Sorry for the delay in preparing and posting these results! Barry Silk & Co. took their x(n)th victory in this quiz series, followed by several other stalwarts, many of whom improved their results from my previous quiz (GOLQ128). I thought that would be easier than this one, but I was wrong. Eighteen teams out of 38 got 300 points or more, compared with fifteen in GOLQ128. Thanks to everyone for their entries and comments! -- T P Uschanov ______________________________________________________________________ There is a "+" after Score below for each tie-breaker answered correctly; a "-" indicates partial credit. A million-selling single from the album "Beatles VI." Howard Teitelbaum: Recorded in 13 takes on 6 October 1964, with additional intro/outro edit pieces recorded on 18 October. In the U.K., released in December '64 as a track on the "Beatles for Sale" LP, as well as being on the "Beatles for Sale" EP released in April '65. In the U.S., it was released as a single in Feb '65 (b/w "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party"), and was also on the "Beatles VI" LP, released in June '65. Follow your lone beaten path Wander where you can't be grabbed Be aware of hidden dangers #02) The Beau Brummels: "Don't Talk to Strangers" (1965) [52] This isn't just rock 'n' roll It's a dance for young and old #03) The Beau-Marks: "Clap Your Hands" (1960) [45] It's something I think's worthwhile If the puppet makes you smile If not, then you're throwing stones Throwing stones, throwing stones #04) The Bee Gees: "Holiday" (1967) [16] Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday Friday night and day She used to tell me how she loved me But now I hear her say #05) Huelyn Duvall: "Little Boy Blue" (1959) [88] I'll meet you at the locker When school's dismissed I'll carry your books home with you Just give me one little ... #06) Johnny Ferguson: "Angela Jones" (1960) [27] The Coasters: Written by John D. Loudermilk. You broke my heart When you said goodbye But now the milk is spilt And you're gonna cry #07) Buddy Holly: "Early in the Morning" (1958) [32] Written by Bobby Darin, and recorded by him for Brunswick Records in anticipation of leaving Atco Records after a hitless spell; after "Splish Splash" became a surprise hit for him, Atco wouldn't let him go and Brunswick had to give the masters to them. Darin's version was released as by The Rinky Dinks, and Buddy Holly covered the song with the same musicians for Coral, Brunswick's sister label. Both versions made the pop chart. Tears, tears I shed a million tears for you Tears, tears And now you're loving someone new #08) The Knickerbockers: "Lies" (1965) [20] The EJs & Co.: Written by Buddy Randall and Beau Charles; produced by Jerry Fuller. The first and only Top 20 hit for the New Jersey rock band. One of these days he'll find a girl Who knows all about him She's gonna break his care-free heart And go on without him #09) Bob Kuban & The In-Men: "The Cheater" (1966) [12] The EJs & Co.: Written by John Mike Krenski; produced by Mel Friedman. The first and only Top 20 hit for the St. Louis pop-rock octet. Ed Toutant: This one is interesting because of the fate of one of the leaders of the In-Men -- it wasn't Bob himself, but lead singer Walter Scott. Scott disappeared several years ago and was presumed dead, but they didn't find the body. So his wife decides to get on with her life and marries a neighbor who lived down the street. Through a series of odd events and circumstances, the new husband came under suspicion for his first wife's death and then an investigator obtained a warrant to open up the septic tank buried in his yard and found the body of Scott. Scott's widow's second husband was convicted for the murder. This all happened in the St. Louis area and it was featured on a documentary show called Autopsy that runs occasionally on HBO. So the guy who warned millions about "The Cheater" should have heeded his own advice. So if you've got someone whose love is true Let it shine for you #10) Gary Lewis & The Playboys: "This Diamond Ring" (1965) [1] The EJs & Co.: Music and lyrics by Al Kooper, Irwin Levine and Bob Brass; arranged by Leon Russell and produced by Snuff Garrett. Garrett was the neighbor of Gary Lewis' father Jerry. The song, which Bobby Vee had turned down, became the first hit and only million seller for the Los Angeles quintet. Howard Teitelbaum: Originally recorded by Sammy Ambrose, whose version only bubbled under (at #117) for 1 week. Tell me how long will it take before you finally realize That the carnival is over and you've seen much better days You have wasted too much time in too many different plays You denied the possibility of growing old You are filled with false humility or much too bold #11) The McCoys: "Beat the Clock" (1967) [92] The first McCoys song in the history of the GOLQ -- perhaps because their biggest hits ("Hang On Sloopy", "Come On Let's Go") were covers and have unsuitable lyrics. Now do what you want The way you want, it's all up to you For the only rule Is just to do what you wanna do #12) The Merry-Go-Round: "Live" (1967) [63] When I'm feeling blue, all I have to do Is take a look at you, then I'm not so blue When I'm in your arms, nothing seems to matter If the world should shatter, I don't care #13) The Mindbenders: "A Groovy Kind of Love" (1966) [2] The EJs & Co.: The last Top 10 song for the rock group from Manchester, England. The 1988 remake by Phil Collins was a #1 hit and a million-seller. You'll see the people from your block And don't be shocked If you see your