. This quiz proved to be much more difficult than I had thought, although there was only one song (#T1) that nobody was able to identify. I'm hoping that GOLQ77 will be easier. Barry Silk has already posted it, and it is due on 6/20/95. Thanks to everyone who entered! EJs & co. also said that Esther Phillips did a female version, "And I Love Him," which hit #54 in 1965. Rick added that an instrumental version by George Martin & His Orchestra (George Martin was the Beatles' producer) Bubbled Under at #105 in 1964 (entering the charts 1 week after the Beatles' version).] You needn't be lonely You shouldn't be blue I'll design a life of love for you And here's all you gotta do #02) Bobby Bland: "Call On Me" (1963) [22] {6} [T.P. Uschanov said that it was the B-side of his R&B chart topper "That's the Way Love Is".] ["Call on Me" was also the title song of his best selling album, which reached #11 on the pop album chart in 1963, staying six months on the chart.] Well, one night I happened to go to a dance Believing I'll find me some romance And this old lady I happened to see #03) Gary (U.S.) Bonds: "Dear Lady Twist" (1961/62) [9] {5} Have you heard the news You I'd hate to lose Come to my side Don't say goodbye #04) Roy Brown: "Let the Four Winds Blow" (1957) [29] {5} [Originally recorded by Dave Bartholomew, who also wrote the song. Fats Domino's version (with slightly changed lyrics) hit #15 in 1961.] [Roy Brown was one of the most popular and influential R&B singers of the late forties and early fifties. In 1948-1951 he recorded 15 R&B hits for the DeLuxe label. His career almost died, when he sued his manager and record company after he had found out that they had been double crossing him.] Get my hat, I'm checkin' out Cause you and your friends Really hurt my pride So unexpected you shot me down #05) Gene Chandler: "Nothing Can Stop Me" (1965) [18] {3} [The EJ's & co. stated that it was written by Curtis Mayfield.] He would always laugh and say Remember when we used to play #06) Cher: "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" (1966) [2] {-} [The EJ's & co. commented that it was Cher's first gold single as a solo. But while Sonny didn't sing on this one, he did produce the recording.] [Jamie mentioned that it was written & produced by Sonny Bono.] [Tom O'Connor echoed this and added that "the next quiz should include a song written by a Democrat, to abide by the equal time laws :-)".] Wherever you are That's where I long to be You captured my heart And I love it, can't you see #07) Dee Clark: "Nobody But You" (1958/59) [21] {3} [Jamie stated that it was written by Dee.] [Similar to the records Clyde McPhatter was making at the time, except that this is better than most of them!] Finance company man was here He took the TV and he took our chairs I bought a candle that burns real bright In case they decide they wanna turn out the lights #08) Dean & Jean: "Hey Jean, Hey Dean" (1964) [32] {-} [Dean & Jean were Welton Young and Brenda Lee Jones from Dayton, Ohio.] I told my friends That we would never part They laughed and said That you would break my heart #09) Dion & the Belmonts: "I Wonder Why" (1958) [18] {-} [Barry reported that it was Dion & the Belmonts' first release, and the first single for Laurie records. It was numbered 3013 for good luck.] [Jamie said that it was in the soundtrack of A Bronx Tale.] If it's a game I don't wanna play it And if it's goodbye Why can't you just say it #10) Patty Duke: "Don't Just Stand There" (1965) [8] {-} [This song reminds me of Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me", although Lesley is a stronger vocalist. Of course, Patty was (is?) better known as an actress.] I broke a heart Who's gentle and true I left a boy For someone like you #11) Betty Everett: "You're No Good" (1963) [51] {51} [She had made her first recordings in the late fifties for the small Cobra label, backed by Earl Hooker's band. Before she joined Vee Jay in 1963, she had a few local hits on One-der-ful, another small Chicago label.] [The EJ's & co. noted that You're No Good was her first top 100 song.] [According to Robert Pruter's book on Chicago soul, members of the vocal group Dells were present at the session. During the recording of the song some of them began to stomp their feet on the studio floor. Producer Calvin Carter liked the sound, and so it was used on the record!] [Several people mentioned that it was covered by the Swinging Blue Jeans in 1964 (their version was quite popular in Europe, but reached only #97 in the US). In 1975 Linda Ronstadt did a cover which went to number 1. The EJ's & co. said that Ronstadt's version was her first #1 song, and still remains her highest charting single ever.] [There was also a popular Finnish language cover version (of the Swinging Blue Jeans record) by a local band called Eddy & the Lightnings.] Now I'm on my own I walk alone A heart without a home #12) Fortunes: "Here It Comes Again" (1965) [27] {-} You tell me it's all right You don't mind a little pain You say you just want me to Take you for a drive #13) The Jimi Hendrix Experience: "Crosstown Traffic" (1968/69) [52] {-} [From his "Electric Ladyland" double album.] You can reach the top Or suddenly drop All your burdens I-I-I'll gladly bear #14) Damita Jo: "I'll Be There" (1961) [12] {15} [Answer song to Ben E. King's "Stand By Me". Damita was already a show business veteran when she recorded this - she had made first recordings in the early fifties, as a member Steve Gibsons Red Caps. She was even married to Gibson for a time. BTW, at least older editions of Whitburn's books have her birthday wrong - they claim that she was born in 1940, but I think that it should be 1930.] I'm free, free, free now I'm free from your spell And now that it's all over All I can do is wish you well #15) B.B. King: "The Thrill Is Gone" (1969/70) [15] {3} [Written by Roy Hawkins, whose original version hit #6 on the R&B chart in 1951.] You drove me, nearly drove me Out of my head While you never shed a tear #16) Julie London: "Cry Me a River" (1955/56) [9] {-} [Jamie noted that the song was used in the film The Girl Can't Help It.] [Written by Julie's childhood friend, Arthur Hamilton. He later went on to write full-time for Shalimar. Elvis recorded it with the understanding that Blackwell give Elvis half his writer's credit & half the royalties.] [The EJ's & co. commented that "with its B-side, "Hound Dog," this is Elvis' highest-charting record, a platinum single with over 5 million sold. Written by Otis Blackwell, and produced by Chet Atkins. The Jordanaires provide the background harmony, and Bill Black plays bass. In 1960, Bill Black's Combo did an instrumental version. It was also recorded by Barbara Lynn in 1963, and by Cheap Trick in 1988."] I can still recall When you told me I was all Everything you looked for in a man But I know that it's not true I've seen the way he looks at you #19) Paul Revere & the Raiders: "Him or Me - What's It Gonna Be?" Uschanov for further details!). This lazy novelty dance record was the only real hit he had during his most profilic period in the late fifties, when he waxed a large number of original and sometimes lunatic recordings for Detroit's tiny Fortune label. He also recorded a follow-up, which was called The Greasy Chicken!] _____________________________________________________________________________ This chart ranks the songs/artists from most recognized to least recognized.
