Corrected RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #135 (GOLQ135) These results have been updated to include an entry from Team Corning that had been sent before the quiz deadline but that was either lost or misplaced. It looked like Really Rockin' In Boston had this one wrapped up. For over a week since they sent in their preliminary round, they held the lead. They increased it with three hours to go with their final entry but not a minute later Gypsy Caravan toppled them by a song. These two fine teams won by a big lead, just as the Barry Silk team, Randy Price and Old Tunes had hefty leads on their nearest competition. Great perseverance was required by these five fine teams who cracked the 400 mark. But everyone did well on this quirky quiz. All songs were identified yet no one managed a perfect round. Still, look at the high average score of 288.4 and high median score of 280. You all did great. And thanks for being so great. Somebody help me get out of Louisiana Just help me get to Houston town There are people there who care about me And won't let the poor boy down #02) Chuck Berry: Promised Land (1964) [41] {NC} Mike Weaver agrees after doing this quiz that Israelis are, indeed, an unpredictable people... But this was a predictable choice. It's also my choice for Berry's bounciest song. 'Cause it would turn into a nightmare It isn't fair #03) Terry Black: Unless You Care (1964) [99] {-} Not many contestants guessed this ditty by the legendary Terry Black...a legend in Vancouver, British Columbia, at least. He was backed on guitar by Glenn Campbell on this song. Who left the water running? #04) The Box Tops: Cry Like A Baby (1968) [2] {-} The EJs note that this song was co-written by Dan Penn. "The lyric line quoted here is a nod to another Penn soul composition, 'You Left The Water Running.'" Jonathan Cole observes that the line was "not part of the published lyric, just a cute aftercall." One day I know I'll be home again Please wait #05) The Classics: Till Then (1963) [20] {-} Who calls the English teacher Daddy-o? #06) The Coasters: Charlie Brown (1959) [2] {2} If this song ever comes up again on a future quiz, I would recommend using the equally familiar lines: Who me?/Yeah, you. Knotted, polka-dotted, Twisted, beaded, braided, Powdered, flowered and confetti, Mangled, tangled, spangled and spaghetti #07) The Cowsills: Hair (1969) [2] {-} Only David Bromberg thought to mention that this was the theme song to the great Off then 0n-Broadway musical, Hair. Aaah, people like to talk Let them have their way They can take a walk We'll make out okay #08) Johnny Crawford: Rumors (1962) [12] {-} I was bewildered that no one mentioned that Crawford played the Rifleman's son or that he sang much better than Chuck Conners. Has she waited just for me You can see it all in your crystal ball Tell me that it's meant to be Tell me, tell me, tell me #09) Bobby Curtola: Fortuneteller (1962) [41] {-} Curtola was the last Canadian artist to hit the American charts for three more years. You decide Watcha gonna do Now do you want my love Or are we through #10) Dale & Grace: I'm Leaving It Up To You (1963) [1] {6} One day I feel so happy (wah-ooh) Next day I feel so sad I guess I'll learn to take (wah-ooh) The good with the bad #11) Dion and The Belmonts: A Teenager In Love (1959) [5] {-} If I could (If I could) My folks won't let me 'cause they say that she's no good #12) The Four Seasons: Rag Doll (1964) [1] {-} The Teitelbaums remind us that the flip side was Silence Is Golden, later a #1 hit for the Tremeloes, who recorded a rather, in my opinion, sappy cover. Nonetheless, the Four Seasons had one of the most memorable double-sided 45 RPMs ever released. Just the way you say goodnight to me Brings the feeling On inside of me #13) Guess Who: Shakin' All Over (1965) [22] {-} The most comment came for this song. Antonio Torralba praises Johnny Kidd and the Pirates original version and "fully disagrees with rock critic Dave Marsh's opinion preferring the Guess Who's version." I go with Marsh, the Guess Who defined the song and gave it the oomph it was missing. The EJ's note the group's real name was Chad Allan and The Expressions but "released it under the name Guess Who, possibly to make American listeners think they were a British band." Close but not on the money. It so happens I've got the inside scoop. I grew up with the band. I knew Burton Cummings from school and Timmy Bachman, Randy's brother and later guitarist of BTO, played in my little teenage rock band until he discovered we had no talent. Shakin' All Over was released not by The Guess Who but by "Guess Who?" No Canadian song had hit the international charts for three years and no American radio station would push a Canadian act. The name Guess Who hid their origins and hinted the song might be by a known band. The Four Seasons used the same trick a year later when they released Don't Think Twice by Wonder Who? Now's the time Don't you know To get into a new kind of dream You've been living alone With no Bell telephone #14) Herman's Hermits: Sleepy Joe (1968) [61] {-} Strangely, no one had a a comment about the Hermits' last chartbuster. I saw her walkin' on down the line You know I saw her for the very first time #15) Tommy James And The Shondells: Hanky Panky (1965) [1] {39} A few contestants noted that the song was originally released by the Raindrops. Well, I think I finally found A surefire way to forget It's so simple I'm surprised I hadn't Done thought of it before yet #16) Roger Miller: One Dyin' And A Buryin' (1965) [34] {-} The next day she was gone And I knew she lied to me She left me with a broken heart Won her victory #17) Ricky Nelson: Poor Little Fool (1958) [1] {3} The EJs again point out a significant fact: this song was the first Number One on the new Billboard Hot 100, which would eventually become the rulebook for this contest. I, (I), I, (I), I, (I), I, (I), I, (I), I, (I), I, (I), I, (I) I, (I), I, (I), I, (I), I, (I) #18) Richard and The Young Lions: Open Up Your Door (1966) [99] {-} Mike Weaver complains, "Hope you're happy- I had to dig out my copy and count the "I"s." Yes, we are pleased but if there were only 23 I's, would he have complained to the quiz committee? I'm going with my baby And I won't be back for four years If I find me a new love I won't be back at all #19) Mitch Ryder And The Detroit Wheels: Jenny Take A Ride! (1966) [10] {-} Richard And The Young Lions took out their revenge by neutralizing those who voted for C.C. Rider by Bobby Powell, which is included in Ryder's amalgamation with Jenny Take A Ride. To complicate matters, L'Equipe reminds us that Eric Burdon and the Animals covered the same song and called it See See Rider. I close my eyes for a second And pretend it's me you want Meanwhile I try to act So nonchalant #20) The Searchers: When You Walk In The Room (1965) [35] It was duly noted that Jackie De Shannon had a version of the song out at about the same time that did poorly. Drink, drink, everyone drink It's not as bad as you used to think #21) Allan Sherman : The Drinking Man's Diet (1965) [99] {-} Tom O'Connor writes: "The Flip side of this 45 is called 'The Large Dark Aaardvark Song.' As kids we played the heck out of it and 'sang' it in our lip-synch band." I never thought I'd, uh, Cut a record by myself But I got something I wanna say #22) Sonny: Laugh At Me (1965) [10] {-} Sonny Bono was murdered in a skiing "accident," a fate shared by too many clean and ethical American politicians in the past several years. Let me take you, baby, down to the river bed Got to tell you something, go right to your head #23) Spirit: I Got A Line On You (1969) [25] {-} When the sun says good day To the mountains #24) Lucille Starr: The French Song (Quand Le Soleil Dit Bonjour Aux Montagnes) (1964) [54] {-} All you needed to get this song was basic French. I was disappointed more entrants didn't catch my giveaway guess. It just proves you get more points by playing with the Top 100 book. You got that funny little look Baby, in your eye Ooh-wee baby, I just wanna die #25) Larry Williams: You Bug Me, Baby (1957) [45] {-} Gypsy Caravan observed that this number was co-written by songster 22, Sonny Bono. _____________________________ Tie-Breakers _____________________________ I know a doctor Uh-uh oh what a doctor Who spends all of his time U-up in everyone's octors #T1) Larry "Wild Man" Fischer backed by Frank Zappa And The Mothers Of Invention: (Let's Do) The Taster 19?? [-] {?} My gang played the bizarre double album An Evening With Wild Man Fischer more often than Abbey Road and memorized all the lyrics for their hidden truths. And who could forget the album cover with Fischer holding a knife to the throat of a sweet old lady with a sign around her neck reading, "mother?" This quiz proves it must have been a local phenomenon. Yet Rhino Records did re-release the record and recorded three new Wild Man Fischer albums in the '80s. Hello kiddies Here I am on the old school yard I got thrill pills for all the little chickies I got funny cigarettes for all you boys #T2) The Fugs: Dirty Old Man 19?? [-] {-} One of the most influential groups never to have a single on the top 100 charts. It's doubtful this group of anarchists was striving for that. Yet who can forget to recall the opening lyrics to this classic song?: "Hanging on by the scoob of your dick/Looking up every dress I can. Now after all these years, does anyone know what a scoob is? _____________________________________________________________________________ This chart ranks the songs from most recognized to the least recognized. The third number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that song (total points divided by the number of entrants, to 2 decimal places). For comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 0-20 point scale. Rank Song Avg. I can't understand how so many caught my hints about Drinking Man's Diet and Fortuneteller, yet missed The French Song. And I'm flabbergasted that there isn't one Wild Man Fischer fan in the bunch but relieved the Fugs are still in people's memories. Other than that, there is predictable logic to the song rankings.
