GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #200 ANSWERS:

Answers are in the form:
#number) Artist: Title (year[s]) [peak position on Pop chart] {peak R&B}

[-] = did not make pop chart
{-} = did not make R&B chart
{F} = made R&B chart as a flip side
{n/c} = no Billboard R&B chart published during this recording's period
        of peak popularity

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What to do, oh I'm left here just crying
Over you, oh, I'm so blue, what can I do
#01) Anka, Paul: Summer's Gone (1960) [11]

Now me and my mate were back at the shack
We had Spike Jones on the box
She said I can't take the way that he sings
But I love to hear him talk
#02) Band, The: Up On Cripple Creek (1969) [25]

Note: Goose from Delphi Trivia pointed out that the lyric should be "on the
Vox," referring to a Vox juke box. I went back and listened to the recording
and believe he is correct. Thanks, Goose!

Akey rice, salt fish are nice
And the rum is fine any time of year
#03) Belafonte, Harry: Jamaica Farewell (1956) [14]

Note from Tom: After I posted these lyrics, I saw a piece of sheet music that
said, "Akey rice, swordfish are nice." Went back and listened to the words on
the record...couldn't tell for sure; used to perform this song and always sang
"akey rice or fish on ice," but then upon re-listening to make up the quiz I
thought he was saying, "salt fish on ice;" in retrospect, "swordfish" seems to
make the most sense to me. At any rate, I don't think the "fish" part of the
lyrics were the discriminators for those who missed :-)

But when I walk with you
My soul starts every star
#04) Bennett, Tony: I Am (1957) [93]

Was so good to be young then
To be close to the earth
And to stand by your wife
At the moment of birth
#05) Brothers Four, The: The Green Leaves of Summer (1960) [65]

Note: From the John Wayne movie, "The Alamo"

When my friends told me you had someone new
I didn't believe a single word was true
I told them all I had faith in you
#06) Brown, Maxine: Oh No Not My Baby (1964) [24]

The silver moon will fade too soon
And bring the dawn when you'll be gone
Before you go please let me know
That what you feel is really real
#07) Como, Perry: More (1956) [4]

Tom Comment: Pretty big hit for Mr. "C." Wonder how far he'd get with those
lyrics in this day and age?

It was just five years today
When his daddy passed away
He was found beneath the snow
So cold and white
#08) Everly Brothers, The: I'm Here To Get My Baby Out Of Jail (1962) [76]

Tom note: This song was originally released in 1959 on the Everly's album,
"Songs Our Daddy Taught Us," which was one of the first LP's I ever bought.

Come here, little man
Don't be afraid, I'm your daddy
I guess you'll get used to me in time
#09) Goldsboro, Bobby: Molly (1962) [70]

Note: Goldsboro's first song to make Billboard top 100

You've got to prime the pump
You must have faith and believe
You've got to give of yourself
'Fore you're worthy to receive
#10) Kingston Trio, The: Desert Pete (1963) [33]

Note: Delphi says Glenn Campbell is on backup vocals

Though someone that you've met
Has made you forget
Honey, you know you can count on me
#11) Lee, Brenda: You Can Depend On Me (1961) [6]

All you gotta do, honey, is stand in one spot
Wiggle around just a little bit
#12) Lewis, Jerry Lee: Whole Lot Of Shakin' Going On (1957) [2]

So don't roam, just be my honeycomb
And live in a heaven of love
#13) McGuire Sisters, The: Sugartime (1957/1958) [1]

What I'd give if I could hear
The three little words that would thrill the heart of me
Just whisper (shhh) I love you and will eternally
#14) Mello-Kings, The: Tonite, Tonite (1957 & 1961) [77 & 95]

Tom note: Never remembered hearing this song in '57; first heard it in 1960 on
"The Sound of The Hound," an R&R show on WKBW out of Buffalo, which I could
receive in Hartford only on certain nights when the atmospherics were right.
"The Hound" claimed "Tonite, Tonite" was "THE" undisputed greatest oldie-but-
goodie ever, along with "In The Still Of The Nite." Not sure what criteria
"The Hound" used for his claim, and I never could figure out back then why I
hadn't ever heard of it before...wasn't until I got my first Whitburn book that
I was stunned to find out it had peaked at only #77 on Billboard!

und from Delphi Trivia says: I have two copies of 14 in my collection. Both are
on the original yellow Herald label, though one has the word "Herald" with a
capital "H" and small "erald" and the other has it "HERALD" in all caps. The
capital "H" copy calls the song "Tonite, Tonite" and the other one calls it
"Tonite-Tonite." To make life even MORE interesting, the two records have
different spellings for the group's name! The one with the comma between the
Tonites has the group's name as "Mello-Kings." The one with the hyphen between
the Tonites has the groups name as "The Mellokings."

