Date: Wed, 4 Jun 1997 13:03:05 GMT RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #109 (GOLQ109) First place honors go to Barry Silk and Scooter Magruder for their nearly perfect entry. Jamie, Norm, Steve, and Mike used a tie-breaker to edge out Really Rockin' in Boston for second place, while the Wicked Boys beat the Oldtunes team for fourth place by one point. Almost half of all entrants scored at least 300 in this quiz, with nearly one quarter exceeding 400, so congratulations to all are in order. The outstanding performance of so many teams on the anagrams in this quiz is suspicious, to say the least. We are sorry to have to announce that we are withholding the substantial monetary awards until we are done thoroughly investigating the rumors of leaked answers. T. P. Uschanov will soon publish GOLQ110. Good luck on it. Was it meant to encourage young people to buy U. S. Savings Bonds? Ellis: The first hit for Gary (U.S.) Bonds. Also recorded by Eddie Hodges in 1965 and Neil Diamond in 1968. A fool am I A fool am I in love #05) Theresa Brewer: "A Tear Fell" (1956) [5] {-} Ellis: Backed by Dick Jacobs' orchestra. Ivory Joe Hunter had an R&B hit with it the same year, and Ray Charles revived the song in 1964. But she'll just hear that phone keep on ringing Off the wall That's all #06) Glen Campbell: "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" (1967/68) [26] {-} Jamie: Written by Jimmy Webb, who stated that this song, "MacArthur Park," and "Worst That Could Happen" were all about the same love affair; Campbell did the song after he heard it on a Johnny Rivers (who recorded it first) LP. I walk for miles Along the highway Well, that's just my way Of sayin' I love you #07) Patsy Cline: "Walkin' After Midnight" (1957) [12] {-} Rick: Also recorded by Otis Williams & His Charms. Ellis: Cline's first pop hit, it was re-released upon her death in a 1963 plane crash, but failed to enter the Hot 100 again. Cole: This song, including these words, are in a current AT&T commercial showing frequently on U. S. television. There's a cute little cottage for two that-a-way Skies are blue that-a-way #08) Perry Como: "Hot Diggity (Dog Ziggity Boom)" (1956) [1] {-} Bob: A more-energetic-than-usual hit from The Somniferous One, a one-time barber. Ellis: Adapted from "Espana Rhapsody" by the 19th century French composer Emmanuel Chabrier. Backed by The Ray Charles Singers and Mitchell Ayres' orchestra. Goin' down to Rosedale Take my rider by my side You can still barrelhouse, baby, On the riverside #09) Cream: "Crossroads" (1969) [28] {-} Ellis: Produced by Felix Pappalardi, and recorded "live" at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. The song has gotten some recent attention in a Volkswagen commercial showing on U. S. television--the only car commercial aired during the recent "coming out" episode of "Ellen." Marc: Originally recorded in 1937 by Robert Johnson as "Cross Road Blues." Well, I went to a dance the other night Everybody went stag #10) Bobby Day: "Over And Over" (1958) [41] {F} Ellis: B-side of Day's biggest hit "Rock-in Robin." "Over And Over" is probably more closely associated with the Dave Clark Five, since it was that group's only #1 song (in 1965). Thurston Harris also recorded it in 1958. Histories of ages past Unenlightened shadows cast Down through all eternity The crying of humanity #11) Donovan: "Hurdy Gurdy Man" (1968) [5] {-} I guess it's true 'Cause once or twice you called me by her name I need you so But now I know That you don't feel the same It's all over town You put me down #12) Connie Francis: "Second Hand Love" (1962) [7] {-} T. P.: Co-written by Phil Spector. I know you're walkin' down a lonesome ro-o-oad And your heart is carryin' a heavy load I know you feel like you ain't got a friend Oh, and your whole world's cavin' in Ah, but now's the time to be strong You've got to forget him now that he's gone #13) Marvin Gaye: "That's The Way Love Is" (1969) [7] {2} Michael Gessner: Originally by the Isley Brothers. I love you so much I know what I'll do I'm clippin' your wings #14) Charlie Gracie: "Butterfly" (1957) [1] {10} Rick: He was born Charles Graci. Cole: Andy Williams' version is hideous. Ellis: Written by Kal Mann and Bernie Lowe. Gracie's first hit and only #1 was backed by Lowe's orchestra. Mann