RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #213 (GOLQ213)

Congratulations to the team of Randy Price and Peter Morley, who took first
place in this quiz with a score of 490++. Tied for second were The EJ's &
Co. and The Village Idiots, while The Genateam had the only other score over
400. James White was the high solo entrant.

GOLQ213's mean score was a relatively low 304.

As stated in the quiz preface, there is "no letter "x" in any of the song
titles, artist names, or lyrics in this quiz." This was intended as a small
tip-off to the fact that recordings #01 through #25 are by artists whose
names begin with A through Z, excluding X.

Check out the solution to The Puzzler and the names of those entrants who
solved it in the section following the main quiz.

My thanks to all those who participated. Rick Schubert & Norm Katuna have
already posted GOLQ214 ...

And the hits just keep on coming!

Answers are in the form:
#number) Artist: Title (year[s]) [peak position on Pop chart] {peak R&B}

{F}   = made R&B chart as a flip side
{n/c} = no Billboard R&B chart published during this recording's period of
        peak popularity
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

And let me drink to a love I thought was mine
A love I thought was true to me
But now I'm drinking to a memory
#01) Anka, Paul: "A Steel Guitar And A Glass Of Wine" (1962) [13] {-}

     The Dutch Officials: With Ray Ellis and his Orchestra.

     Anka is still actively performing in casinos and community theaters
     in the U.S. and Canada.

Hold ya tight
Gotta need ya so
With all my might
I gotta squeeze ya
Hold ya tight
Because
I love ya so
#02) Brown, James: "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose" (1969) [15] {1}

(Say you love me)
Darling, say we'll never part
Your love for me, dear, stays in my heart
Tell me why-y-y-y should I make you sigh
#03) Charts, The: "Deserie" (1957) [88] {-}

Run your hand
Through your hair
Paint your face
With despair
That's your lot in life
#04) Donovan: "Lalena" (1968) [33] {-}

     "It's not very well known, but 'Lalena' is a composite title made up
     from the name of the German actress Lotte Lenya," said Donovan. "I was
     fascinated with 'The Threepenny Opera' as a socially conscious musical."
     The renowned Kurt Weill/Bertolt Brecht "opera for beggars" starred
     Weill's wife, Lenya, in the immortal role of the prostitute Jenny Diver
     (in fact, Bobby Darin and Louis Armstrong inserted Lenya's name into
     their classic versions of the musical's opening theme, "Mack The Knife").

The way you hug me
The way you squeeze me
The way you kiss me (smack!)
Yeh, yeh, yeh, yeh
Yeh, yeh, yeh, yeh, yeh
#05) Etta & Harvey: "If I Can't Have You" (1960) [52] {6}

You can open any door
#06) Four Aces, featuring Al Alberts: "Heart" (1955) [13] {-}

     Eddie Fisher also fits alphabetically.

     From the Broadway musical "Damn Yankees." This was my pre-playoffs
     attempt to spur the Red Sox on to a potential meeting with and defeat
     of the dreaded New York Yankees for the American League Championship
     and an eventual World Series victory. I take full credit for this
     surprisingly prescient inspiration's part in helping the Sox come back
     from a 3-games-to-none hole to defeat the Yanks in 7 games and finish
     off the mighty Cardinals in 4 straight. Just doing my job as a member
     of Red Sox Nation! (And no, the Four Aces are not Schilling, Martinez,
     Wakefield, and Lowe.)

Since I can't love you right, baby
I don't have to love you at all

Just because I don't do the dance they way they want me to
Can't they see that I'm in a different bag?
#09) Intruders, The: "Slow Drag" (1968) [54] {12}

Mom and papa told me, "Son, you'd better watch yourself"
If they knew about
#12) Little Richard: "Good Golly, Miss Molly" (1958) [10] {4}

     Richard Wayne Penniman was born and raised in Macon, Georgia, the third
     of twelve children, and began singing in his local church choir. He
     signed with RCA Records in 1951 after winning a talent contest and
     released two fairly unsuccessful singles. After returning to his job
     washing dishes in a Greyhound bus station, Richard sent a demo tape
     of "Tutti Fruitti" to Specialty Records, and the rest is rock 'n' roll
     history. By 1968, Little Richard had sold over 32 million records
     internationally. He was one of the first class of inductees into the
     Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1986) and received the Grammy Lifetime
     Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993.

What can I say now?
Being sorry's just not good enough

Folks were watching from the windows, everybody held their breath

And I want you to be mine
Rrrrrowww!

     Jimmy Webb, Don McLean, Cher, and others.

     Sean Anglum of Lori Bailey's team: There are many other versions,
     including ones by Joan Jett, Suzi Quatro, Heart, Juice Newton, and

PUZZLER SOLUTION
----------------

    Felicitations to those entrants who solved the Puzzler:
    Cole & Cole, The Coasters, The Dutch Officials, Delphi Trivia Club,
    The EJ'S & Co., Len Blanks, Randy Price and Peter Morley, Sanford Stein,
    Team Teitelbaum, and Will McCorry.

    The Mystery Quote, from Janis Joplin while on a long cross-country tour
    with Big Brother & the Holding Company:

                   "I'M SAVING THE DRUMMER FOR OMAHA."

    It turns out that the actual quote may be about saving the bass player
    rather than the drummer, but, hey, you get the idea!

Clue Quotes:

DAVID CROSBY: "I am having so much fun performing, I feel almost guilty.
I think, my God, I hope no one comes and busts me for this."

MAMA CASS ELLIOT: "Probably the biggest bringdown in my life ... was being
in a pop group and finding out just how much it was like everything it was
supposed to be against."

JIMI HENDRIX: "The only thing that bugs me is critics. It's like shooting
at a flying saucer as it tries to land, without giving the occupants a
chance to identify themselves."

BUDDY HOLLY: "If anyone asks you what kind of music you play, tell him
"pop." Don't tell him "rock 'n' roll" or they won't even let you in the
hotel."

KEITH MOON: "We don't do anything outrageous off-stage besides having the
occasional game of backgammon. We don't smash hotels ... we redecorate them."

COLONEL TOM PARKER: "When I first knew Elvis he had a million dollars'
worth of talent. Now he has a million dollars."

KEITH RICHARDS: "I never had a problem with drugs - only with cops."

GRACE SLICK: "I've enjoyed accommodations offered by police departments
from Florida to Hawaii. Any time I saw a badge, something in me would snap."

FRANK ZAPPA: "Most rock journalism is people who can't write interviewing
people who can't talk for people who can't read."

Additional Hints:

             (Cilla Black's big hit was "You're My World" in 1964)
