And Jyrki said: "I'm more familiar with Timmy Shaw's version, which was produced by the Mother of Detroit Soul, Johnnie Mae Matthews." From the letters that I write they think I'm fine But by day I make the cars By night I make the bars If only they could read between the lines #02) Bobby Bare: "Detroit City" (1963) [16] {-} The EJ's commented: Written by Danny Dill and Mel Tillis, and produced by Chet Atkins. In 1963, Sheb Wooley recorded a parody entitled "Detroit City No. 2" under the pseudonym Ben Colder. Also recorded by Tom Jones in 1967. Jamie adds it was the 1963 Grammy C&W Song Of The Year. Jyrki mentioned it was also recorded by Arthur Alexander and Solomon Burke, among others. Arlene (Delphi Trivia Club) said that Bobby acted in the film "A Distant Trumpet" in 1964 and had his own TV series in the mid-80s. The sun-tanned bodies and-a Waves and sunshine California girls and-a Beautiful coast line And warmed-up weather #03) Beach Boys: "Do It Again" (1968) [20] {-} Written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love of the Beach Boys. Jamie mentioned that it hit #1 in the UK. But what happens when the statue on the pedestal Comes tumbling to the ground I don't wanna be around To see the sorrow on her face When she thinks I let her down #05) Brooklyn Bridge featuring Johnny Maestro: "Blessed Is The Rain" (1969) [45] {-} Jamie commented: Maestro put together an 11-piece band that his managers complained was much too big to promote. It would be easier, their managers said, to sell the Brooklyn Bridge. So that's how they got their name. This was the "A" side of "Welcome Me Love" . Miami, Florida Atlanta, Georgia Raleigh, North Carolina Hey #06) James Brown & the Famous Flames: "Night Train" (1962) [35] {-} Howard commented: Two charted instrumental versions in '52. First was by the song's composer, saxophonist Jimmy Forrest (R&B #1 for 7 weeks). Later that year, a version by Buddy Morrow & His Orchestra hit #27 pop. Per Whitburn's "Pop Memories 1890-1954," tune is "based on the climactic riff of Duke Ellington's 'Happy Go Lucky Local'." Jyrki said that this is the title song of Finnish Radio's weekly soul music program. Scooter Magruder also uses it as his theme song for his "Sunday Night Train" radio show aired Sunday evenings on WBIG 100.3FM Washington, DC. I also noticed that this was used in the soundtrack of the recent movie "Apollo 13" as background music in the opening scene. Ron noticed that this was probably the first Whitburn-designated "Instrumental" song to be used in a GOLQ! I know I need a small vacation But it don't look like rain And if it snows that stretch down South Will never stand the strain #07) Glen Campbell: "Wichita Lineman" (1968) [3] {-} Rick, Howard, and Tom mentioned it was written by Jimmy Webb. Arlene comments: Glen was with The Beach Boys in 1965. Had his own TV show "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour," 1968-72. In films "True Grit," "Norwood," and "Strange Homecoming." Jamie notes that this was also recorded by Delbert McClinton who played harmonica on Bruce's "Hey! Baby." She goes down to Big Daddy when she Wants a mink She goes down to the plumber when she Wants to fix her sink #09) Chicago Loop: "(When She Needs Good Lovin') She Comes To Me" (1966) [37] {-} Written by Leiber and Stoller and originally recorded by the Coasters on the flip of their 1957 hit "Idol With The Golden Head." The Coasters' title was "(When She Needs Good Lovin) My Baby Comes To Me" -- Rick said that some pressings of the Chicago Loop's version were also labeled as "(When She Needs Good Lovin') My Baby Comes To Me." The Chicago Loop was, not surprisingly, from Chicago. They recorded this song on Bob Crewe's Dynovoice label. I'll find a pretty girl down there They know how to love you And treat you right They have a beach party Every night #10) Eugene Church: "Miami" (1959) [61] {14} Church teamed with Jesse Belvin and recorded as The Cliques. This was his second and final song to hit the pop charts. There's a young man that I know His age is twenty-one Comes from down in southern Colorado Just out of the service And he's lookin' for his fun #11) Judy Collins: "Someday Soon" (1969) [55] {-} Arlene commented: This was on a Judy Collins album called "Colors of the Day", which was a greatest hits album. She is the only artist to have a Top 100 hit with this song. Suzy Bogguss released a version last year. Other artists who have recorded it are: Ian & Sylvia, (and it was written by Sylvia Fricker