RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #224 (GOLQ224)

Six entrants were perfect on this high scoring quiz. The LORI BAILEY
TEAM and The VILLAGE IDIOTS tied for first by also identifying both
tiebreakers. Other 500 scores were accomplished by RANDY PRICE & PETER
MORLEY, The COASTERS, (my teammate Jean at) ACROSS the BOARDER, and
REALLY ROCKIN' IN BOSTON. L'EQUIPE and GENATEAM each missed only one.
HUGH BRODIE, DELPHI TRIVIA and EJ'S & CO. only missed two each.

Thanks to everyone who entered! I trust it was a fun quiz.

Howard Teitelbaum will be posting GOLQ 225 soon.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #224 ANSWERS:

Answers are in the form:
#number) Artist: Title (year[s]) [peak position on Pop chart] {peak R&B}

[-] = did not make pop chart
{-}   = did not make R&B chart
{F}   = made R&B chart as a flip side
{n/c} = no Billboard R&B chart published during this recording's period
        of peak popularity
=============================================================================

I am a merry ploughboy
And I plough the fields all day
'Til a sudden thought came in to me head
That I should roam away
#01) The Abbey Tavern Singers: Off To Dublin In The Green (1966) [94] {-}

     Genateam notes this is the poem "The Merry Ploughboy"
     by Brendan Behan

#02) The Beach Boys: Wouldn't It Be Nice (1966) [8] {-}

#03) Mr. Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band: Stranger On The Shore
                                                            (1962) [1] {7}

     Coasters note his real name is Bernard Stanley Bilk.

#04) Dave Brubeck Quartet: Take Five (1961) [25] {-)

     Und of Delphi notes it's not an edited version of the LP
     track, but a completely different recording. Jonathan
     Cole says PRI re-broadcast an interview with Brubeck last
     weekend. The Lori Bailey Team thinks this might be the
     only song to chart in 5/4 time, hence the title.

#05) Canned Heat: Going Up The Country (1968/69) [11] {-}

     Howard Teitelbaum mentions this is an adaptation
     of "Bull Doze Blues" by Henry Thomas way back in the 20's.

#06) The Champs: Tequila (1958) [1] {1}

But I let it slip right through my hands
But I let it slip right through my hands
#07) Roy Clark: Tips Of My Fingers (1963) [43] {-}

#08) Ray Conniff And The Singers: Somewhere, My Love (1966) [9] {-}

The dream that I see makes me what I am
#09) Sammy Davis Jr.: I've Gotta Be Me (1968/69) [11] {-}

     The Lori Bailey Team notes this is from the Broadway
     show "Golden Rainbow"

I long for your touch
I love you so much
#10) The Dream Weavers: Into The Night (1956) [82] {-}

     This song scored much higher than expected.

And your hearts will fly away
#11) Tommy Edwards: It's All In The Game (1958/59) ]1] {1}

...just been kissed, graduated and got that twist
The kind of love you can't resist, at..
#12) The Fontane Sisters: Seventeen (1955) [3] {-}

...that she was gonna set me free
I said don't put me down now, it's you I love
But she just said (oh woah)
#13) Gabriel and The Angels: That's Life (That's Tough) (1962) [51] {-}

     I thought this song would prove tougher than it was. My
     45 (Swan 4118) doesn't have (That's Tough) in the title,
     but I found a picture of one that does.

#14) Joe Harnell And His Orchestra: Fly Me To The Moon - Bossa Nova
                                                 (1962/63) [14] {-}

#15) Eddie Harris: It's Crazy (1968) [88] {-}

Ah, yea
Ah, looka here looka here
#16) Wilbert Harrison: "Let's Work Together" (Part 1) (1969/70) [32] {-}

Broken romance, now makes me weep
It makes me walk, walk, walk...
#17) Clarence Henry: "Lonely Street" (1961) [57] {19}

Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
You're never gonna see...
#18) The Irish Rovers: The Unicorn (1968) [7] {-}

To live for today, and to love for tomorrow,
is the wisdom of a fool
#19) Tom Jones: Without Love (There Is Nothing) (1969/70) [5] {41}

Remember that God is a guide and not a storm trooper
Realize that many of the past and present generation
Because of a well intentioned but unjustifiable misconception
Have attempted to legislate morality
#20) Victor Lundberg: An Open Letter To My Teenage Son (1967) [10] {-}

Love him, I love him, I love him
#21) Little Peggy March: I Will Follow Him (1963) [1] {1}

#22) The New Vaudeville Band: Winchester Cathedral (1966/67) [1] {-}

#23) The Rolling Stones: Jumpin' Jack Flash (1968) [3] {-}

Yes now I'll swim ashore for I must make it
#24) Linda Ronstadt And The Stone Poneys: Up To My Neck In High Muddy Water
                                                            (1968) [93] {-}

You're ridin' high in April, shot down in May
#25) Frank Sinatra: That's Life (1966/67) [4] {25}

There was a guy with freckles
The way it's told
With brains and courage
Just forty year old
His hands was quick and his nerves was like steel
#T1) Walter Brennan: The Epic Ride Of John H. Glenn (1962) [-] {-}

     Flip side of "Old Rivers" (GOLQ 114). Most everyone
     correctly guessed the artist. Six entrants also
     identified the title.

I said that's okay buddy, I learned that from my Maw
Then he reached out and handed me a hammer and a saw
#T2) Homer & Jethro: Hart Brake Motel (1956) [-] {-}

     Seven entrants identified this spoof of
     "Heartbreak Hotel" (GOLQ 77,162). The other
     guesses were Bill Haley And His Comets.

This chart ranks the songs/artists from most to least recognized. The second
number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that song
(total points divided by number of entrants, to 1 decimal place). For
comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale.
