RESULTS AND ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #189

Congratulations to The Village Idiots on an outstanding performance in
winning this quiz with a near-perfect entry (missing only the first
tie-breaker). Close behind were the duos of Barry Silk & Scooter Magruder
and Randy Price & Peter Morley, both of whom aced the charted songs but
did not get either tie-breaker, narrowly beating out The Delphi Trivia Club,
who identified the 25 charted songs and 1 tie-breaker but missed a few
points on an artist designation.

The average score on this quiz was 316.5, and the median was 306.

Bob Bluestein has already posted GOLQ190.

Thanks to all who entered!

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #189 ANSWERS:

Answers are in the form:
#number) Artist: "Title" (year[s]) [peak Pop] {peak R&B}

where "peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart
      "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-01.mp3
#01) Alice Wonder Land: "He's Mine (I Love Him, I Love Him, I Love Him)" (1963) [62] {-}

Norm says: One of my favorite girl-group records of the 60s. This song
was also done by the Swans on Swan and also spawned a gender-change
version by the Chants, where everything is the same except it's sung
from a male point of view where all the "He"s, are changed to "She"s and
the "I love him"s are changed to "I love her"s.
Ron Crandall also mentioned this version and said the Chants were a
Merseybeat group.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-02.mp3
#02) Animals: "Bring It On Home To Me" (1965) [32] {-}

L'Equipe: The old Sam Cooke hit

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-03.mp3
#03) Berry, Chuck: "Beautiful Delilah" (1958) [81] {-}

I was surprised more teams didn't recognize the artist on this clip. Only
the top 4 teams identified the song, and no one else identified the artist.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-04.mp3
#04) Cannon, Freddy: "Palisades Park" (1962) [3] {15}

Written by Chuck Barris.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-05.mp3
#05) Cheers: "Black Denim Trousers" (1955) [6] {-}

Matthew Aument: Written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller
L'Equipe: With orchestra and chorus of Les Baxter
Lori Bailey: Featuring Bert Convy!

Edith Piaf recorded a French version of this song!

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-06.mp3
#06) Dion: "This Little Girl" (1963) [21] {-}

Several teams misidentified this as "Love Came To Me," which was
also my first answer when Norm sent me the clip.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-07.mp3
#07) Fabares, Shelley: "Johnny Angel" (1962) [1] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-08.mp3
#08) Genies: "Who's That Knocking" (1959) [71] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-09.mp3
#09) Haley, Bill, and His Comets: "Forty Cups of Coffee" (1957) [70] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-10.mp3
#10) Impalas: "Sorry (I Ran All the Way Home)" (1959) [2] {14}

A few teams misidentified this as "Oh-Oh, I'm Falling In Love Again" by
Jimmie Rodgers, an easy mistake to make except that it doesn't come
close to fitting alphabetically. Another misidentification was
"Mule Skinner Blues" by The Fendermen, which also has a similarity to
the clip used.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-11.mp3
#11) Jefferson Airplane: "Ballad Of You & Me & Pooneil" (1967) [42] {-}

Nearly half the teams identified this, but most probably had to work
at it. The psychedelic sound was the clue.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-12.mp3
#12) Kalin Twins: "When" (1958) [5] {1}

L'Equipe: When they toured the UK in 1958, some kid was hired as an
opening act--by the time the tour was over, the Twins were history,
but the kid seemed to do OK--Sir Cliff will be 62 this month!

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-13.mp3
#13) Lewis, Bobby: "I'm Tossin' And Turnin' Again" (1962) [98] {-}

This was expected to be the hardest charted song on the quiz. We were
impressed that 4 teams identified it.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-14.mp3
#14) Marvelettes: "Please Mr. Postman" (1961) [1] {1}

L'Equipe: Four guys from Liverpool liked this song too !

