The theme connecting the 27 songs -- which was, of course, Things Worn -- was apparently a bigger help to many teams than I ever expected, since seven teams had a perfect score, and only 22% of teams got 300 points or less (down from 41% in my previous quiz, GOLQ158). Thanks to all the entrants, and congratulations to the joint winners! -- T P Uschanov ______________________________________________________________________ There is a "+" after Score below for each tie-breaker answered correctly; a "-" indicates partial credit. A wigglin' walk And a gigglin' talk Makes the world go round #02) The Big Bopper: "Chantilly Lace" (1958) [6] {3} Four teams suggested that the first two lines should be "A wiggle in her walk / and a giggle in her talk." That's what I actually had in a preliminary version, but one of the persons among which it circulated suggested this rendering. And since that person is a native speaker and I'm not, I used it! A year ago we were one Now just look at what we've done! #03) Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans: "Why Do Lovers Break Each Other's Heart?" (1963) [38] {-} He had a hopped-up cycle that took off like a gun That fool was the terror of Highway 101 #04) The Cheers: "Black Denim Trousers" (1955) [6] {-} All the girls are jealous of him That's not really hard to see They would never try to love him His love belongs to me #05) The Chiffons: "A Love So Fine" (1963) [40] {n/c} There's no need to be fancy No one there will stare Dress in all the things you usually do There's no need to care #06) The Dave Clark Five: "At the Scene" (1966) [18] {-} Bet your bottom dollar You and I are through #07) Connie Francis: "Lipstick on Your Collar" (1959) [5] {10} Well, she cracked up over the solid fit Walkin' down the street with her brand new kit #08) Bobby Freeman: "Betty Lou Got a New Pair of Shoes" (1958) [37] {20} Covered by Neil Young on "Everybody's Rockin'," his controversial 1983 oldies album. Now she's afraid to come out of the water And I wonder what she's gonna do Now she's afraid to come out of the water And the poor little girl's turnin' blue #09) Brian Hyland: "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini" (1960) [1] {10} Everything went like I planned it I really put on quite a show In my heart I felt I could stand it 'Til you walked with your grip through the door #10) Burl Ives: "A Little Bitty Tear" (1961) [9] {-} For those couple of teams who wondered what this had to do with the theme, "grip" = "suitcase" (at least according to Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary). You may not wear such pretty clothes But when you're in my arms, you love like a rose What do I care if I see a broken chair? Why do I need the best kind of silverware? #11) Jay & The Americans: "Why Can't You Bring Me Home" (1966) [63] {-} They seek him here, they seek him there In Regent Street and Leicester Square #12) The Kinks: "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" (1966) [36] {-} John and Mitchy were gettin' kinda itchy Just to leave the folk music behind Zal and Denny workin' for a penny Tryin' to get a fish on the line In a coffee house Sebastian sat And after every number they passed the hat #13) The Mamas & The Papas: "Creeque Alley" (1967) [5] {-} We danced away the night Until the morning light Said "Time to go" I knew we'd have to part Such sadness filled my heart I loved her so #14) Gene McDaniels with The Johnny Mann Singers: "Spanish Lace" (1962) [31] {-} The flip side of this single, "Somebody's Waiting," was Randy Newman's first recorded composition. Though it hurts and my body aches From the pain it takes just to set things right But for now I must be content With each moment spent in her arms each night #15) Gene Pitney: "Princess in Rags" (1965) [37] {-} I was sitting on a beach just getting a tan When my buddy came up to me He said "You won't believe what's going on But it's something you gotta see" #16) The Rip Chords: "One-Piece Topless Bathing Suit" (1964) [96] {n/c} In-A-Prodig-Y-Vida: Written by P. F. Sloan, who also wrote "Eve of Destruction" (Barry McGuire #1), "Secret Agent Man" (Johnny Rivers) and "Where Were You When I Needed You" (The Grass Roots). I'm told that these are the lyrics to the single version; the quiz had slightly different ones. (1961) [77] {-} How this fairly terrible Scottish novelty record ever was a hit in the U.S. is a mystery to me.
