A few teams reported that they had figured out the theme, but it didn't help them. Many teams did score higher than usual, however. Good work! We also had multiple 500 scores by three teams. This time, we have a tie for first place! Congratulations to the teams of JYRKI ILVA & PEKKA HALONEN and REALLY ROCKIN' IN BOSTON for each coming within one tie-breaker of perfect! Coincidentally, they were the only teams to identify the hardest song on the quiz: #T2. Also, congratulations to the team of JAMIE LUBIN, NORM KATUNA, MITCH MIRSKY for identifying all songs but the tie-breakers. Superior scores were turned in by both THE GYPSY'S CARAVAN and RICK & KATHY SCHUBERT. Special mention to the EJ'S & CO., RON & SALLY CRANDALL and MIKE WEAVER & CO. for their excellent performance. Hope everyone enjoyed the quiz. Thanks to everyone for participating! Jamie Lubin will be posting GOLQ91 shortly. Bill was born James William Anderson III in Columbia, South Carolina back in 1937. I've got everything you could think of But all I want is someone to love #02) Paul Anka: "Lonely Boy" (1959) [1] {6} The EJ's comment: Anka wrote and performed the song in the 1959 film "Girls' Town" in which he starred with Mamie Van Doren. The biggest hit of his career, a #1 song and a million seller. He's backed by Don Costa's orchestra. Please send a little girl for me to thrill A girl who wants my kisses and my arms A girl with all the charms of you #03) Frankie Avalon: "Venus" (1959) [1] {10} The EJ's comment: Written by Ed Marshall. Avalon's biggest hit, a million seller. Peter DeAngelis was the arranger/conductor. In 1976, 17 years after this song was #1, Avalon recorded a disco version which made it to #1 on the adult contemporary chart, but only to #46 on the Hot 100. Do my dreaming and my scheming Lie awake and pray Do my crying and my sighing Laugh at yesterday #04) Beach Boys: "In My Room" (1963) [23] {-} The EJ's comment: B-side of "Be True To Your School." Sagittarius also made the Hot 100with a recording of it in 1969. Jamie notes it was co-written by Brian Wilson. Jyrki & Pekka say that Robin Ward & the Rainbows recorded an answer song, "In His Car". T.P.Uschanov comments: I had to teach a substantial part of my senior high school choir how to pronounce "scheming" when we did this, in a medley with "I Get Around." You know it's up to you I think it's only fair Pride can hurt you too Apologize to her #05) Beatles: "She Loves You" (1964) [1] {-} The EJ's comment: Written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and produced by George Martin. First released in the U.S. in September 1963, it didn't hit the charts until January 1964. It was The Beatles second #1 hit ("I Want To Hold Your Hand" came first), and was included on "The Beatles' Second Album." The German version of the song, "Sie Liebt Dich (She Loves You)"---with The Beatles called Die Beatles on the label---squeaked into the Hot 100 for one week (#97) in June 1964. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah! Howard Teitelbaum adds: The song that established their stardom in the UK in '63, and also the song that introduced the oft-parodied "yeah yeah yeah" hook. Oh mama dear, a-look-a-here, look here There goes Mary Lou I see Tommy and Joe Oh-oh and Betty and Sue Whoa-oh-oh-oh there goes my boyfriend too #06) Claudine Clark: "Party Lights" (1962) [5] {3} The EJ's comment: Written and produced by Claudine Clark. This was originally considered the B-side of the record (the A-side was "Disappointed"), but radio stations---and their listeners---preferred "Party Lights," so the record company, Chancellor, shifted its promotion. This was Clark's only hit. Mike Weaver (Oldtunes) says he vaguely remembers a follow-up: "Walk Me Home From the Party" (also written by Claudine, but didnt chart - Barry). Gonna love you and make you love me You can't run away From this love I got, oh baby, hey baby #07) Delfonics: "Ready Or Not Here I Come (Can't Hide From Love)" (1968) [35] {14} Written by Thom Bell and William Hart, who also wrote "La-La Means I Love You." The Delfonics started out as the Orphonics of Overbrook High School in Philadelphia during 1964. They were heavily influenced by Little Anthony & the Imperials as well as Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. They began their performing career doing college homecomings and local high school talent shows. Michael Jackson, when he was with the Jackson 5, once remarked that the Delfonics were his favorite group. Through all levels You've been changing Getting a little bit better no doubt The doctor bit was so far out Looking through all kinds of windows I can see you had your fun #08) Donovan: "Epistle