of this Canadian folk duo), Chris LeDoux, and Moe Bandy. One triviot couple, Mark & Susie Treedr, recalled that some of the Collins lyrics are "He loves his damned ole rodeo as much as he loves me, Someday soon, goin with him someday soon." Lori Bailey said that most any Colorado resident would know this song since Judy Collins is a native of Colorado Springs. Just about a year ago I set out on the road Seeking my fame and fortune And looking for a pot of gold Things got bad and things got worse I guess you know the tune #12) Creedence Clearwater Revival: "Lodi" (1969) [52] {-} Howard notes that it was written and produced by group's lead singer, John Fogerty. B-side of #2 hit "Bad Moon Rising." Jyrki mentions that there's a memorable Finnish language version by Kari Peitsamo Revival. The EJ's mentioned it is from CCR's album "Green River." Also recorded by Al Wilson in 1969. I believe that the Lodi in this song refers to a city/town in California, since CCR was formed in El Cerrito, California. Arlene noted that Lodi is also a city in N. Italy and NE New Jersey. She's got a shape like Oooh, Rin Tin Tin And a face like My Uncle Ben When it comes to the twist or doin' the bop Everybody calls her the queen of the hop #13) Dovells: "Bristol Twistin' Annie" (1962) [27] {28} Written by Lewis and Styles. Bristol is a Pennsylvania town bordering Philadelphia. The Dovells hailed from Overbrook High School in Philly, with Len Barry as their lead singer. Like the sound you hear The name is in your ear But you can't forget from sundown to sunset It's all in the air You hear it everywhere No matter what you do It's gonna get a hold on you #14) Fifth Dimension: "California Soul" (1968) [25] {49} Jamie commented: written by Ashford & Simpson; Valerie Simpson's brother (Ray) was Village People's lead singer. I'm going to Chicago that's the last place my baby stayed I'm packing up my bags gonna leave this old town right away #15) Marvin Gaye: "Hitch Hike" (1963) [30] {12} According to Rick and Howard, backing vocals were performed by Martha & The Vandellas. Prettiest town I've ever seen Women there don't treat you mean #16) George Hamilton IV: "Abilene" (1963) [15] {-} Jamie notes that John D. Loudermilk was among the writers. The EJ's noted it was #1 on the country chart for 4 weeks and it was Hamilton's last Top 100 song on the pop charts. Arlene said that Hamilton moved to Nashville in 1959 and joined the "Grand Ole Opry." He had his own TV series on ABC in 1959, and in Canada in the late 1970s. Queen of the surfer girls She's got stars in her eyes and knots on her knees, now Her crazy grass shift really sways in the breeze, now #17) Jan & Dean: "Honolulu Lulu" (1963) [11] {-} Jamie said it was produced and arranged by Jan (Berry) who was also one of the writers. Arlene mentioned that Jan was critically injured in an auto accident on 4/19/66. Duo made a comeback in 1978, after their biographical film "Dead Man's Curve" aired on TV. Got a letter just this mornin' It was postmarked Omaha It was typed and neatly written Offerin' me a better job Better job at higher wages, expenses paid, a new car But I'm on TV here locally and I can't quit, I'm a star #18) Roger Miller: "Kansas City Star" (1965) [31] {-} Written by Roger Miller. Arlene noted that Miller had his own TV show in 1966. He was the songwriter of 1985's Tony award-winning Broadway musical "Big River." According to the EJ's, Jerry Kennedy produced this and all of Miller's hit singles. I tell you now my biggest moment Is when I stop to see That pretty blue-eyed angel Who waits right there for me I'm gonna tell her that I love her That I miss her every day #19) Nu Tornadoes: "Philadelphia U.S.A." (1958) [26] {-} "... / And my heart just wants to be in Philadelphia U.S.A." Tom notes that the group was from .... Philadelphia!! I saw a welcoming light And stopped to rest for the night And that is when I saw her As I pulled in outside of the small motel She was there #20) Gene Pitney: "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa" (1963) [17] {-} Written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach. On a cold and gray Chicago mornin' Another little baby child is born #21) Elvis Presley: "In The Ghetto" (1969) [3] {-} Howard and the EJ's noted it was written by Mac Davis. The EJ's added that it is from the album "Elvis in Memphis." A two-million seller. Jamie commented: song turned down by Bill Medley & then Sammy Davis, Jr. Jykri said his favorite version was recorded by Candi Staton