Besides them, only Jamie Lubin and Norm Katuna got over 400 points, but many entrants did better than on my previous quiz, which is comforting. Thanks to everyone for their entries and comments! -- T P Uschanov ______________________________________________________________________ There is a "+" after Score below for each tie-breaker answered correctly; a "-" indicates partial credit. Du hast ihr weh getan Sie wusste nicht warum Du warst nicht schuld daran Und drehtest dich nicht um #02) Die Beatles: "Sie liebt Dich (She Loves You)" (1964) [97] {n/c} Howard Teitelbaum: Recorded 29 January 1964, by an English group, in France, singing in German. At the request of Odeon, EMI's German label, the Fabs recorded two songs "auf deutsch" during their French concert tour, the other being "Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand" ("I Want to Hold Your Hand"). For "Sie Liebt Dich", the original two-track recording of "She Loves You" from 1 July 1963 had been scrapped once the mono mix was made, so the song had to be re-recorded in its entirety. For "Komm ...", they were able to re-use the instrumental tracks from the original, overdubbing new vocals and handclaps. Although the group knew a smidgen of German from their trips to Hamburg, a translator from Odeon, identified only as "Nicolas", crafted the German lyrics. Here's a (probably flawed) literal translation of this excerpt, adjacent to the original English lyrics: You have hurt her She said you hurt her so She does not know why She almost lost her mind You weren't to blame for that But now she says she knows And don't turn around You're not the hurtin' kind In that same recording session, after the two German songs, the group switched back to Anglo-Saxon and recorded "Can't Buy Me Love". The EJs & Co.: The Beatles only foreign-language hit. The English version of the song hit the chart five months earlier, and was the Beatles' second #1 song. Included on their 1980 album "Rarities". Nowhere is there warmth to be found Among those afraid of losing their ground Rain-gray town known for its sound In places, small faces unbound #03) The Byrds: "Eight Miles High" (1966) [14] {-} There ain't nothing green but the rich man's money The buildings are so tall the sun can't shine #04) The Candymen: "Georgia Pines" (1967) [81] {-} Although this song by Roy Orbison's backing group has been discussed recently on rec.music.rock-pop-r+b.1960s, nobody got it. I begged to be adored Yes, and I lost control And tumbled overboard Gladly (yeeah) that magic night we kissed (there we kissed) Oh we kissed (there we kissed) oh we kissed (there we kissed) Oh we kissed (there we kissed) there in the moon mist #05) The Cleftones: "Heart and Soul" (1961) [18] {10} The Coasters: #1 in 1938 for Larry Clinton. I'll give you jewelry and money, too That ain't all, that ain't all I'd do for you #06) Sam Cooke: "Bring It on Home to Me" (1962) [13] {2} Howard Teitelbaum: B-side of "Having a Party"; backing vocals on both sides were by Lou Rawls. This song was covered by The Animals (1965), Eddie Floyd (1968), and Rawls himself (1970). It also inspired the "answer" song "I'll Bring it Home to You" by Carla Thomas (1962). Team Asia: Like all the British groups who improved American black songs, the Animals had a much catchier version. If you wanted a love to last forever Then I would send my love your way And my love'd not only last forever But forever and a day #07) The Drifters: "Sweets for My Sweet" (1961) [16] {10} Team Asia: Ditto, the Searchers. The EJs & Co.: Rudy Lewis sang lead. Later recorded, in 1979, by Tony Orlando. I'm gonna drink a lot of coffee, spend a little cash Make that girl love me when I put on some trash You can understand why I've got to get back #08) Jimmy Gilmer & The Fireballs: "Sugar Shack" (1963) [1] {1} The EJs & Co.: Produced by Norman Petty. The group's only #1 song, a million seller. Jyrki Ilva: In Finland the song was recorded by Pirkko Mannola as "Nasta mesta". T.P.: I haven't heard her version, but it really must be something. He stands there laughing with his hands on his hips And then he hits you with a can of beans #09) The Kingsmen: "The Jolly Green Giant" (1965) [4] {25} The EJs & Co.: The same tune as The Olympics' "Big Boy Pete", but with different lyrics. The song was inspired by the commercials for Green Giant foods. The Kingsmen's second biggest hit, after the classic "Louie Louie". Do the bird, pretty bird, 'cause the bird is the word Do the dog, dirty dog, like a daddy frog Do the shake, little shake, like a hairy ape #10) Mickey Lee Lane: "Shaggy Dog" (1964) [38] {n/c} Jamie Lubin: Co-written by Mickey. The Coasters: He was born Mickey Lee Schreiber. If she walks by, the menfolks get engrossed If she winks an eye, bread slices turn to toast If she got a lot of what they call "the most" #11) Little Richard & His Band: "The Girl Can't Help It" (1956) [49] {7} Howard Teitelbaum: Title song from the movie starring Jayne Mansfield. You know I want your lovin' But not for just today We've got to fly ahead Or else our love will surely slip away #12) The Majors: "A Little Bit Now (A Little Bit Later)" (1962) [63] {-} IMO, much better than their bigger hit, "A Wonderful Dream". Whenever he calls my name so slow, sweet and plain Right there, right then, I feel that burning flame Has high blood pressure got a hold on me Or is this the way love's supposed to be? #13) Martha & The Vandellas: "Heat Wave" (1963) [4] {1} The EJs & Co.: Written by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland; produced by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier. The first record by the group to reach the top 10 ... Linda Ronstadt also had a big hit with it in 1975. Howard Teitelbaum: Lead vocals by Denny Laine, later of Wings (Sir Paul's band). Original (uncharted) version by Bessie Banks featured Cissy Houston & Dee Dee Warwick as background singers. Stand back, dietician Stand back, television Stand back, politician Stand back, mortician #14) The Steve Miller Band: "Living in the U.S.A." (1968,1974) [94,49] {-,-} From "Sailor", in Curt Miller and Steve Potter's words "his second and best LP ... Featured Boz Scaggs on guitar. Listen to this LP and estimate how far a fall it was from this great effort to dreck like 'Fly Like An Eagle' or 'Jungle Love'." I don't want you to tell me just what you intend to do now 'Cause how many times do I have to tell you darlin', darlin' I'm still in love with you now Whoa-oh-oh-oh #15) The Moody Blues: "Go Now!" (1965) [10] {-} The EJs & Co.: A cover of the 1964 single by R&B singer Bessie Banks. The first hit by the group in their initial configuration, led by guitarist-vocalist Denny Laine. Sweet thing, baby, you're now my love Don't you know I'm gonna share you Baby, said with no one, who-oo, babe The thought of your embrace You know, it set my soul on fire The way you tease me, baby, and tantalize Fill me with desire #16) The Olympics: "Mine Exclusively" (1966) [99] {25} Available on the third volume of Rhino Records' new CD series, "Brown-Eyed Soul: The Sound Of East L.A.", which I haven't seen in the stores here yet. It means so much to be a part Of the heart of a wonderful one When other lovers are gone We'll live on We'll live on #17) Peter & Gordon: "Nobody I Know" (1964) [12] {-} Written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. I live on the west side She lives on the east side of the street And though they say that east is east, and west is west And never the twain shall meet #18) Gene Pitney: "Mecca" (1963) [12] {-} Your multilingual business friend Has packed her bags and fled Leaving only ash-filled ashtrays And the lipsticked, unmade bed #19) Procol Harum: "Homburg" (1967) [34] {-} You take your choice at this time The brave old world or the slide To the depths of decline #20) The Rolling Stones: "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" (1966) [9] {-} The EJs & Co.: Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham. Now a word from our sponsor, you better listen Laid-up Stroganoff, new short line of cigarette Each cigarette two puffs That's all you got time for, work 22 hours day so fine Is only cigarette with microphone filter So be careful, comrades, secret police are listening Is only cigarette I smoke, right, comrade Mamarelitchev? Right, is only cigarette you can buy! #21) Spencer & Spencer with the Sonia Pryor Choir: "Russian Band Stand" (1959) [91] {-} Jim Medellin: Produced by Dickie Goodman, on the Chess (!) label. Includes Russian-sounding snippets of rock and roll which are actually Chuck Berry licks played backwards. The EJs & Co.: The only charted single by this "group", actually the two novelty record producers Dickie Goodman and Mickey Shorr. (Come on home) I'm coming home, baby, now (You know I'm waiting at the door) They can't hold me back, I'll know-ow-ow-ow-ow (All alone) I'm pressing on, baby, now (And pacing up and down the floor) Oh, hear me holler and hear me roam (Say you'll be with me) Gonna be with you e-ver-more #22) Mel Torme: "Comin' Home Baby" (1962) [36] {-} Jyrki Ilva: There's also a good Finnish cover version of the tune by Ann Christine & the Renegades. The EJs & Co.: "The Velvet Fog's" only charted song in the rock era. Guitarist Travis Wammack's instrumental version of the song, entitled "Scratchy", made the chart in 1964. Why don't you all f-f-fade away And don't try to dig what we all s-s-say I'm not trying to cause a big s-s-sensation #23) The Who: "My Generation" (1966) [74] {-} The EJs & Co.: Written by Pete Townshend; produced by Shel Talmy. Notable for its groundbreaking use of guitar feedback, John Entwistle's bass work, and Keith Moon's drumming. Sweet things you said to me-e Went straight to my head Now you're loving someone else And I wish it were me instead #24) Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs: "I Remember" (1961) [86] {-} Both Jackie Wilson and Nancy Wilson were popular guesses. There'll be things that will excite And make you dream of me at night #25) The Yardbirds: "For Your Love" (1965) [6] {-} The EJs & Co.: Written by Graham Gouldman; produced by Giorgio Gomelsky. The first and biggest hit for the group. Tie-breakers: Though I've said it all before I'll say it more and more Now that I'm really sure you love me And I know that from today I'll see it in the way That you look at me and say you love me #T1) Cilla Black: "Love of the Loved" (1963) [-] {-} Howard Teitelbaum: This was one of the songs The Beatles performed at their unsuccessful 1 January 1962 audition for Decca. The third Lennon-McCartney song in this quiz. It was a big hit in Britain, but at a time when the Beatles and British pop music still meant very little in America. I dressed you like a queen Trying to make a lady out of you I took you out of the country But I just couldn't take the country out of you #T2) The Flamingos: "You Ain't Ready" (1953) [-] {-} Probably this classic group's best jump tune, but nobody got it! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This chart ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized. The second number on the line denotes the avg. no. of points scored on that song (total points divided by number of entrants, to 1 decimal place). Meanwhile, "Shaggy Dog" was well-known considering that the song hit only #38 and is not available on many re-issues. -- "I have tried too, in my time, to be a philosopher; but, I don't know how, cheerfulness was always breaking in." --Oliver Edwards T P Uschanov tuschano@cc.helsinki.fi +358 (0)40 584 2720 Visit my home page! http://www.helsinki.fi/~tuschano/