and Lowe founded the Cameo label, and 20-year-old Gracie, who sounded like Elvis Presley and was starring in a local TV series in Pittsburgh, was their first signing. I ain't got a man I ain't got a son I ain't got a daughter I ain't got no one #15) Clarence Henry: "Ain't Got No Home" (1956/57) [20] {3} T. P.: Also cut as a demo by Buddy Holly, in equally fine voice, and overdubbed for release after his death. Dan DiNardo: the flip side, "Troubles Troubles," was a big hit in Philly. Ellis: Written by Clarence "Frog Man" Henry; produced by Paul Gayten. As Henry says in this novelty tune, his first hit: "I sing like a girl/I sing like a frog." The Band also recorded the song in 1973. Let me hear Tell me dear Tell me, oo-oo-oo, you love me so #16) Little Willie John: "Talk To Me, Talk To Me" (1958) [20] {5} Now, if you love me please don't tease If I can hold you then let me squeeze My heart goes 'round and 'round My love comes a-tumblin' down #17) Jerry Lee Lewis & his Pumping Piano: "Breathless" (1958) [7] {3} Six entrants answered Marv Johnson's "You Got What It Takes." But compare the given lyrics with those from "You Got What It Takes" in GOLQ33: Now when you're near me, little girl My head goes around and 'round And when you kiss me, oh yeah My love comes tumblin' down And nobody seems to like him They can tell what he wants to do And he never shows his feelings #18) Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66: "The Fool On The Hill" (1968) [6] {-} Rick: #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts for 6 weeks. Hayley's double appearance in the title of the song reflects that she plays twin sisters in the film and that they perform the song together. I walked out on my job about a week ago And now I'm sleepin' in a telephone booth But I'm a-gonna be the richest guy around The day you say you're mine I got the hungries for your love #20) Buck Owens: "Waitin' In Your Welfare Line" (1966) [57] {-} A #1 hit on the country charts. The Red Baron" (1966/67) [2] {-} Ellis: Biggest hit for the novelty-pop sextet from Florida, their only million seller. Produced by Phil Gernhard. You hurt me And you make me cry But if you leave me I will surely die #23) Neil Sedaka: "Oh! Carol" (1959/60) [9] {27} Rick: Written for Carole King, who was Carol Klein at the time, which explains the spelling. She answered back with "Oh Neil." Ellis: Produced by Al Nevins and Don Kirshner. Sedaka's first Top 10 song. Barry of Team Asia: The name "Sedaka" means "charity" in Hebrew. I cloud nine when I want to Out of school County fair in the country sun And everything is cool Ooh Lord #24) Sly & the Family Stone: "Hot Fun In The Summertime" (1969) [2] {3} Ellis: Written and produced by Sly Stone. In his book "The Heart Of Rock & Soul," Dave Marsh describes the first chorus (before the song becomes more "soulful") as a satire, written to spoof the trivial songs of the era (such as "The Rain, The Park & Other Things" by The Cowsills). Marsh points out that the "hot" realities for many African-Americans in "summertime" 1969, when this song hit the charts, were urban tensions and rioting. Also recorded in 1982 by the funk/rock band Dayton. Well, have you ever seen a girl for whom your soul you'd give For whom you'd fight for, die for #25) Jackie Wilson: "Reet Petite (The Finest Girl You Ever Want To Meet)" (1957/58) [62] {-} ------------- Tie-breakers ------------- He'd better leave you Or you'd better put him down Because I won't stand To see you pushed around #T1) Elmore James: "It Hurts Me Too" (1965) [106] {25} Her rattlin' cough never shuts off It's nothin' but a used machine Her aluminum finish slightly diminished Is the best I ever have seen #T2) Jefferson Airplane: "Plastic Fantastic Lover" (1969) [133] {-} Bob: Off the album "Surrealistic Pillow," perhaps the legendary group's finest effort. -------- Anagrams -------- LACKING TONE #A0) Nat "King" Cole MOB SIZE #A1) Zombies SMELLY WAR #A2) Mary Wells YAM VINEGAR #A3) Marvin Gaye "DANNY K", A GROUP, SANG #A4) Spanky and Our Gang NO SONGSTER ILL #A5) Rolling Stones ENGINE TYPE #A6) Gene Pitney TRAINED MAN #A7) Dean Martin STEERS NAVY #A8) Ray Stevens KING LEAR'S MAD, NO FUN #A9) Simon and Garfunkel The following entrants unscrambled all of the anagrams (but some of them don't know how to spell "Garfunkel.")
