Close behind were Michael Gessner's team, Randy Price (high solo entrant), The Gypsy's Caravan, Jamie Lubin, Delphi Trivia Club, Freddy Letrange, and Barry Silk's team. The mean score for this quiz was 347.1; the median was 375. No one identified #T2. This quiz's major theme, "2001: A Place Odyssey," was a far-from-subtle indication that the lyrics, artists' names, and song titles contain many spelled-out names (whether coincidental or not) of actual world (though mostly U.S.) cities of population over 50,000. Did you find the 23 such city names? [Note: Although more than one city named "Springfield" has a population over 50,000, I only count "Springfield" in #03's title as one city name. I do, however, count "York" (England), which rests well-hidden inside yet another city. By the way, anyone who looked at #25's lyrics "... think it's very nice" and found "Nice" (France) has (as I do) too much time on their hands - it's not capitalized, so don't count it.] There were, of course, a few other types of localities referred to throughout the quiz - Sunset Beach, Morocco, Dixie, Tennessee, heaven(!), etc. - but the main focus was city names. This major theme might just as well have been described by the song title of #15. The quiz also contains a rather simple minor theme, which involves the terms "buffalo", "birds", "horses", "pigs", and others. This category - for the still dazed amongst you - is further hinted at by the group name in #04. While the major theme was essentially given, only Freddy Letrange picked out the minor theme. Check out the solution to The Puzzler and the names of those entrants who solved it in the section following the main quiz. My thanks to everyone who participated. (1963,1974) [3] {20} This song was re-issued in 1974, with writing credit going to Chuck Berry. The song's tune is taken directly from Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen." They're really rockin' in Boston! #02) Berry, Chuck: "Sweet Little Sixteen" (1958) [2] {1} An unabashed lyrics reference to my GOLQ team! "Sweet Little Sixteen" and "Surfin' U.S.A. also appeared together way back in GOLQ002! Their coexistence brings up the issue of the GOLQ Song Re-Use rule: Are these actually the same song, thereby precluding their use on the same quiz (or even within 50 quizzes of one another)? While the latter song clearly employs the former's tune, its lyrics are quite different; that, in my mind, makes the songs sufficiently different to be fair game here. Freddy Letrange: This song is the reason Chuck Berry and his current and former publishers collect 100% - while Brian Wilson collects 0% - of BMI royalties for song #01. 'Neath the shadow of her soothing hand I am free there just to make my plans Dream of faraway lands #03) Buffalo Springfield, The: "Rock 'N' Roll Woman" (1967) [44] {-} Written by Stephen Stills, who is one of but a few people in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame more than once (The Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash). Crosby (The Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash) is another. Eric Clapton, by the way, became the Hall of Fame's first triple inductee last March when honored as a solo performer (in addition to his previous entries with The Yardbirds and Cream). Save up all your bread and fly TransLove Airways to San Francisco, U.S.A. #04) Burdon, Eric, & the Animals: "San Franciscan Nights" (1967) [9] {-} These lyrics are part of the song's spoken intro. Perhaps they come from the phrase "Fly TransLove Airways, gets you there on time," which repeats in Donovan's 1966 song about getting high, "Fat Angel." I am so afraid of dying Before I dry the tears she's crying Before I watch your sea birds flying in the sun #05) Campbell, Glen: "Galveston" (1969) [4] {-} Singer/guitarist Campbell was a studio musician for many groups, including The Beach Boys. His TV show lasted 1968-1972, and he even acted in movies. But he will mostly be remembered for his string of hits on the Country and Adult Contemporary charts, a string which began in 1962 and lasted over 30 years. Even at the rodeo They came on horses #06) Church, Eugene, and the Fellows: "Pretty Girls Everywhere" (1958/59) [36] {6} Eugene and Jesse Belvin recorded "The Girl In My Dreams" in 1956 as The Cliques. Looking at the world through the sunset in your eyes Traveling the train through clear Moroccan skies Ducks and pigs and chickens call Animal carpet wall to wall American ladies five foot tall in blue #07) Crosby, Stills & Nash: "Marrakesh Express" (1969) [28] {-} Written by ex-Hollies member Graham Nash. I used to go with glamour girls Who wore silks day and night #08) Darin, Bobby: "Plain Jane" (1959) [38] {-} A re-working of the century-old song "Buffalo Gals (Won't You Come Out Tonight)." Darin was successful at redoing old hits in his own style, e.g., "Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey," "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now," and "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby," #1 hits in 1902, 1909, and 1938 respectively. Jamie Lubin: Written by Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman. One chair's for The Queen Dinah Washington, her name And singing soul was her fame #09) Dixie Drifter, The: "Soul Heaven" (1965) [99] {8} A spoken tribute to soul royalty Nat "King" Cole, queen Dinah Washington, and crown prince Sam Cooke, who had all died within the preceding two years. My love is real, and it's so, so strong I'll be loving you from, from now on #10) Domino, Fats: "Tell Me That You Love Me" (1960) [51] {-} One of The Fat Man's more than 60 top-100 hits. He has sold over 60 million records worldwide. One little word One little smile One little kiss Won't you try? #11) Francis, Connie: "I'm Sorry I Made You Cry" (1958) [36] {-} Like Bobby Darin, Connie was not loath to redoing old songs. This follow-up single to "Who's Sorry Now" (itself a hit in 1923) was a #1 single in 1918. Georgia to Duluth Everyone is playing #12) Gibbs, Georgia: "The Hula Hoop Song" (1958) [32] {-} Teresa Brewer had a top-40 hit at the same time with this song, which recounts the universal appeal of the 50s hoop-spinning craze. Gibbs, a former radio show singer, had her biggest hits with "Kiss Of Fire," #1 for 7 weeks in 1952, "Tweedle Dee," #2 in 1955, and "Dance With Me Henry (Wallflower)," #1 for 3 weeks in 1955. By the time I make Albuquerque she'll be workin' #13) Hayes, Isaac: "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" (1969) [37] {37} The flip side of his first single, "Walk On By"; both are covers. On her decks were guns as big as steers And shells as big as trees #14) Horton, Johnny: "Sink The Bismarck" (1960) [3] {-} A tale of the British navy's hunt to sink the famous German warship. Those bad looking guys with the moppy long hair The Rolling Stones from Liverpool have got to be there #15) Jan & Dean: "(Here They Come) From All Over The World" (1965) [56] {-} The theme song from the film of "The T.A.M.I. Show" concert in Santa Monica. Jan & Dean were popular at the time, available, and lived nearby, so were chosen to host the show. The song was originally recorded as "Music City," but its lyrics were changed to match the concert. Alas, the Stones were from London, not Liverpool ... but hey, close enough for American audiences. Paris nights are warm and fair The summer winds are soft A young man finds the face of love In every field and loft #16) Kingston Trio, The: "Raspberries, Strawberries" (1959) [70] {-} The group's follow-up to their first (and only #1) single, "Tom Dooley." For I still love you in the same old way And I'm losin' you a little more every day #17) Lee, Brenda: "My Whole World Is Falling Down" (1963) [24] {-} The tune's refrain is taken from the ditty "London Bridge Is Falling Down." Remember, I remember all that you said Told me love was too plebeian Told me you were through with me and Now you say you love me #18) London, Julie: "Cry Me A River" (1955/56) [9] {-} This song was covered by Joe Cocker (#11) in 1970. And they can pick more notes than the number of ants on a Tennessee ant hill #19) Lovin' Spoonful, The: "Nashville Cats" (1967/68) [8] {-} The group's first 7 singles (this was the 7th) all made the top-10. Team Asia: A parody of this song, about a deli, was called "Noshville Katz." What can I do? And I can never, never, never go home again #20) Pitney, Gene: "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa" (1963) [17] {-} A Bacharach-David composition. Jessica Raine: Covered (pretty well) by Ian and Sylvia; also sung badly in the film "The Commitments." She said, "Thank the Lord" And every day I thank you, Lord For all the stars and all the seasons And all the birds and all the bees #21) Rascals, The: "Heaven" (1969) [39] {-} Written by group organist Felix Cavaliere. The series followed the exploits of British secret agent John Drake, played by Patrick McGoohan; Drake worked for M9 (a fictional branch of Her Majesty's Secret Service). The song was written by P.F. Sloan. Wicked, wicked, cruel, cruel world What have you done to me? #23) Seville, David, The Music of: "The Bird On My Head" (1958) [34] {-} His pre-chipmunk follow-up to "Witch Doctor." The outlandish Jalacy J. Hawkins died last February at age 70. Another Hawkins recording of this song uses the lyrics: Is someone dead Or have I lost my head? Is it Screamin' Jay's bed? It's Armpit No. 6! The Gypsy's Caravan: With Little James, on the Red Top label. And then you left me With a broken heart But I still love you Please say you love me, sweetheart I love you, dear, I miss you, dear, and I need you So please come back and say you need me, too Without your love my heart would break You know I love you Without your love my heart would break #T2) Spaniels, The: "You Painted Pictures" (1955) [-] {13} Doo-wop group with lead vocalist James "Pookie" Hudson.
