They edged out REALLY ROCKIN' IN BOSTON by a partial credit tie-breaker for the win. This was a high scoring quiz, with over two-thirds of the entrants scoring over 400. GOLQ178 was an experimental quiz, using audio snippets of songs rather than written lyrics. The reason that I wanted to try this quiz format was to eliminate (or try to minimize) identifying songs by web searching. It has become apparent to many GOLQ authors (and participants) that the lyrics for a large majority of 1950s/60s songs can be easily found on the web with search engines. Using search engines essentially defeats the purpose and intent of the GOLQs... to test 'musical knowledge'. (Or at least test one's ability to identify songs using one's own resources). Using audio snippets with little or no lyrics attempts to level the playing field for those participants who do not rely on search engines to identify songs. I received many replies to my request for feedback on using audio. The overwhelming majority of the comments I received supported this new audio format! Many of the comments not only praised the format, but wanted the audio quizzes to continue. There were, however, two negative replies and one neutral reply. One regular GOLQ participant decided not to submit an entry claiming that the time to download and listen to the songs was too long. Similarly, the other negative reply commented that the quiz was not portable, like the written lyrics quizzes. Also, the number of GOLQ178 entrants was below average, which may indicate there were others who may not like this format. All in all, I would say that this audio quiz was an overall success based on the feedback I received. So, at the discretion of the GOLQ author, this format will probably be used again periodically as an alternative to written lyrics quizzes. I'd like to thank everyone who participated and also thank those who provided feedback to me! Hope you enjoyed it! -- Barry Silk (oldiesFan@hotmail.com) _____________________________________________________________________________ Replace all occurrences of '&' in all e-mail addresses with '@'. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tie Breaker Scoring Key + after numeric score below indicates a tie-breaker answered correctly. - indicates partial credit. x indicates a totally incorrect guess. . indicates no guess. # on Pos Score ID Name and E-mail address team Age(s) ---+-----+--+-----------------------------------------------------+---+------ 1 500+- LB Tom Adams, David Bailey, <baileyl&spot.colorado.edu> ~10 ? Since the snippet included lyrics specific only to the Philadelphia version, using the generic title did not qualify for full credit... especially since my high school (i.e., Northeast) was included :-) There were 28 different versions of "High School USA" released on the Atlantic label.