To Dippy" (1967) [19] {-} Jamie and the EJ's mention it was written by Donovan Leitch and produced by Mickie Most. I miss your love I had known I miss your kiss that was my very very own Empty silence surrounding me Lonely walls, they stare at me #09) Four Tops: "7 Rooms Of Gloom" (1967) [14] {10} Written by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland. There's always one who loves more than the other But I don't mind I don't mind I'm willing to pay the price Have your love at any sacrifice #10) Marvin Gaye: "Little Darling, I Need You" (1966) [47] {10} Written by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland. Both Wendy Vickers and the Delphi Trivia Club say the Doobie Brothers covered it (in 1977). Over the ocean Perpetual motion Traveling around No rest, singing and playing Night out and dating Doing the rounds What a great life it must be #11) Herman's Hermits: "East West" (1966) [27] {-} Herman's Hermits formed in Manchester, England in 1964. Their name was derived from cartoon character Sherman of TV's "The Bullwinkle Show." Half of a loaf isn't better than one When I'm starvin' for you (when I'm starvin' for you) Don't hold me tight if every night we stop at two #13) Jay & the Techniques: "Keep The Ball Rolling" (1967) [14] {-} Written by Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell. They also teamed to write many other songs including "Can't Get Enough Of You, Baby" (see song #21); "Opus 17 (Don't Worry 'Bout Me)", "Working My Way Back To You", "Betrayed", and "Let's Hang On" for the Four Seasons; "A Lover's Concerto" for the Toys; "Society Girl" and "Dusty" for the Rag Dolls. Jay & the Techniques, from Allentown, PA, featured Jay Proctor as lead singer. For a write-up of Jay & the Techniques and an interview with Jay, see the April 1996 issue of DISCoveries magazine (pages 32-34). The EJ's note it was also recorded by Al Hirt in 1968, Hirt's last record to make the Hot 100 (it was #100 for one week). I've seen your face And I've touched your hair I've dreamed you a thousand times Oh I'd know you anywhere #14) Rod Lauren: "If I Had A Girl" (1959) [31] {-} Written by Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett. Produced by Dick Peirce. Rod was groomed by RCA in 1960 to be a hot new teen idol. In retrospect, it looks like RCA's attempt failed, as this was his only charted hit. Each night as I sleep Into my heart you creep I wake up feelin' sorry I met you Hopin' soon that I'll forget you When I look in the mirror to comb my hair I see your face just a-smilin' there #15) Martha & the Vandellas: "Nowhere To Run" (1965) [8] {5} Produced by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier; written by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland. Martha Reeves, lead singer, got her early background in music from her father's Methodist Church, where she was schooled in the sounds of the Soul Stirrers, the Five Blind Boys, and Clara Ward. "Nowhere to Run" was released just as they took off for England as part of Motown's first European package tour alongside the Temptations, the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, the Miracles, and Stevie Wonder. The EJ's say it features notable performances by James Jamerson on bass and Benny Benjamin on drums. Look at you Oh look at you So warm, so sweet, so shy Look at me Oh look at me I can't believe that I'm such a lucky guy #16) Johnny Mathis: "Gina" (1962) [6] {-} Written by P.Vance and L.Carr. Johnny Mathis was born in San Francisco in 1935. He studied opera from age 13. He attended San Francisco State College on a track scholarship and was invited to Olympic try-outs, but chose a singing career instead. Shouldn't there be someone In this whole wide world Who would be so happy Just to be my girl If I held her She'd know I never never never let her go #17) Garnet Mimms: "One Girl" (1964) [67] {NC} Written by Norman Meade (a pseudonym for Jerry Ragovoy) and Bert Russell (a pseudonym for Bert Berns) who teamed to write many hits for Mimms including "Cry Baby", "A Quiet Place", and "Look Away." Berns also wrote "A Little Bit Of Soap" for the Jarmels under the pseudonym Bert Russell. Baby come closer, closer to me And listen, listen so carefully Remember all the nights that I told you I loved you It wasn't true I used you and you were just someone new To fill this lonely heart of mine I was lying all the time #18) Roy Orbison: "Falling" (1963) [22] {-} Jamie notes it was written by Roy. Buck, the Platter's manager and former law student at University of Illinois, co-wrote many of their hits including "Only You (And You Alone)", "The Great Pretender", "Enchanted", and "Twilight Time". One