A solo performance, too! Great work, Michael. Congratulations is also in order for REALLY ROCKIN' IN BOSTON, who came in a close second with only one missed regular song. Also TEAM JAMIE had their usual high score, good enough for third place. Excellent scores were also achieved by THE GYPSY'S CARAVAN, TEAM ASIA, THE DELPHI TRIVIA CLUB and the MIKE WEAVER, BEN BAGDONAS, GEORGE McCLELLAN team. Although several people observed that this was a difficult quiz, an equal number of people expressed their appreciation for the challenge. All songs, except for #T1, were identified by at least three teams. [Len says "Thanks for letting me run a quiz and hope that I get another opportunity."] Jyrki Ilva & Pekka Halonen will be running GOLQ107. Thanks to all who entered! Y. Harburg. The first and biggest hit for the Bronx quartet. Backed by Irv Spice's orchestra. Of course, this song was originally sung by Judy Garland in the 1939 film "The Wizard Of Oz." In that year, four artists had Top 10 versions of the song: Glenn Miller & His Orchestra (a #1 hit), Bob Crosby & His Orchestra, Larry Clinton & His Orchestra, and Garland (her first hit). Gary Tanner also charted with it in 1978. Iris Shapiro comments: The Demensions started at Christopher Columbus H.S. in da Bronx, NY where Iris Shapiro of the Gypsy's Caravan was a younger classmate of theirs...Lenny Dell is the only original member... who still performs with new group of Demensions on occasion. All of your promises, nothing but lies I turned your photograph face to the wall When I dim the light in my room tonight #08) Dicky Doo & the Don'ts: "Teardrops Will Fall" (1959) [61] {-} Michael Flint notes this was covered by Linda Ronstadt on her 1995 album "Feels Like Home". I'm gonna see my baby before the sun goes down I'm gonna call her baby then I'm leavin' town #18) Ricky Nelson: "My Bucket's Got A Hole In It" (1958) [18] {-} Rick Schubert comments: This was the "B" side of "Believe What You Say" (GOLQ72). It was a #2 Country hit for Hank Williams in 1949. 'Cause I had nothing to live for And looked like nothin's gonna come my way #19) Otis Redding: "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" (1968) [1] {1} The EJ's comment: Written by Otis Redding and Steve Cropper; produced by Steve Cropper. Redding's biggest hit, a million seller, #1 posthumously on both the Pop and R&B charts. On the Pop Chart it was the only one of his 28 charted singles to ever crack the Top 20! Redding finish recording it on December 7, 1967, three days before his death in a plane crash over Madison, Wisconsin. It was the first posthumous #1 hit of the rock era. He wrote the song with Cropper in California shortly after his appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival in Summer 1967. Cropper reports that Jerry Wexler at Atlantic Records, the record's distributor, had directed him to remix the track before it was released: "Wexler thought the vocal wasn't big enough and that the ocean waves and gulls were too loud. It was hard enough to deal with Otis dying, and it was killing me to change the song. I listened to it one more time, put it in a different box and sent it back. With all due respect, Atlantic never realized it was the same mix." A number of artists have covered the song, but none came anywhere near Redding's success: King Curtis & The Kingpins (an instrumental in 1968), The Dells (1969), Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 (1969), Sammy Hagar (1979), The Reddings (led by Otis' son Dexter in 1982), and Michael Bolton (1988). Michael Flint comments: Otis was killed in a plane crash (12/10/67) 3 days after this song was recorded. 4 Members of the Bar-Kays were killed in the same crash. "Dock of the Bay" became the first posthumous number-1 hit in history. In 1968, Otis won Grammy's for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song. Team Asia notes: A little irony here, if we're dealing with water. While Redding did not fall off the dock of the bay and drown, his plane crashed in a lake and he was presumed drowned. His body was never found, one of rock's more suspicious mysteries. A walkie-talkie wind-up little China doll That says wish you were here #20) Diane Renay: "Navy Blue" (1964) [6] {-} Rick Schubert notes: She was born Renee Diane Kushner. This song reached #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts. [I have to mention that I attended the same high school as Diane Renay, Northeast High of Philadelphia. However, our paths never crossed as she graduated a few years before I attended -- Barry] Into each heart yeah some tears must fall Though you love and lose you must stand tall #21) Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels: "Too Many Fish In The Sea & Three Little Fishes" (1967) [24] {-} Sold a house we once planned together Said goodbye to the folks we once knew Then I moved to a far-away city Trying hard to forget about you #22) Jack Scott: "Burning Bridges" (1960) [3] {5} Every day I listen to the certain tide And I always wonder why the sea's so wide Miles of salty water endless skies above Stretch out far between me and the one I love #23) Hank Snow: "Rockin', Rollin' Ocean" (1960) [87] {-} (Frustrated women) I mean they're frustrated Have to be in by twelve o'clock Aah that's a shame But I'm a-wishin' and a-hopin' Oh ah that just once those doors weren't locked #24) Standells: "Dirty Water" (1966) [11] {-} The EJ's say that it was written and produced by Ed Cobb. The first and biggest hit for the Los Angeles punk-rock quartet. Cole & Cole report that this is a premiere Boston area Bar Song. Sing out a message Don't be afraid of the storm Somewhere the sun is shinin' Through a silver linin' Wait and see (wait and see) #T2) Globetrotters: "Rainy Day Bells" (1970) [-] [-] Pete Olden notes this song was written by Neil Sedaka and perhaps recorded by him too. _______________________________________________________________________ THEME: Water or water-related.