in 1972. We're gonna take a little trip to Norfolk Just to see them build a great big ship We're gonna take a trip over to New Orleans Just to see the girls shake their hips #22) Ray & Bob: "Air Travel" (1962) [99] {-} Written by the performers: Ray Swayne and Bob Appleberry, from Los Angeles, CA. They're doing it in Chicago, oh And in Detroit too Way down in L.A. In New York it's the thing to do Catchin' on in Philly #23) Jackie Ross: "Jerk & Twine" (1965) [85] {85} This was her last charted pop hit. Jackie sang gospel on her parents' radio show at the age of three. Fee fee fi fi fo fo fum Looking mighty nice Here she comes Wearing her wig, hat, and shades to match #24) Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels: "Devil With The Blue Dress On & Good Golly Miss Molly" (1966) [4] {-} The EJ's noted: "Devil" was written by William Stevenson and Shorty Long/ "Molly" was written by John Marascalco and Bumps Blackwell. This recording was produced by Bob Crewe, and was the biggest hit for Ryder & The Wheels. Assisting them on this one are Mike Bloomfield on guitar and Barry Goldberg on organ. Fine performance, too, by regular Wheels' drummer Johnny Bee. "Devil" was an obscure single (it bubbled under the top 100 in 1964), done as slow blues, by Detroit soul singer Shorty Long/ "Molly" was one of Little Richard's biggest hits, in 1958. "Devil" was also recorded by Pratt & McClain in 1976/"Molly" was also recorded by The Swinging Blue Jeans in 1964. Howard commented: Group's second medley hit (first was "Jenny Take a Ride!"). "Devil with a Blue Dress On" was originally recorded by Shorty Long in 1964, and bubbled under at #125. "Good Golly, Miss Molly" was originally performed (and written) by Little Richard in '58 (pop #10). Tom added that this would now have to be called "Back in the a country formerly known as part of the USSR." Thought I wasn't ready For the tie that binds But I lost my heart to her When her eyes met mine Now I see it differently I've got to make her mine #25) Thomas, B.J.: "The Eyes Of A New York Woman" (1968) [28] {-} Written by Mark James, who also wrote "Hooked On A Feeling" for B.J. Tom said that B.J. just appeared at the Naperville, Illinois Labor Day "Last Fling" celebration and sounded great!! Naperville is about 25 miles west of Chicago. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Tie Breakers: Flew in from Miami Beach, B.O.A.C. Didn't get to bed last night On the way the paper bag was on my knee Man, I had a dreadful flight #T1) Beatles: "Back In The U.S.S.R" (1968) [-] {-} Written by Lennon and McCartney. Howard said it incorporates elements parodying both Chuck Berry's "Back in the U.S.A." and The Beach Boys' "California Girls." Jyrki mentioned that a Finnish band, the Leningrad Cowboys, has recorded this song together with the Red Army Choir. The EJ's mentioned it was from the Beatles' White Album. Rick noted it also hit the pop charts at #82 in 1969 for Chubby Checker. He met his woman at a baseball game The man said he played for the Milwaukee Braves Husky Bobalina was her name She asked for an autograph and made a date #T2) Eternals: "Babalu's Wedding Day" (1959) [-] {-} Howard, Ron, and Rick noted that this was also recorded by Billy & the Essentials (a Philadelphia group) in 1966. It was a regional hit for the Essentials in the Philly area and is the version I personally prefer. Ron commented: Several years ago, Goldmine magazine had a bonus question in a doo-wop contest that asked the entrants to give the name of the girlfriend in "Babalu's Wedding Day." The answers they received included over 300 different spellings of her name. To get an answer to the burning question (:-)) of the correct spelling, Goldmine asked Herman Velez of the Eternals, who said it should be spelled "Husky Bobalina." So you were close on the spelling! [Thanks Ron, I corrected the lyric above from "Usky" to "Husky"!] ______________________________________________________________________________ Major Theme: U.S.A. Place Names All songs have United States state, city, or town names in their title, lyrics, or artist. Only the Genasys Team, Lori & David Bailey, and the Really Rockin' In Boston teams identified this theme exactly! Most entrants left out the "U.S.A." part, although I'm sure that's what was assumed. (I didn't count U.S.S.R. in #T1 as part of the theme!) ______________________________________________________________________________ This chart ranks the songs/artists from most recognized to least recognized.
