Date: Wed, 13 Nov 1996 12:50:33 GMT RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #100 (GOLQ100) Hope YOU all had fun on this quiz. Given the theme, I was hoping that GOLQ100 would be lots of fun and relatively easy compared to some other recent quizzes. I'm very pleased with the number of high scores this time. I'm especially happy to report that a new GOLQ record has been set by the number of 500 scores achieved on a single quiz: seven! There were 14 scores of 400 or more! Congratulations to JAMIE LUBIN, NORM KATUNA & STEVE PROPES for finishing in first place and missing a perfect score by only a partial tie-breaker! Congratulations to the three teams which tied for second place and missed a perfect score by only one tie-breaker: MICHAEL FLINT; MIKE WEAVER, BEN BAGDONAS, GEORGE MCCLELLAN; REALLY ROCKIN' IN BOSTON. Hard to believe, but three teams tied for fifth place by achieving perfect scores on the regular part of the quiz: LEN ELLIS AND PAUL ELLIS (not related); RICK & KATHY SCHUBERT (related); PEKKA HALONEN, JYKI ILVA. Superior performances were also turned in by MICHAEL GESSNER AND DAN DINARDO; THE GYPSY'S CARAVAN & SCOTT; THE GENASYS TEAM; RON & SALLY CRANDALL; SCOOTER MAGRUDER & JOE HAERTEL; ANTONIO TORRALBA'S TEAM; and ROGER NEUSTADTER! Thanks everyone so much for playing and making the GOLQ oldies series a success over the past six years. Rick Schubert has posted GOLQ101 to start the second century of GOLQs as he did with the first century of GOLQs. I'll bet he had no idea that these quizzes would last for at least six years (so far). Rick claimed he "ran out of material" after GOLQ04! ____________________________________________________________________________ There is a "+" after Score below for each tie-breaker answered correctly; a "-" indicates partial credit. An "x" indicates a totally incorrect guess. # on Pos Score ID Name & E-mail address team age(s) ---|-----|--|------------------------------------------------------|--|-------- 1 500+- JL Jamie Lubin, Norm Katuna & Steve Propes 3 50-54 jil@dunkin4.bellcore.com T2 500+. Vocalist Lynn Nixon joined the group a short time later. In December 1957 they entered a talent contest at Malvern High and were spotted by Lou Fargo, a local estate agent who's daughter attended the same school. Fargo dabbled in the record business in addition to his real estate activities, running a fledgling record label called Fargo from Manhattan. "You" was recorded in the Brill Building and released on the Fargo label. "You" was played numerous times on "American Bandstand." You send me into outer space You're just the livin' end And every time that we embrace I know you're more than just a friend #02) Frankie Avalon: "You Excite Me" (1958) [49] {-} Written by Marcucci and DeAngelis who teamed to write several other Avalon songs including "Why", "I'll Wait For You" and "Singing On A Rainbow". Lips like strawberry wine #03) Johnny Burnette: "You're Sixteen" (1960) [8] {-} Anthony Torralba noted: Song originally recorded as "You're 13". A #1 hit for Ringo Starr in 1974. Composed by Richard and Robert Sherman, who composed a lot of songs for Disney films ("Mary Poppins", "Jungle book"). Johnny is remembered for his Coral rockabilly sides, with brother Dorsey Burnette and influential electric guitar player Paul Burlison ("Rock'a Billy Boogie", "Sweet love on my mind", and "The Train Kept A-Rollin'"). He also composed for Ricky Nelson ("Waitin' in School", "Believe what you say", ...). Died tragically in a boat accident in 1964. We were meant for each other Sure as the heavens above We were meant for each other To have, hold and love #04) Mel Carter: "You You You" (1966) [49] {-} Written by Robert Mellin and Lotar Olias. Produced and arranged by Nick DeCaro. The EJ's say this is a remake of the 1953 hit by The Ames Brothers, which was a #1 song, a million-seller, and the biggest pop hit of the Brothers' career. Anthony Torralba added: Cincinnati born ballad singer, who specialized in updating oldies. Recorded once on Sam Cooke's own Derby label. Top hit: "Hold me, thrill me, kiss me" in 1965 (original by Karen Chandler in 1953). Two and two is four One and one is two Everyone's got their eyes on you Look at those measurements, man alive 34-24-35 #05) Dee Clark: "You're Looking Good" (1960) [43] {-} Delecta Clark was born in 1938 in