To further complicate: I have a 1960 Herald album by The Mellokings and the
song is called Tonight-Tonight. Anyone who came up with any of the above
combinations was given full credit. Top six entrants listed the song as shown
in my answer.

But something's wrong, I cannot move around
My leg is caught, it's pulling me down
#15) Orbison, Roy: Leah (1962) [25]

Note: Rick Schubert brought to my attention that the song title actually had
an accent mark over the letter "e." Whitburn book confirms this, but I did not
dock anyone for omitting it. Of the top seven teams, only the Village Idiots
included the accent mark in their answers.

Squeeze me, tease me, please me
#16) Paris Sisters, The: I Love How You Love Me (1961) [5]

I was in heaven when I held her hand
And all of her kisses, they were so grand
And I really loved her
#17) Playmates, The: Jo-Ann (1958) [19]

Tom note: A very big local hit in Hartford and one of my personal favorites
because, at the time it came out, I had a crush on a girl named Joanne in my
sixth grade class...ah, the memories.

Well, it's when we're gonna kiss and kiss and kiss and kiss
And we're gonna kiss some more
#18) Presley, Elvis: I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine (1956) [74]

Tom note: This song was first released on Sun in 1954, then re-released by RCA
after Elvis switched labels. A big early Elvis fan, I in 1959 bought the 45
versions of all his "converted-to-RCA" songs, and still have all the RCA
45's....wish I had the Sun versions!

The breeze from the bayou keeps murmuring low
#19) Reynolds, Debbie: Tammy (1957) [1]

With hurry-home-drops on her cheek
That trickled from her eye
#20) Rivers, Johnny: Memphis (1964) [2]

Tom note: One of my all-time favorite lyrics...written and first recorded by
Chuck Berry in 1959.

Well, our children they numbered just about four
And they all had a sweetheart a-knockin' at the door
#21) Rodgers, Jimmie: Kisses Sweeter Than Wine (1957) [3]

Note: Many versions of this song before and after Jimmie Rodgers' version,
including Weavers and PP&M.

Your old man took her diamonds
And tiaras by the score
#22) Rolling Stones: Play With Fire (1965) [96]

Note: Flip side of "The Last Time." Coasters noted that Phil Spector played
guitar on the recording.

The hurt will bring teardrops to my eyes
Though I would pretend that now she's just a friend
You'd look at me and see right through the lies
#23) Vee, Bobby: Please Don't Ask About Barbara (1962) [15]

Pretty little one that I adore
You're the only one my heart beats for
How I wish that you were mine
#24) Wonder, Stevie: My Cherie Amour (1969) [4]

As I look back
I can see me lost and searching
Now I find that I can choose
#25) Young Rascals, The: I've Been Lonely Too Long (1967) [16]

------------
Tie-Breakers
------------

Phase one, in which Doris gets her oats
#T1) Beatles, The: Two Of Us (1969/70)

Tom note: Borderline qualification for the tie-breaker timeframe, but almost
everyone identified this banter leading into "Two Of Us" on the opening of the
Let It Be album. "Two of Us" was recorded for the unreleased "Get Back" album
in Jan 1969; the actual recording date of John Lennon's dialogue above is
unconfirmed but was mixed into the lead in for "Two Of Us" by Phil Spector in
March 1970.

Your friends they say I am a stranger
You'll never see my face no more
There is just one promise that's given
We'll sail on God's golden shore
#T2) Peter, Paul & Mary: Sorrow (1962)

Tom note: This popular folk song has been recorded by many artists over the
years, dating back to 1913, and recorded as recently as the soundtrack for "O
Brother, Where Art Thou." However, as best I can tell, the only artist to use
the above lyrics were Peter, Paul and Mary. I believe the actual title of this
song is, "Man Of Constant Sorrow," though the PP&M Album lists it as just
"Sorrow." I have PP&M sheet music with the full name. So, I am giving credit
to either the full name or the single name but only partial credit unless the
artist was listed as PP&M. All six of the top scorers listed the title as
"Sorrow."

James White noted that our tie-breakers featured the FIRST PP&M album and the
LAST Beatles album!

This chart ranks the songs/artists from most to least recognized. The second
number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that song
(total points divided by number of entrants, to 1 decimal place). For
comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale.

T26 10.6 #04 Bennett, Tony: I Am
T26 10.6 #09 Goldsboro, Bobby: Molly

Tom note: I was very surprised that #21 was the only song that was recognized
by everyone. I was also surprised #16 came out so low, given that Bobby Vinton
had a relatively big remake later, and that #12 fared so low (always thought
that JLL's dialogue was pretty famous). Both #04 and #9 were my "stumpers" and
came out predictably least known, but their overall average was higher than I
anticipated. #T1 and #22 prove that a song doesn't need to chart well to be
well recognized and well known.
