RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #130 Congratulations to the team of BARRY SILK, SCOOTER MAGRUDER, JOE HAERTEL and JENNY McCAW for winning GOLQ 130 with an impressive score of 480. The team of JAMIE LUBIN and MIKE WESTON tied with THE GYPSY'S CARAVAN for second with 440. RANDY PRICE won the individual award with 400.+, while JAMES WHITE had the greatest improvement from GOLQ 129 with an increase of 93 points. The tie-breaker theme was songs from rock/pop operas, and obscure ones at that. I thought this GOLQ would be a little difficult, but it turned out to be harder than even I planned, with an average score of 276, and only four teams breaking 400. My next quiz will definitely be easier. Thanks to everyone for entering. Barry has already posted GOLQ 131. -- Rich Ardini _____________________________________________________________________________ After each score below are two characters representing the two tie-breakers: A "+" indicates a tie-breaker answered correctly; a "-" indicates partial credit; an "x" indicates a totally incorrect guess; a "." indicates no guess. Take a look at the world and the state that it's in today I am sure you'll agree, we ought to make it a better way With our love, we're together, everybody learn to love each other Instead of fussing and fighting, cheating, back-biting, Scandalizing and hating #06) Jimmy Cliff: "Wonderful World, Beautiful People" (1969) [25] {-} The Jamaican born singer starred in "The Harder They Come". The first and biggest hit for the English pop quintet. RL: Many forget that the single didn't have the cold ending commonly heard since 1967, at least in the States. The British single did have it. But if I'd been a man in reality You'd still be here, babe, lovin' me Now the nights are long and lonely And I ain't too strong, babe, I just miss you so #11) The 4 Seasons: "Working My Way Back To You" (1966) [9] {-} EJs,TO: Successfully revived by the Spinners in their #2 medley from 1979, "Working My Way Back To You/Forgive Me, Girl." So here's to the golden moon And here's to the silver sea And mostly, here's a toast to you and me #12) Don Ho and The Aliis: "Tiny Bubbles" (1966) [57] {-} Don can still be heard singing this song nightly at the Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel as part of the pact he made with the devil for his fifteen minutes of fame. TO: He made guest appearances on many TV shows. Have you heard when love begins to die It leaves someone to cry, night and day Like a bird, you left your robin's nest And just like all the rest, you flew away #13) The Jarmels: "A Little Bit Of Soap" (1961) [12] {-} EJs: Produced by Bert Berns. And if I'm not first on your list Count me blue #14) Gary Lewis And The Playboys: "Count Me In" (1965) [2] {-} EJs: Produced by Snuff Garrett; Gary's father, Jerry Lewis, was Garrett's neighbor. HT: Gary discussed this song in the liner notes to EMI's compilation CD: "We went into the studio looking for a second record and [producer] Snuff Garrett said to me, 'Don't get real cocky or anything like that just because "This Diamond Ring" went to #1 ... we gotta concentrate and make this second one the best.' We were in the studio for about two days, just cutting song after song, and at the end of it Snuff just said 'Nope, there's just nothing here that I want to put out.' Right then, at four in the morning, Glen D. Hardin walks in and says, 'Listen to this. I just kinda finished it. Let me know what you think,' and he played "Count Me In" on the piano. Snuff jumped up and said, 'That's it! Let's record it right now.'" The rest of the Playboys provided backing instruments, but not backing vocals -- these were provided by a studio group called The Eligibles (Ron Hicklin, Al Capps, Stan Farber). The B-side was an endearing hot-rod tune called "Little Miss Go Go." Girl, don't you know we could work it out with talking You won't turn around or slow down your walking I've given you everything with a kiss to seal it You had to get your kicks out of trying to steal it #15) The Monkees: "Words" (1967) [11] {-} Micky and Peter swap lead vocals on this Boyce-Hart song. I wants to t-tire for pretendin' You dig me on a scooby-doo I dig you on a scooby-die You ol' boog-a-boo you You ol' boog-a-boo you, little girl #17) P. J. Proby: "Niki Hoeky" (1967) [23] {-} EJs: Written by Pat and Lolly Vegas. The last charted song for the Houston-born singer who sounded like Elvis Presley. Why do they always pass me by? Why don't they stop when I give them the eye? Why don't those pretty girls ever see There's a lot of love