Blytheville, Arkansas. He died of a heart attack in 1990. I, I feel so free Everyone now looks at me Walks my baby down the street My heart skips a beat Well now I know I really love you so Everyone in this world should know That I love you You love me That's the way it should always be #06) Cleftones: "You Baby You" (1956) [78] {-} Since this quiz was in effect during the American elections, it seems appropriate to point out that the Cleftones got their start singing campaign slogans for a school election at Jamaica High School in Jamaica, NY. The group started out as a blending of two school groups: the Clefs, with Herbie Cox, Berman Patterson, and Warren Corbin; and Silvertones members Charlie James and William McClain. Released the third week of December, 1955, "You Baby You" had the distinction of being the first release on George Goldner's "Gee" label. The news is out All over town That you've been se-een A-runnin' 'round I know that I Should leave but then I just can't go-oo #07) Fats Domino: "You Win Again" (1962) [22] {-} Several people noted it written & originally recorded in 1952 by Hank Williams. The EJ's added: it was #1 for 14 weeks on the Country Chart, but didn't make the Pop Chart. Other versions did make the Pop Chart, however: Tommy Edwards (1952), the Paulette Sisters (1955), and Jerry Lee Lewis (1958; the B-side of "Great Balls Of Fire"). When you're on South Street And the band is really bootin' You hear the hippy with the back beat And you see the gang a-groovin' #08) Dovells: "You Can't Sit Down" (1963) [3] {10} The Dovells started out in 1959 as the Brooktones, derived from their school, Overbrook High School in Philadelphia. Len Borisoff (aka Len Barry) was the lead singer. Anthony Torralba noted: One of those instrumental songs with lyrics. Originally recorded by the Philip Upchurch Combo (who recently played in Barcelona) in 1961 (and had the UK hit ... in 1966). Lyric by Karl Mann, founder of the Dovells' Cameo-Parkway Records in 1956, and Bernie Lowe. Other recordings: Boots Randolph, Len Barry, The Kingsmen, Brian Poole, the Shangri-Las (live recording featured in their first album) and Hound Dog Taylor (without lyrics). See the marketplace in old Algiers Send me photographs and souvenirs #09) Duprees: "You Belong To Me" (1962) [7] {-} The EJ's comment: The first and biggest hit for the quintet from Jersey City, their only Top 10 record. It was also the biggest-selling hit for Jo Stafford, whose version was #1 for 12 weeks in 1952 and sold close to two million copies. Also a hit in 1952 for both Patti Page and Dean Martin. Anthony Torralba added: Sung by Bob Dylan in the "Natural Born Killers" soundtrack. The Duprees were fronted by Joey Vann (Joe Canzano), came from Jersey city and were originally known as The Parisians. But now since you're gone I'm so sad and alone Remembering the love That we had for our own #10) Fireflies: "You Were Mine" (1959) [21] {-} Written by Paul Giacalone. Another lover You discover Our love's gone and I don't know why It's just as well though At last I do know All said was just a lie #11) Impressions: "You've Been Cheatin'" (1965) [33] {12} Written by Curtis Mayfield who wrote most of the Impressions' songs. You talk about people that you've never seen You talk about people you can make me scream #12) Joe Jones: "You Talk Too Much" (1960) [3] {9} Written by Reginald Hall and Joe Jones. Rick noted it also charted for Frankie Ford in 1960 reaching #87. The EJ's comment: The first and biggest hit for the singer from New Orleans, his only record to break into the Top 40. Anthony T. added: He had the hit when the record was released for the third time. He later produced Alvin Robinson and the Dixie Cups. A hit in Catalonia by Nuria Feliu as "Tu parles molt". Well I wish, I wish you success And loads, loads of happiness But baby, I've gotta confess I'll be lonely If you ever, ah if you ever need a friend I'll be yours until the end #13) Brenda Lee: "You Can Depend On Me" (1961) [6] {25} Written by Charles Carpenter, Louis Dunlap and Earl Hines. Rick noted that it reached #4 in 1932 for Louis Armstrong. The EJ's added: A hit for Art Jarrett & His Orchestra also recorded it in 1941. You know I love you Do anything for you Just don't mistreat me And I'll be good to you #14) Barbara Lynn: "You'll Lose A Good Thing" (1962) [8] {1} Written