This deprived many long-time entrants from claiming their first GOLQ victory. The other nine, all of whom missed the same songs, were: THE DELPHI TRIVIA CLUB GENATEAM FREDDY LETRANGE EJs and CO. 8-TRACK MINDS JOANNE P ANDREW E ANTONIO TORRALBA, DOMINIC BEGG, BEN ROWDEN and TUNDE MIKE GESSNER, JOEL LIPMAN, DAN DINARDO While the average score was a relatively low 350, the median score was a lofty 410. The feeling goes around and a-upside down Instead of whoop, do-do-do-do The feeling goes around and a-upside down Instead of whoop, do-do-do-do The feeling goes around and a-upside down Instead of whoop, do-do-do-do #03) Bobbettes: "Have Mercy Baby" (1960)[66]{-} Nobody recognized the chorus to this song, which was later covered by James Brown. Say your prayers before you go to bed Make sure you get yourself to school on time #04) Cher: "You Better Sit Down Kids" (1967)[9]{-} Cher didn't change the lyrics from the male point of view they were written for. Everyone will want to shake your hand Everyone will want to see you again And they'll all pat you on your back They'll all try to tell you that they're glad you're back #05) Dee Clark: "Your Friends" (1961)[34]{30} A minor chart hit for Dee. I remember seeing him do this on American Bandstand. I have counted all your lies, all your alibis I'm a guy believes just what he hears And at na, na, na, na, na, na, late at night Na, na, na, na, na, na, late at night #06) Drifters: "I Count The Tears" (1960)[17]{6} Fish all day sleep all night Father never lets her out of his sight Soon I'm gonna have to get my knife and cut that rope #07) Every Mothers' Son: "Come On Down To My Boat" (1967)[6]{-} Went to the drugstore, nearly lost my life there I saw my little girlfriends, one and two Standing there together, I knew I was in trouble But I'm a clever fella, I know what to do #08) Four Preps: "Down By The Station" (1959)[13]{-} Nobody loves me, everybody hates me Yeh-yeh-yeh-yeh-yeh Gee I feel so low, I just think I'll go Out in the yard and eat worms #09) The Hearts: "Dear Abby" (1963)[94]{-} This got minor airplay in Boston, but so did every other obscure girl group song, or so it seemed. You rushed in blindly, he treated you kindly Until he found out what he could get from you You should have departed, before he got started Now you've been burned just like I said you would #10) Hollies: "Dear Eloise" (1967)[50]{-} And here comes pride up the backstretch Heartaches are going to the inside My tears are holding back They're trying not to fall My heart's out of the running #11) Jack Jones: "The Race Is On" (1965)[15]{-} Or George. I just want to tell you How good you make me feel And if you've got a lifetime to spare Baby, I will #12) Andy Kim: "So Good Together" (1969)[36]{-} The same team (with Jeff Barry) who brought you "Sugar, Sugar". I called her yesterday, it should have been tomorrow I could not keep the joy that was inside I begged for her to tell me if she really loved me Somewhere a mountain is moving Afraid it's moving without me #13) Left Banke: "Pretty Ballerina" (1967)[15]{-} Sit down, bad news Yeh, the coffee's still hot You dog I'm gonna take good care of you #14) Jim Lowe: "Talkin' To The Blues" (1957)[15]{-} The "You dog" bit was used in a beer commercial for a while a year or so ago. Write me a letter soon And I'll be homeward bound I joined the Navy to see the world But nowhere could I find #15) Vince Martin with the Tarriers: "Cindy, Oh Cindy" (1956)[9]{-} Get away from my door I heard about the lovers you had before You took their love for a game of joy (oh, yeah) And tossed their hearts around as though it was a toy #16) Marvelettes: "Playboy" (1962)[7]{4} Now I declare my love is there, for you are just my speed I won't behave 'til I know you crave my lovin', yes indeed #17) Sal Mineo: "Start Movin' (In My Direction)" (1957)[9]{-} Sal's life turned weird, and it ended with his murder in the late 70s. Strangely, there was a book review of a new biography of Sal in the Boston paper today. I hadn't seen Jim in years, he'd been reported dead Though Jim was my true love, I soon would marry Fred The wedding march was beginning, when Jim appeared that day With a cry I ran to him, but they all heard Jim say #18) Patti Page: "Go On With The Wedding" (1956)[11]{-} When I first met her she was only three And I remember how she followed me She was always getting in my way And I still, yes, I still can hear her say #19) Playmates: "Wait For Me" (1960)[37]{-} One of their album covers shows this somewhat obese trio all sitting on the same motor-bike. Not a pretty picture. Don't pity me, 'cause I'm feeling blue Don't be ashamed, it might have been you Oh-oh-oh-oh oh love, kiss me one time, then go love I understand #20) Marty Robbins: "Don't Worry" (1961)[3]{-} Great fuzz-bass solo that was ahead of its time. All the kids in town will know They will know you hurt me so Did you have to tell them all That I still love you #21) Royal Teens: "Believe Me" (1959)[26]{-} Unusual for a group who's first hit was a novelty to later come up with a great song. A young Al Kooper plays the piano on this. I'm living, yet I'm dying, staring out at Music City from my cab Two young soldiers from Ft. Campbell Told me how they hate that war in Vietnam Sirens echo through an alley, And some woman said some fellow stabbed a man I rushed Miss Teenage to a doctor, She begged to give the child my name I've lost count of cups of coffee that I've had #22) John Wesley Ryles I: "Kay" (1968)[83]{-} Years before Harry came out with "Taxi", John sang this cab driver's slice of life lament. Funny how my memory skips While looking over manuscripts Of unpublished rhyme #23) Simon & Garfunkel: "A Hazy Shade Of Winter" (1966)[13]{-} In the midnight, moonlight hour I keep walking the long and lonely mile And every time I do I keep seeing this picture of you #24) Tremeloes: "Here Comes My Baby" (1967)[13]{-} Written by Cat Stevens. Our real old man, he got killed in the war And she knows she and seven kids couldn't of gotten very far She said she thought that she could never love again And then there he stood with that big wide grin #25) Winstons: "Color Him Father" (1969)[7]{2} 1969 Grammy winner for best R&B song. ----------------------- T I E - B R E A K E R S ----------------------- She met me at the station 'cause I'm coming home on my leave I let her use my XKE 'cause she could drive around and think of me Baby I'm home, you look surprised, it's written on your face Where's the old crowd, do they still hang out at the pizza place A flash of suspicion, you learned a new way of kissin' Watch your steps there, Jane, he'll catch you yet, Sarah Jane #T1) Lou Christie: "If My Car Could Only Talk" (1966)[118]{-} Produced by Jack Nitzsche, this song was perhaps a bit too progressive for AM radio at the time. It does capture all of the elements that Lou liked to use in his songs. One of the many songs he co-wrote with Twyla Herbert. I can see you in the morning time Washing clothes, the weather's fine Hanging things upon the line as your life slips away So you finally named a day, when wedding bells will chime I was sorry to hear you say, you're gonna be his, not mine So you think you will be happy, taking doggy for a walk? #T2) Manfred Mann: "Semi-Detached Suburban Mr. James" (1966)[-]{-} Manfred Mann had a lot of great 45s that never made it to this side of the ocean. ============================================================================== This chart ranks the songs/artists from most recognized to least recognized.