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-15.mp3
#15) Nelson, Ricky: "A Teenager's Romance" (1957) [2] {-}

Two votes for "Please Send Me Someone To Love" by the Moonglows.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-16.mp3
#16) Orbison, Roy, and Teen Kings: "Ooby Dooby" (1956) [59] {-}

L'Equipe: from Roy's rockabilly days at Sun Records

Several teams missed 3 points for ignoring Roy's backing group.
No points were deducted for incorrectly inserting "The" before
"Teen Kings."

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-17.mp3
#17) Presley, Elvis: "I'm Yours" (1965) [11] {-}

We figured most teams would recognize the artist on this one, but we
didn't expect too many teams to identify the song. Instead, 17 out
of the 19 teams who identified the artist also got the title.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-18.mp3
#18) Ramrods: "(Ghost) Riders In The Sky" (1961) [30] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-19.mp3
#19) Sam & Dave: "Hold On! I'm A Comin'" (1966) [21] {1}

One point deduction for omitting "A" from the title.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-20.mp3
#20) Simon & Garfunkel: "Mrs. Robinson" (1968) [1] {-}

Matthew Aument: A #1 hit for them in 1968. Written by Paul Simon.
Joe DiMaggio threatened to sue him for writing the line,
"Joltin' Joe has left and gone away, hey, hey, hey."
Weezer recently did a cover of this song.

L'Equipe: From the movie "The Graduate"

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-21.mp3
#21) Supremes: "Where Did Our Love Go" (1964) [1] {n/c}

L'Equipe: Group's first single to chart at number one... there were
eleven others to follow suit.

Two teams answered "I Really Love You" by the Stereos for this one,
and I can hear why.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-22.mp3
#22) Turner, Spyder: "Stand By Me" (1966/67) [12] {3}

This song has Spyder Turner doing impressions of various artists singing
"Stand By Me" or their own songs. The clip is of his impression of
Chuck Jackson singing "Any Day Now (My Wild Beautiful Bird)." Although
I intentionally was being somewhat tricky on this one, I inserted a song
by The Supremes for #21 to try to prevent people from thinking that this
was Percy Sledge's version of "Any Day Now," but 3 teams submitted that
as their answer anyway (and 1 guessed it was Oscar Toney, Jr., who didn't
chart with his version of "Any Day Now").

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-23.mp3
#23) Wells, Mary: "Bye Bye Baby" (1961) [45] {8}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-24.mp3
#24) Yardbirds: "Ten Little Indians" (1967) [96] {-}

Really Rockin' In Boston: Written by Nilsson.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-25.mp3
#25) Yuro, Timi: "Make The World Go Away" (1963) [24] {-}

Tie-breakers:
------------

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-T1.mp3
#T1) Barbara & The Boys: "Hooty Sapperticker" (1958) [-] {-}

Norm says: From around July of 1958. A very popular record with KFWB
(Los Angeles) at the time. This was popular enough to have come out on
two labels, first on #1 Records and then a few weeks later Dot picked it
up and released it. A very catchy novelty type record that KFWB had a
contest with at the time. You would win a prize if they randomly called
your house and the phone was answered with "Hooty Sapperticker." This
record has even spawned at least one discussion over in
rec.music.dementia.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ189/GOLQ189-T2.mp3
#T2) Mason, Bonnie Jo: "Ringo, I Love You" (1964) [-] {-}

Norm says: Bonnie Jo is Cher, very early in her career. I think Sonny
was working as a gopher for Phil Spector in 1964 and he somehow got
Spector to record Cher under this alias for Spector's short-lived and
very valuable Annette record lable. This record is very valuable
because it's an obscure Beatle novelty record, a very obscure Phil
Spector item, and a very obscure and desirable Cher item. I posted this
once as an mp3 back in May of 1998.

This chart ranks the songs/artists from most recognized to least recognized.
The 2nd number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that
song (total points divided by number of entrants, to 2 decimal places). For
comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale.

COMMENTS:

The biggest surprises were that so many teams identified "I'm Yours"
and so few teams identified Chuck Berry. We were also somewhat surprised
that the entrants had as much difficulty as they did identifying
"Black Denim Trousers" (especially on some of the preliminary entries).
Other than that, the results were about what we expected.
