Across the Boarder and The Village Idiots (2nd and 3rd place, respectively) made it into the ninth - the tiebreakers - before surrendering a base hit. (OK, I'll drop the strained baseball metaphors now; I guess I'm just eager for spring training to start in a few weeks!) There were also fine performances by five teams clustered for 4th through 8th place: The Genateam (in 4th by virtue of partial credit on a tiebreaker), The Delphi Trivia Club, NAVAIRHEADS, James White, and L'Equipe. Obligatory statistics: mean score was 349, median was 400. As always, thanks to everyone who entered! _____________________________________________________________________________ After each score below are two characters representing the two tie-breakers: + indicates a tie-breaker answered correctly. - indicates partial credit. x indicates a totally incorrect guess. . indicates no guess. Previously used in GOLQ #57.] It's a thousand pages, give or take a few #03) The Beatles: "Paperback Writer" (1966) [1] {-} [Previously used in GOLQ #98.] Yeah, and I'm doin' all right in school They ain't said I broke no rule I ain't never been in Dutch I don't browse around too much #04) Chuck Berry: "Almost Grown" (1959) [32] {3} [Backing vocals by The Moonglows. Previously used in GOLQ #36.] This evening has been (Been hoping that you'd drop in) So very nice (I'll hold your hands, they're just like ice) My mother will start to worry (Beautiful, what's your hurry?) And father will be pacing the floor (Listen to that fireplace roar) #05) Ray Charles and Betty Carter: "Baby It's Cold Outside" (1962) [91] {-} You say you want my lovin' More than any other thing Hey hey hey #06) Dave Clark Five: "Any Way You Want It" (1964/65) [14] {n/c} [Previously used in GOLQ #23.] Please lend an ear That you all may hear Some shimmering sharps and flats #07) Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong: "Now You Has Jazz" (1956) [88] {-} [From the movie "High Society," starring Der Bingle and Frank Sinatra.] My wife and my kids, they packed up and leave me "Darling," she said, "I was yours to be seen" #08) Desmond Dekker & The Aces: "Israelites" (1969) [9] {-} [This song reflects the Rastafarian view of black Jamaicans as being descended from one of the lost tribes of Israel.] [In the last line, "be seen" is given in some sources as "deceive" or "receive." I'm not sure which, if any, is correct; however, none of them make much sense to me. Previously used in GOLQ #70.] After years of acceptance, That little phrase has been swept aside for the modern version: Rhythm and blues, and rubber-soled shoes #09) Tom Edwards: "What Is a Teenage Girl?" (1957) [57] {-} [Spoken-word record by a prominent Cleveland DJ. This song, and the flip-side, "What Is a Teenage Boy?," were spoofs of the old nursery rhyme that declared that little girls were made of "sugar and spice and everything nice," etc.] Well, you wake up in the mornin', boy You hear the ding-dong ring Then you look upon the table, boy You see the same darn thing #10) Paul Evans: "Midnite Special" (1960) [16] {-} [One of many versions of this song, written and first recorded by Leadbelly (Huddie Ledbetter) in the 1930's. The Johnny Rivers version was previously used in GOLQ #42.] Someday, you'll be feelin' so low (lower than low, nowhere to go) Why don't you call on me, girl? That's when I'll show (I love you so, I love you so) #11) The 4 Seasons featuring the "Sound" of Frankie Valli: "Girl Come Running" (1965) [30] {-} [Previously used in GOLQ #116.] Now the people come in here, all the same age Asked a girl the other day, "How old are you?" She say "Seventeen." I say, "That's nice, how old you friend?" She say "Seventeen." I say, "How old you mother?" She say "Seventeen." "You father?" "Seventeen." What's the matter, everybody seventeen? #12) Buddy Hackett: "Chinese Rock and Egg Roll" (1956) [87] {-} [Like song #09, another case of adults being befuddled by those incomprehensible teens! Naturally, during this rant, the band is playing a rendition of the 1955 hit song "Seventeen."] Well, little things you say and do Make me want to be with you #13) Buddy Holly: "Rave On" (1957) [37] {-} [Jonathan Cole appropriately chided me for not capturing Buddy's hiccup-y pronunciation of "We-eh-eh-eh-ell"! All of the group's releases on Coral, such as this one, were billed as by Buddy Holly, while their releases on Brunswick were billed as by The Crickets. Previously used in GOLQ #18.] [Jessica Raine noted: The British folk-rock group Steeleye Span recorded an a cappella version of this which is surprisingly good.] Satan should be her name To me, they're about the same #14) Ernie K-Doe: "Mother-in-Law" (1961) [1] {1} [Written and produced by Allen Toussaint, who also accompanies on piano. The CD "A Real Mother-in-Law for Ya" (a K-Doe best-of) includes an earlier fragment (Take 5), which is at a much faster tempo. The lead-in to the released version (Take 11) is also included, in which Toussaint is heard demonstrating the new slower tempo he wants to try. Toussaint just celebrated his 67th birthday on Jan. 14, but Ernie passed away in 2001. Previously used in GOLQ #22 & #116.] Sittin' in the classroom Tryin' to read my book My baby give me that special look #15) Brenda Lee: "Sweet Nothin's" (1959/60) [4] {12} [Previously used in GOLQ #57.] And the moon, she filled our sails And the stars, they steered our course And on our bow There was a golden horse #16) The Mamas & The Papas: "Dancing Bear" (1967/68) [51] {-} [Previously used in GOLQ #63.] I sent that cat to chase you Now you've got him chasing me #17) Lou Monte: "Pepino's Friend Pasqual (The Italian Pussy-Cat)" (1963) [78] {-} [Followup to his biggest hit "Pepino the Italian Mouse." Like most of Monte's material, the song features a combination of Italian and English lyrics.] Come on, baby, I love your honey-lovin' ways Hey there, sweet thing I love your honey-lovin', your honey-lovin' ways #18) Roy Orbison: "Candy Man" (1961) [25] {-} [Previously used in GOLQ #116.] We gotta let this feeling grow, or let it end You say you care Well, if you do Don't ever go, I'm begging you #19) The Peppermint Rainbow: "Will You Be Staying After Sunday" (1969) [32] {-} [Previously used in GOLQ #24.] She's mean and she's evil Like that little ol' boll weevil #20) Elvis Presley: "Little Sister" (1961) [5] {-} [A two-sided hit with "(Marie's the Name) His Latest Flame," both written by the great team of Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman. Previously used in GOLQ #2.] You are tired and your love is growing cold My love is growing stronger As our affair, affair grows old #21) Otis Redding: "I've Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)" (1965) [21] {2} [Previously used in GOLQ #82.] Well, I was just passing the time I'm all alone Won't you give all your sympathy to mine? #22) The Rolling Stones: "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" (1966) [9] {-} [Previously used in GOLQ #115.] I see you're laughin' and-a Tellin' everyone in town That you've made a fool of me Well, go and talk some more 'Cause, baby, I don't care no more You don't bother me at all #23) Del Shannon: "So Long Baby" (1961) [28] {-} [Previously used in GOLQ #58.] With her went my future My life is filled with gloom So, day after day I stay locked up in my room #24) The Temptations: "I Wish it Would Rain" (1968) [4] {1} [Previously used in GOLQ #47.] Don't tell me what it's all about 'Cause I've been there, and I'm glad I'm out Out of those chains, those chains that bind you That is why I'm here to remind you #25) Dionne Warwick: "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" (1969/70) [6] {17} [From the Broadway show "Promises, Promises," written by Burt Bacharach & Hal David, and starring the late actor Jerry Orbach. Previously used in GOLQ #144.] [Jessica Raine added: "The original cast recording of this show features a lovely male-female duet rendition of 'I'll Never Fall In Love Again' -- the male singer is the late Jerry Orbach." (Howard adds: The female half of the original-cast duet was Jill O'Hara.)] ------------ Tie-Breakers ------------ Said one to the other, "Now listen, you two There's a certain rumor that can't be true That man descended from our noble race The very idea is a big disgrace" #T1) Dave Bartholomew: "The Monkey" (1957) [-] {-} [A cute twist on the perennial evolutionist/creationist debate - a monkey points out the many failings of human society, and declares disgustedly that he is not related to us. Although he recorded quite a bit on his own, Bartholomew is probably best-known for his longtime collaboration with Fats Domino.] I didn't get a chance (I didn't get a chance) To ask her to dance (to ask her to dance) It was love at first sight (love at first sight) I just saw her tonight (just saw her tonight) And I wish somebody would introduce her to me #T2) The Isley Brothers: "Who's that Lady" (1964) [-] {n/c} [Didn't chart, but their uptempo 1973 remake (as "That Lady") was a Top-10 hit.] _____________________________________________________________________________ The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized. The first column indicates the average number of points scored on that song (total points divided by number of entrants). For comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale. Avg.
