Date: Fri, 1 May 1998 04:39:54 GMT RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #123 (GOLQ123) Thanks to all who entered GOLQ123. Many entrants noticed that the artists' names for songs #01 - 25 begin with A, B, C . . . Z. The only unused letter is X, for which no pop singles artist charted from 1955- 1969. To make up for this omission, both tie-breaker artists have at least one "x" in their names. The mean and median scores were a high 280.1 and 284, respectively, but this quiz was not easy for the experts, there being no 500-point entries and only three entries scoring above 400. Congratulations to Really Rockin' in Boston, Team Silk, and Team Lubin for their 1-2-3 finishes, respectively. Alice Perry again tops the single-person field. The response to the anagrams was overwhelmingly positive. Thank you, Bob, for composing them. Many of you solved them, both with and without software assistance. Perhaps next time not so many of them will be on the GOLQ Used List! Barry has already posted GOLQ124. Again, our thanks to everyone who participated! -- Bob and Marc Replace all occurrences of "&" in all e-mail addresses with "@". ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tie Breaker Scoring Key + after numeric score below indicates a tie-breaker answered correctly. - indicates partial credit. x indicates a totally incorrect guess. . indicates no guess. # on Pos Score ID Name E-mail address team age(s) ---+-----+--+-------------------------------------------------------+-+-------- 1 480+x RR Really Rockin' In Boston 4 40s,50 2 460+x BS Barry Silk, Scooter Magruder, Joe Haertel, Jenny McCaw 4 40s 3 420xx JL Jamie Lubin & Norm Katuna 2 52 4 386+x DE Ellie, Di, Rich, Bill, Desi, Hi, Magpie, DTAB 8 30-62 5 376+x AP Alice Perry 1 47 6 374.+ IS The Gypsy's Caravan 4 21+ 7 370.. The first and only #1 hit for the English quintet. Before The Animals, the song had traditionally been sung from a female perspective. Also charted for Frijid Pink (1970), Santa Esmeralda Starring Leroy Gomez (1977), and Dolly Parton (1981). But what does it bring If I ain't got you? Ain't got Baby, you don't know what it's like #02) Bee Gees: To Love Somebody (1967) [17] {-} The Brothers Gibb's second U.S. hit. The trio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year. Jyrki informs that this song was redone by the Sweet Inspirations. Dear Lord above, don't you see I'm pinin' I got tears all in my eyes Why don't you send down that cloud with the silver linin' Lift me up to paradise? #03) Charles, Ray: That Lucky Old Sun (1963/64) [20] {n/c} EJ's: Six versions of this song charted in 1949: those by Frankie Laine (#1 for 8 weeks, a million-seller), Vaughn Monroe & His Orchestra, Sarah Vaughn, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, and Bob Houston. Someday your eyes will fill with tears when you need me You'll think it's too late But my love will wait 'til eternity #04) Dion & the Belmonts: A Lover's Prayer (1959) [73] {-} The flip side of "Every Little Thing I Do." A year later The Belmonts (Angelo D'Aleo, Freddie Milano, and Carlo Mastrangelo) and Dion parted ways to record separately. Mmmm you got a way about you Now I can't live without you #05) Everly Brothers, The: ('Til) I Kissed You (1959) [4] {22} Written by Don, and, as Rick Schubert tells us, they're backed by the Crickets. Red, yellow, honey, sassafras, and moonshine Red, yellow, honey, sassafras, and moonshine #06) 5th Dimension, The: Stoned Soul Picnic (1968) [3] {2} EJ's: Written by Laura Nyro, the first of several hits she wrote for the Los Angeles quintet. Rick notes this was a platinum record. Too many mountains, and not enough stairs to climb Too many churches, and not enough truth Too many people, and not enough eyes to see Too many lives to lead, and not enough time #07) Guess Who, The: Undun (1969) [22] {-} The flip side of "Laughing" (GOLQ078). Barry Chamish offers this true story: "I grew up in the same neighbourhood as Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman. They had already released two albums, Wheatfield Soul and Canned Wheat when I met Bachman at a hamburger joint. I told him my idea for the title of their next album. He smiled and a couple of weeks later Cummings informed me that RCA was going with the title and I'd get credit on the album. Sadly for me, their next song, American Woman was such a big hit that the album was named after the song. The album title that almost was: And The Wheat Goes On." And then when love is stronger Perhaps you'll give your heart and promise me we'll never part, oh no #08) Humperdinck, Englebert: Winter World Of Love (1969/70) [16] {-} 'Cause each day that passes by You got me never knowin' if I'm comin' or goin' #09) Isley Brothers, The: This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You) (1966) [12] {6} One of only three artists (with Ray Charles and The Four Seasons) to hit Billboard's pop singles charts in each of the last five decades. I used to go to parties all alone But now I can't see how I lived a life of misery But things are different now #10) Jan & Dean: I Found A Girl (1965) [30] {-} And as I looked again Your face came into sight I couldn't walk on Until you'd gone #11) Kramer, Billy J., with The Dakotas: From A Window (1964) [23] {n/c} Alice Perry observes that Billy J. Kramer was a Brian