by Barbara Lynn. Born Barbara Lynn Ozen in Beaumont, Texas in 1942, she was discovered by a local blues artist and deejay named Clarence Garlow in 1960. In addition to her vocals and songwriting skills, Barbara Lynn was a left-handed guitar player. This song was featured in the soundtrack of "Hairspray". If you should ever go away My eyes would fill with tears And the heartaches I would feel Would last a thousand years #15) Rick Nelson: "You Are The Only One" (1960) [25] {-} Written by Baker Knight. He also wrote other songs for Rick Nelson including "Lonesome Town" and "Never Be Anyone Else But You". I never had much going But at least I had you How can you walk out knowing I ain't got nothing else if you do, baby #16) Righteous Brothers: "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration" (1966) [1] {13} Written by the prolific songwriting team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil who also wrote "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", "Kicks", "Uptown", "Who Put The Bomp", "We Got To Get Out Of This Place", "On Broadway", "Blame It On The Bossa Nova" among many others. The EJ's added: "Soul and Inspiration" was the last Righteous Brothers record to hit #1; it was also a million-seller. Donny & Marie charted with their version of the song in 1977. You said that you want me Oh what can I do? But just keep on loving you #17) Shields: "You Cheated" (1958) [12] {11} The Slades, who also charted with the original version is an acceptable answer since it also fits alphabetically. Rick Schubert noted: This song is one of the few songs for which a black artist covered (in the original definition of the term) a song recorded by a white artist. The Slades first recorded it, and their version first charted on 8/4/58. The Shields were formed solely to cover this song. The Shields' version first charted 3 weeks later and was by far more popular. According to Whitburn, Frankie Ervin was lead for the Shields, Jesse Belvin sang falsetto, and Johnny "Guitar" Watson was also a member. A similar note was submitted by Ed Toutant: The Slades also charted with this song. The Slades were from Austin, TX, and their version hit the charts on 8/4/58, where it reached #42. Soon after a producer from L.A. heard the song and assemble a group of singers (including Jesse Belvin) to put out a competing version which quickly hit the charts on 8/25/58 and shot up to #12. Don't you see that now you've gone And I'm left here on my own That I have to follow you And beg you to come home #18) Dusty Springfield: "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" (1966) [4] {-} Anthony T. noted: Version of the Italian song "Io Che Non Vivo", by Pino Donaggio and Vito Pallavicini. English lyrics by Simon Napier-Bell (manager of the Yardbirds and Wham!, who wrote his autobiography under the title of this song) and Vicki Wickham (UK TV producer who later managed Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles, Nona Hendryx -former Bluebelle- and, in recent years, Dusty Springfield!). Other hits: Elvis Presley and Guys and Dolls (this in UK only). Other recordings: Cher, The Miracles, Vikki Carr, Jim Nabors, The Four Sonics, Helen Reddy, Arthur Prysock, Tanya Tucker, Mel Carter, Eddie Fisher. You're part of every thought I think each day Your name is used in every phrase my lips say Every dream I dream is about you Honey I couldn't live without you Baby (baby) baby (baby) baby #19) Temptations: "You're My Everything" (1967) [6] {3} Anthony T. noted: Written by Norman Whitfield, Roger Penzabene and Cornelius Grant (Temptations' tour guitarist and musical director), and produced by Norman. Lead vocals by David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks. And who believes that my wildest dreams And my craziest schemes will come true? #20) Turtles: "You Baby" (1966) [20] {-} T.P.Uschanov noted it was written by P F Sloan and Steve Barri of The Fantastic Baggys, writers of several minor and not-so-minor rock classics, e.g. "Eve of Destruction". Keep me in your heart Never let us part Ooh never leave me Please don't deceive me I want you only You must believe me #21) Vogues: "You're The One" (1965) [4] {-} The Vogues, originally formed as the Val-Aires in the late 1950's, were a quartet from Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania. Members were