From: Rick Schubert <golq@san.rr.com>

RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #181 (GOLQ181)

Congratulations to The Village Idiots on a near-perfect entry on an apparently
difficult quiz, and to the Delphi Trivia Club with a close second. Excellent
scores were also turned in by the team of Barry Silk, Jenny McCaw, and
Joe Haertel; The Gyspy's Caravan; and Really Rockin' In Boston. The mean score
of the quiz was about 274, and the median was 252. These numbers are the
lowest for the 15 GOLQs for which I could find such statistics reported.
The quiz turned out to be more difficult than I had expected.

Our thanks to everyone who participated. GOLQ182 should be posted fairly soon.

As a special feature, Norm has created full-length mp3s of 14 of the most
obscure songs from this quiz. These files are available on the web site where
the original clips were, and I have provided links to these files in these
results. The files are approximately 1.1 MB each. The original clips are
still there except that the mp3 versions of the clips for those 14 files have
been replaced by the full-length versions.

Rick Schubert <golq@san.rr.com> and Norm Katuna.

                    Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz  #181
               Songs #01-25 were from 1955 through 1968
======================================================================
http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-01.mp3
#01)  Ad Libs, The: "The Boy From New York City" (1965) [8] {6}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-02.mp3
#02)  Beatles, The: "A Hard Day's Night" (1964) [1] {n/c}

"I can name that song in one note" (or chord). Everybody got this song.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-03.mp3
#03)  Bee Gees, The: "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" (1968) [8] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-04.mp3
#04)  Cannon, Freddie: "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans" (1959/60) [3] {14}

His first name was listed as "Freddie" on this one and 2 of his other
charted songs but as "Freddy" on his other 20 charted songs.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-05.mp3
#05)  Coasters, The: "Poison Ivy" (1959) [7] {1}

Another song that all teams got.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-06.mp3
#06)  Dale, Dick, & The Del-Tones: "The Scavenger" (1963) [98] {-}

This song actually is a vocal, although no vocal were included in the clip.
Including vocals in the clip would probably have thrown people off even more.
Four teams guess "Stick Shift" by the Duals, while 2 teams guessed
"Leader Of The Laundromat."

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-07.mp3
#07)  Duprees, The, featuring Joey Vann: "Have You Heard" (1963/64) [18] {n/c}

I deducted 1 point for omitting "featuring Joey Vann." Whitburn has listed
them this way on this song in his last 3 editions (1993, 1996, and 1999).

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-08.mp3
#08)  Grammer, Billy: "Gotta Travel On" (1958/59) [4] {14}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-09.mp3
#09)  Haley, Bill, And His Comets: "Rock-A-Beatin' Boogie" (1955/56) [23] {-}

Five teams recognized the distinctive sounds of Bill Haley And His Comets on
this one without being able to come up with the correct artist. I imagine
most of the teams that did identify the song had to hunt through their
collections to find the match.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-10.mp3
#10)  Hollies, The: "King Midas In Reverse" (1967) [51] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-11.mp3
#11)  Ingmann, Jorgen, & His Guitar: "Apache" (1961) [2] {9}

Two point deduction for omitting Jorgen's guitar credit.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-12.mp3
#12)  Jan & Dean: "Gee" (1960) [81] {-}

Probably few of the many entrants who identified this song (or at least the
artist) had ever heard Jan & Dean's version before. Most either recognized
the song from the original (1954) version by the Crows and/or recognized
the semi-distinctive sound of Jan & Dean.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-13.mp3
#13)  Lauren, Rod: "If I Had A Girl" (1959) [31] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-14.mp3
#14)  Mann, Gloria: "Earth Angel Will You Be Mine" (1955) [18] {-}

This song was apparently more difficult than I had expected. I had thought
more teams would have recognized this song from the original (1954) by the
Penguins.

For those who are interested in such trivia: Whitburn used to list the title
of this as "Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)." Starting in his 1996 edition,
he started listing it as "Earth Angel Will You Be Mine," with the
"Will You Be Mine" part in a smaller font, which is how it appears on the
actual record label (actually, on the label the "Will You Be Mine" is
below "Earth Angel"). Apparently Whitburn used to use the parentheses
notation to indicate a subtitle, even when the label didn't use parentheses
(although some records do have parentheses in their subtitles, and Whitburn
has retained these). No points deducted for including the parentheses.
The Village Idiots actually submitted their answer to this song showing
"Will You Be Mine" in a smaller font (I would do the same in these results
if I were not posting them in straight text format).

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-15.mp3
#15)  McPhatter, Clyde: "Just to Hold My Hand" (1957) [26] {6}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-16.mp3
#16)  Miller, Chuck: "The House Of Blue Lights" (1955) [9] {-}

Four teams guessed Jerry Lee Lewis on this one, including 2 teams who guessed
"Whole Lot Of Shakin' Going On."

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-17.mp3
#17)  Music Machine, The: "Talk Talk" (1966/67) [15] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-18.mp3
#18)  Peter and Gordon: "Sunday for Tea" (1967) [31] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-19.mp3
#19)  Piltdown Men, The: "Brontosaurus Stomp" (1960) [75] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-20.mp3
#20)  Reed, Jimmy: "Close Together" (1961) [68] {12}

As with #09, the artist was distinctive. Recordings of this song are harder
to come by, and only half the teams that recognized Jimmy Reed were able
to identify the song.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-21.mp3
#21)  Robbins, Marty: "The Story of My Life" (1957/58) [15] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-22.mp3
#22)  Sonny: "The Revolution Kind" (1965) [70] {-}

One of two songs that Sonny charted without Cher. I gave 5 points to the
3 teams who guessed Sonny & Cher as the artist.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-23.mp3
#23)  Viscounts, The: "Night Train" (1960) [82] {-}

This was the hardest song, other than #T1. This is the same song as done by
Jimmy Forrest, Buddy Morrow, James Brown, and many others, although I
think the intro by the Viscounts, which was used in this clip, is not in
the other versions, at least not the more well-known ones.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-24.mp3
#24)  Ward, Billy, and His Dominoes: "Jennie Lee" (1958) [55] {-}

Another song identified by many teams based on their knowledge of a more
well-known version (by Jan & Arnie) but probably heard previously by few
teams (except perhaps those who have picked up mp3s of this on the
Internet). This was an unusual song for this group to cover, and apparently
the R&B market didn't fall for it.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-25.mp3
#25)  Young Rascals, The: "You Better Run" (1966) [20] {-}

------------
Tie-breakers:
------------

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-T1.mp3
#T1)  Four Lovers, The: "Happy Am I" (1956) [-] {-}

This is one of the few songs by this early incarnation of the Four Seasons
that did not have Frankie Valli on lead. I expected that this might be the
hardest song on the quiz. It was, as it was identified only by Barry Silk.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ181/GOLQ181-T2.mp3
#T2)  Small Faces: "Sha-La-La-La-Lee" (1966) [-] {-}

This song was identified by more teams (4) than I had expected, but, then,
this isn't my type of music, so I'm not a good judge. Coincidentally, an mp3
of this song was posted at least twice to the alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1960s
newsgroup during this quiz, but I don't think that any of the teams identified
it because of that.

Barry Silk said that the Ides of March also recorded this song.

=============================================================================

This chart ranks the songs/artists from most recognized to least recognized.
The 2nd number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that
song (total points divided by number of entrants, to 2 decimal places). For
comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale.
Note that since there were exactly 20 entrants on this quiz, each average
listed below also corresponds (in most cases) to the number of teams that
identified the particular song.