Epstein discovery, and that the song was written for Kramer by Lennon & McCartney. Rick mentions that Chad & Jeremy's version hit #97 in 1965. Well, come on, baby, I love you so I'll never, never let you go Come on, baby, will you treat me nice Please don't put my love on ice #12) Lymon, Frankie, and the Teenagers: I Want You To Be My Girl (1956) [13] {3} I wonder, I wonder why you had to leave me this way I'm sorry, darling, that I made you cry Forgive me, love, for the things I've done to you Come on home, come on home, give me one more try #13) Moore, Bobby, & the Rhythm Aces: Searching For My Love (1966) [27] {7} I hate to face your dad Too bad (too bad) I know he's gonna be mad #14) Nelson, Ricky: It's Late (1959) [9] {30} EJ's: The flip side of "Never Be Anyone Else But You." I first saw her at a dance All I could think of was romance I asked her if she'd dance with me Her answer really startled me #15) Otis, Johnny, Show: Mumblin' Mosie (1960) [80] {-} Despite recording success, Otis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as a "non-performer." Putting the alphabetical scheme to their use, a few entrants guessed each of the seemingly lyrics-appropriate "Olympics: (I Wanna) Dance With The Teacher" and "Esther & Abi: Cinderella Rockefella." However, the "answer" that, as Johnny sings, "really startled me," was in fact Mosie's serious stuttering. Just laughing and gay like a clown I seem to be what I'm not, you see #16) Platters, The: The Great Pretender (1955/56) [1] {1} EJ's: Written and produced by Buck Ram. The first #1 hit for the Los Angeles quintet, a million-seller. Also #1 on the R&B chart for 11 weeks. The preacher said, "Will you take this woman to be your wife To love and to cherish for the rest of your life?" #17) Quin-Tones, The: Down The Aisle Of Love (1958) [18] {5} The sole hit of the Pennsylvania vocal group. Sands was later married to Nancy Sinatra for a few years. Though she's pleasin' you With those smiles she's puttin' down You're the jivest cat in town Don'tcha know that my baby love me #20) Tee, Willie: Teasin' You (1965) [97] {12} T. P. opines, "Along with its flip side 'Walkin' Up a One Way Street,' one of the great double-sided soul 45s of all time." Willie Tee was born Wilson Turbinton. Get out of my mind My love for you is way out of line #21) Union Gap, The, featuring Gary Puckett: Young Girl (1968) [2] {-} EJ's: The biggest hit for the quintet, a million-seller. Puckett was born in Hibbing, Minnesota, where Bob Dylan was raised. Well, my heart starts a-hoppin' like a kangaroo My feet do things they never done before #22) Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps: Bluejean Bop (1956) [49] {-} Vincent Eugene Craddock. Heartaches are calling, tears are falling because of you, hey yeah And when you're gone, you know I'm the one to go to her rescue Maybe you didn't know that bit You're gonna leave her once too many times And when you come back that girl's gonna be mine all mine, hey hey #23) Wonder, Stevie: Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day (1968) [9] {1} Written by H. Cosby, S. Moy, and Stevie. Now, honey, please Squeeze me tight Don't you want your baby to be all right? #24) Young Rascals, The: Good Lovin' (1966) [1] {-} EJ's: Written by Rudy Clark and Arthur Resnick; produced by the Rascals with Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd. A cover of the 1965 recording by the Olympics. The first #1 record by the New York quartet, "Good Lovin'" features notable performances by Felix Cavaliere on organ, Gene Cornish on guitar, and Dino Danelli on drums. Now it's been ten thousand years Man has cried a billion tears #25) Zager and Evans: In The Year 2525 (Exordium And Terminus) (1969) [1] {-} Rick's research reveals that it was originally released in 1968. It also hit #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts. EJ's: One of the "ultimate" one-hit wonders (a song that went to #1, but the artists never charted again). The Nebraska duo did release one follow-up single, but Denny Zager had already decided to quit before "2525" ended its run on the charts. Marc notes: A horrible, horrible song. ------------ Tie-breakers ------------ If you can just get your mind together Then come on across to me We'll hold hands and then we'll watch the sun rise From the bottom of the sea But first #T1) Hendrix, Jimi, Experience, The: Are You Experienced? (1967) [-] {-} "... are you experienced? Or have you ever been experienced? Well I have." The title song from the legendary guitarist's group's ground-breaking album. Call me Send me telegrams Tell me I'm your sweetie pie And you're my ideal guy When you hold me never, never let me go For that moment is the moment that I love you so #T2) Six Teens, The: Send Me Flowers (1956) [-] {-} The original members, three females and three males, were all teens when this L.A. vocal group formed in 1956. This song singlehandedly inspired the GOLQ archivist, Bob Clements, to enter this quiz. A very infrequent participant, Bob writes, "I had to [enter], though, to support the inclusion of #T2. . . . I had to go extract it from a reel-to-reel tape and suck it into the computer, clean up the hum and scratches, and listen to it a few times." ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ANAGRAMMIN' DA GOLD ANSWERS #A1) HERMAN?