Bill Burkette (lead), Charles Blasko, Hugh Geyer, and Don Miller. They recorded "You're The One", a Petula Clark song, on Blue Star Records. When its activity spread, Co and Ce Records of Pittsburgh picked up the master and pushed it to the number four position. It was the Vogues first chart record. I've been hearing rumors about How you play around Though I don't believe what I hear Still it gets me down If you should ever should say goodbye It would be so awful The angels would cry #22) Dionne Warwick: "You'll Never Get To Heaven (If You Break My Heart)" (1964) [34] {NC} The EJ's note that it was written and produced by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. From the album "Make Way For Dionne Warwick." The Delphi Trivia Club mentioned it was also recorded by the Stylistics in 1973 and charted at #23. For I never knew The art of making love Though my heart ached with love for you Afraid and shy I let my chance go by The chance you might have loved me too #23) Lenny Welch: "You Don't Know Me" (1960) [45] {28} Many people noted it was also recorded by: Jerry Vale (1956) [#14], Ray Charles (1962) [#2], and Elvis Presley (1967) [#44]. Anthony T. noted: Original by Eddy Arnold (once managed by Colonel Tom Parker, who later managed Elvis Presley). Arnold only had one pop Top 20 record ("Make the world go away") but 136 chart records in the country lists between 1945 and 1983. The EJ's add: Welch's first record to make the Hot 100. Ray Charles' version with "I Can't Stop Loving You," was one of the most popular tracks from his groundbreaking R&B-meets-C&W album, "Modern Sounds In Country and Western Music." Jamie mentioned this was co-written by Eddy Arnold and used in soundtrack of "Groundhog Day". But I found out beyond a doubt One day, boy, you were a playboy Who would go away and leave me blue #24) Mary Wells: "You Beat Me To The Punch" (1962) [9] {1} The EJ's note this was the first Top 10 hit for the Detroit teenager, and the first Top 10 song for anyone on the Motown label. Anthony T. noted: Written by Smokey Robinson and Ronald White, and produced by Smokey. Typical "dual meaning" Smokey lyric. Mike Gessner mentioned that it was backed up by the Love Notes. Whatcha tryin' to do to my heart? Whatcha tryin' to do to my heart? You go around telling lies You fool around with the other guys Whatcha tryin' to do to my heart? #25) Young Rascals: "You Better Run" (1966) [20] {-} Jamie notes it was written by group members Felix Cavaliere & Eddie Brigati. Tie-Breakers: She'll always be my baby and she'll always ride with me When we're heading down the highway it's so very plain to see I know my little Honda's always running real sweet Cause my baby's right behind me on my buddy seat #T1) Hondells: "You Meet The Nicest People On A Honda" (1965) [-] {-} This was the flip side of the Hondells' "Sea Cruise" which charted at position #131 on the pop charts. Antonio Torralba informed me of how he managed to identify this song. The explanation is far too voluminous to include here, but essentially he guessed (correctly) that the artist might be the Hondells. He surfed the net to find if there were any Hondells songs that began with "You". During his search, he managed to come across and contact Chuck Girard (cgirard@village.ios.com), former member of the Hondells, who identified the song from the lyrics. Girard did not, however, sing on this song! Antonio found out that Chuck Girard has a home page on the web: http://village.ios.com/~cgirard. You look as if you're softer than a rosebud And you're warmer than the sun that makes it grow Right now you're walking my way I'm gonna stop you and say I don't mean to be so bold But from the things that I've been told #T2) Smokey Robinson & the Miracles: "You Must Be Love" (1967) [-] {-} Co-written and produced by Smokey Robinson. It was the "B" side of "I Second That Emotion". I have found many flip sides of Motown records that are equal to or better than the plug side. This has to be one of them. Thanks to Dan DiNardo for catching and correcting my error on the third line in the quiz lyrics. Mike Gessner added that it is from the "Make It Happen" LP. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THEME The theme this time I hope was more or less obvious: all songs begin with the word "YOU" and derivatives: "YOU'LL" "YOU'RE" "YOU'VE".