of the most successful vocal groups of the 1950's, the Platters formed in Los Angeles in 1953 and featured Tony Williams on lead. Well, excuse me if you see me crying like a baby Since she rejected me there's nothing left to save me #20) Elvis Presley: "One Broken Heart For Sale" (1963) [11] {21} Jamie notes that this was co-written by Otis Blackwell. The Delphi Trivia Club note that it was from Elvis' movie "It Happened At The World's Fair." My heart cries out: "More baby!" Feels so nice Want your arms to wrap around me twice #21) ? (Question Mark) & the Mysterians: "Can't Get Enough Of You, Baby" (1967) [56] {-} Written by Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell. Also performed by the Toys. You just need help, girl Well you think you'd better find yourself a little piece of paradise Well it ain't happened yet So girl you better think twice #22) Paul Revere & the Raiders featuring Mark Lindsey: "Kicks" (1966) [4] {-} Written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. The EJ's say it was the first major hit with an anti-drug message, and the group's first Top 10 song. Jimmy called me on the phone And I was gone Not at home 'Cause I was out parked all alone #23) Sue Thompson: "Norman" (1961) [3] {-} Howard and EJ's note it was written by John D. Loudermilk. The EJ's add that it was Thompson's biggest hit. If it's me you want to love you I'll be more than glad to love you Hold you 'til your life is done But darling, if I'm not the one #24) Bobby Vee: "Run To Him" (1961) [2] {-} Jamie notes it was co-written by Gerry Goffin. The EJ's add it was produced by Snuff Garrett and Vee is backed by The Johnny Mann Singers. Mike Weaver comments: IMHO Mr. Vee is one of the few oldies performers who sounds as good live today as he did 30+ years ago. Bobby always was a particular favorite of mine. But what good is love To a heart that can't be free So I'll go on living my life just the same #25) Barry Young: "One Has My Name (The Other Has My Heart)" (1965) [13] {-} Written by Eddie Dean, Dearest Dean, and Hal Blair. It was a country hit for Jimmy Wakely in 1948. Jamie notes (and I concur) that Young is a Dean Martin sound-alike. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TIE-BREAKERS: You You came just one dream ago And now I know That I will love you Oh I, knew when you first said hello That's how I know That I will love you And I yi yi yi yi waited for your kiss Waited for the bliss #T1) Applejacks: "Like Dreamers Do" (1964) [-] {-} Howard comments: An early Lennon/McCartney composition; only known version by The Beatles, recorded at their failed audition for Decca Records on 1 Jan 1962, was finally released legitimately on Volume 1 of Anthology. The Applejacks were given the song in '64. The Dutch Officials say it was performed by Billy J Kramer & the Dakotas. [I gave full credit for an answer of Beatles as artist, even though they do not sing the "yi yi yi yi" in the 8th line :-) ] Hold me oh so close (oh so close) And look into my eyes (to my eyes) Help me to realize (realize) That you really love me too (that you really love me too) #T2) George Goodman & His Headliners: "Let Me Love You" (1965) [-] {-} A great regional doo-wop style hit in and around Pennsylvania during the mid-1960s which, unfortunely, never charted nationally. Written by Genne Salo. Produced by George Goodman. Features Rodney Williams on lead, Melvin Peters, top tenor and George singing baritone. It was released five times and appeared on three different labels (Val, Warner Brothers, and A&M). George was from the Hill District of Pittsburgh, PA and had a successful career in record promotion and distribution before passing away in the late 1960's. _______________________________________________________________________________ Theme: * The first letter of all the titles spell out: "ELVIS PRESLEY KING OF ROCK N ROLL" IDed by: JL, RR, HT, TA, PO, OT, SS, DG, HT, GT, DC, RS, RC, IS Partially IDed by: EH, TP Of course, you may or may not agree with the message :-) _______________________________________________________________________________ This chart ranks the songs/artists from most recognized to least recognized. I guess if I had to mention any surprises, I'd have expected "Run To Him", "Remember When", and "Like Dreamers Do" to do a little better. I'm sure that "8 X 10" and "Ready Or Not, Here I Come" did as well as they did because of good guessing based on the theme. In retrospect, about the only major surprise for me, is that one team actually failed to identify "She Loves You"! Yeah, yeah, yeah... :-) _______________________________________________________________________________ Barry Silk barrys@cais.com