in a little package like me? #18) The Rocky Fellers: "Like The Big Boys Do" (1963) [55] {-} This follow-up to "Killer Joe" was the last to be heard from this father and four son group from the Phillipines. Oh I'm all alone now, no love to shield me Trapped in a world that's a distorted reality #19) Diana Ross And The Supremes: "Reflections" (1967) [2] {-} Several: Written by Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier & Brian Holland. RL: From the movie "Candy". Ours a love I held tightly Feeling the rapture glow Like a flame burning brightly But when she left, gone was the glow #23) Bobby Vinton: "Blue Velvet" (1963) [1] {-} EJs: Written by Bernie Wayne and Lee Morris. Hit #1 on both the Pop and Adult Contemporary charts. After recording "Blue On Blue," by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Vinton did a theme album of all blue songs (e.g., "Blue Moon," "Blue Hawaii"). Publisher Al Gallico suggested he do "Blue Velvet," which had been a modest hit for Tony Bennett in 1951. Vinton preferred "Am I Blue" to be the single from the album, but Epic picked "Blue Velvet" anyway, and it became one of Vinton's biggest hits. Also charted for The Statues in 1960. JL: #14 R&B hit in '55 for the Clovers. LE: Many consider a version by the Moonglows to be much superior. Won't you guide us and protect us Through the years that lie ahead? Won't you fill our hearts with sunshine On the day that we are wed? #24) Billy Ward And His Dominoes: "St. Therese Of The Roses" (1956) [13] {-} Jackie Wilson sang lead. Remember, remember when I needed you so bad Remember, remember what you had to say You told me to go find another shoulder to cry on Then you laughed You laughed and you walked away #25) Timi Yuro: "What's A Matter Baby (Is It Hurting You)" (1962) [12] {-} Ellen "Paradise by The Dashboard Light" Foley, did an impressive version of this, backed by Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson. ------------ Tie-Breakers ------------ I see you haven't found your man The diamond's on the other hand Well a man is hard to find in a woman's land Oh, don't let too many tears wash away your dreams Just tell yourself that nothing matters, but be prepared 'Cause someday girl, you'll forget my name And all I ever said to you, and all I've ever meant to you Now Katherine's getting up and I've got things to do #T1) Neon Philharmonic: "Morning Girl (Later)" (1969) [-] {-} Grand finale of Tupper Saussy's phonograph opera with a self- proclaimed theme of desperation, "The Moth Confesses". Warner Brothers had an unexpected success the year before with the concept album "The Sea" by Rod McKuen, and saw this as its successor. The single, "Morning Girl", which ended the first side, reached #17 but the album was less successful. A later single, "Heighdy-Ho Princess" was also in the same spirit. The late Don Gant provided the vocals, and the Nashville Symphony supplied most of the chamber- sized orchestra. TA: Neon Philharmonic combined classical orchestration with profound themes, fresh lyrics and catchy music. It's Sunday morning, bright and clear Lovely flowers decorate a marbled square People cry and walk away Think about that fateful day Now they wish they'd given Jack More affection and respect #T2) Keith West: "Excerpts From A Teenage Opera" (1967) [109] {-} Mark Wirtz's masterwork was a work-in-progress for most of the 60s and was never completely finished, but this single, also known as "Grocer Jack" and featuring Keith West on vocals, was one of the most played records in England during the Summer of Love. Other names associated with the project included Steve Howe and Nick Lowe. A CD containing most of the songs and instrumental tracks that were part of the project was released a couple of years ago. TA: The words were unlike anything of the era. The song is about a grocery deliverer who is barely noticed until he dies; then the town realizes they don't eat without him. Song has a complicated theme (worth of each person in the cycle of life). ________________________________________________________________________ This chart ranks the songs from most recognized to the least recognized. The third number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that song (total points divided by the number of entrants, to 1 decimal place). For comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 0-20 point scale. Rank Song Avg. The two school songs, #02 and #21, were among the last songs put in, and they definitely dragged down the average. The others were about where I expected them to be. _____________________