favorite star #14) The Miracles: "Going to a Go-Go" (1965) [11] Leo the monkey told the lion one day A bad little fellow comin' down your way You talk about your family, it's a cryin' shame Your mama's workin' on the chain gang #15) Mickey Murray: "Shout Bamalama" (1967) [54] The Gypsy's Caravan: Written by Otis Redding. I should tell you just how I feel And I keep try-y-yin' But something holds me back when I try to tell you #16) People: "I Love You" (1968) [14] Sean Anglum: Written by Zombie member Chris White and originally recorded by the Zombies. Most people got soul if they wanna try Let love be your goal and let it fly #17) The Rascals: "A Ray of Hope" (1968) [24] Well, I'm sorry, girl, but I can't stay Feeling like I do today It's too much pain and too much sorrow Guess I'll feel the same tomorrow #18) The Rolling Stones: "The Last Time" (1965) [9] The EJs & Co.: Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham. As you might know, Oldham is currently engaged in a court case against contemporary band The Verve, who used a sample of Oldham's own orchestral recording of the song in their "Bitter Sweet Symphony". I've tried so hard to show you how I care Every chance I've had, oh yeah How blind can you be, why can't you see That I love you, I need you, I want you so bad #19) The Shirelles: "Maybe Tonight" (1964) [88] Written by Van McCoy. Despite the low chart placing, this is one of their best records. Here I stand, head in hand Turn my face to the wall If he's gone I can't go on Feeling two foot small #20) The Silkie: "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" (1965) [10] Jessica Raine: "The Beatle Years", which is a show that broadcasts on our local classic rock station, played this song as part of a Brian Epstein tribute show. The EJs & Co.: From The Beatles' movie "Help." This was the only charting hit for the folk quartet from England, with accompaniment and production assistance from The Beatles. Howard Teitelbaum: A Lennon/McCartney composition (really, just Lennon, at his most Dylan-esque), first recorded by The Beatles for the "Help!" movie and LP. The Beatles provided musical backing/production for this version. I don't need a whole lots of money I don't need a big fine car I got everything that a man could want I got more than I could ask for Now, I don't have to run around I don't have to stay out all night 'Cause I got me a sweet, a sweet lovin' woman And she knows just how to treat me right #21) Soul Brothers Six: "Some Kind of Wonderful" (1967) [91] The EJs & Co.: The only charting single for the sextet from Rochester, New York. Also recorded by The Fantastic Johnny C (1968) and Grand Funk (1974). How well I remember The look was in his eyes Stealin' kisses from me on the sly Takin' time to make time Tellin' me that he's all mine Learnin' from each other's knowin' Look at us here, how much we've grown #22) Dusty Springfield: "Son-of-a-Preacher Man" (1968) [10] The EJs & Co.: From the album "Dusty In Memphis." Howard Teitelbaum: We lost this wonderful artist a few weeks ago. My earliest memory of rock music on the radio, at age 6, was hearing her "Wishin' and Hopin'." We walked hand in hand from the pond Playing in the middle of the city Down the street we walked westerly Wind breezing through her hair pretty #23) The Turtles: "Love in the City" (1969) [91] From the "Turtle Soup" album, which was produced by Ray Davies of The Kinks. My favourite Turtles song perhaps apart from "Outside Chance". You say that you're at home when you phone me And how much you really care Though you keep telling me that you're lonely I'll know if someone is there #24) Bobby Vee: "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" (1962) [3] Jamie Lubin: With The Johnny Mann Singers. Once she kissed me sweet and true Just the way she's kissing you Go on, laugh, a fool must learn Step right up and take your turn #25) Jimmy Witherspoon: "You're Next" (1965) [98] There were several guesses of Bobby Vinton, Andy Williams, etc. It's puzzling how famous blues belter Witherspoon got his only pop chart success with a soapy ballad like this. Tie-Breakers: Sometimes I feel I've got to Run away, I've got to Get away From the pain you drive into the heart of me The love we share Seems to go nowhere And I've lost my light For I toss and turn, I can't sleep at night #T1) Gloria Jones: "Tainted Love" (1964) [-] The EJs & Co.: The 1982 remake by "one-hit wonder" Soft Cell peaked at #8 on the Pop chart. Howard Teitelbaum: A great song, unfortunately "tainted" by the awful-but-successful cover by Soft Cell in 1982. (Well, I like their version. And it was a popular answer, but did not fit either alphabetically or in the time frame. And in this quiz tie-breakers really counted, as you can see from the results.) See them at dawn, they're going home He's driving fast, she's laughing See them at lunch and life's a bore Both sip their drinks, both dress so sharp In all the latest fashions But she is rich and he is poor #T2) Manfred Mann: "She Needs Company" (1966) [-] In Britain only an EP cut, but in the States put out as a single preceding "Pretty Flamingo". This is at least as good a song (written by vocalist Paul Jones), but was not a success. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This chart ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized. The second number on the line denotes the avg. no. of points scored on that song (total points divided by number of entrants, to 1 decimal place). For comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale. Rank Avg.
