RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #231 (GOLQ231)

Congratulations to Randy Price and Peter Morley; the Village Idiots;
GenaTeam; and The Gypsy's Caravan all of whom turned in perfect scores,
including the tie breakers. Seven teams correctly identified all twenty
five songs in the main part of the quiz. Thanks to all -- and we have
entrants from around the world -- for playing, and thanks to everyone for
your patience with our "themes." Our hope was that a theme would add to
your enjoyment. Most folks figured out the themes, or got close: songs
written by Lieber and/or Stoller (except as announced) and by Bob Dylan.
Here's "the rest of the story."

I, Tom, have several times seen "Smokey Joe's Cafe," the musical that show-
cases songs of Lieber and Stoller, and I loved it. I wanted to create a
GOLQ with songs exclusively from the musical. To my disappointment, I
found that most of the songs from the musical (1) were outside of the GOLQ
time window (1955-1969), (2) never made the Billboard charts (were from
albums or movies), or (3) were ineligible due to GOLQ re-use rules. After
a lot more research, I finally found 32 L&S songs that did hit the charts
between 1955 and 1969, and I built the quiz around those songs. Unfortu-
nately, I subsequently found that the re-use rule rendered ineligible about
10-12 of them, especially some of L&S's signature songs, like Hound Dog,
Stand By Me, Kansas City, etc. Ultimately ending up with only 21 L&S songs,
I supplemented them with a sub-theme of four songs penned by Bob Dylan.
Then to my chagrin, I found that, while L&S wrote songs titled "Drums" and
"Take My Love," the songs in my quiz had the same title but they were actu-
ally different songs (though they still provide a loose connection to L&S).
Then to add insult to injury, I inadvertently wrote down the lyrics to
"Good Luck Charm" though I had intended to use the L&S Presley song "She's
Not You." Oh, well. Bottom line is that most folks recognized Lieber and
Stoller's hand in the quiz, and everyone seems to share my opinion that
L&S were talented songwriters who greatly influenced music during the GOLQ
era. Long live their music.

GOLQ232 should be posted before the end of the weekend. Have fun.

Tom and Rick

#03) Byrds, The: Mr. Tambourine Man (1965) [1] {-}

    One of the four songs in this GOLQ written by Bob Dylan.

And when you finish doing that
Bring in the dog and put out the cat

    Featured in Smokey Joe's Cafe. Lieber and Stoller wrote and produced

The janitor said
Please let me sweep the floor
So, I hummed a tune and we
Danced right through the door
#06) Como, Perry: Dancin' (1957) [76] {1}

    Until I researched for this GOLQ, I would never have guessed that
    "Mr. C" covered any Lieber and Stoller songs.

If your friends desert you
Yes, when things go wrong
You can always be sure I care
When you face each dawn
And you think you can't go on
#07) Damita Jo: I'll Be There (1961) [12] {-}

#12) Harris, Betty: His Kiss (1964) [89] {n/c}

And the stubborn old fists on the end of my wrists
Start knocking on your front door

You really need to love me too
So, darling, believe in me
For my love, you know it's true
#14) John, Little Willie: Take My Love (I Want To Give It All To You)
							(1961) [87] {5}

    Lieber and Stoller wrote a song called Take My Love, but it was a
    different song, and did not chart.

Do you feel it when we touch?
Do you feel the beating in your heart?
Do you hear it when we kiss?
Do you feel the throbbing echo start?
#15) Jon & Robin: Drums (1967) [100] {-}

    Tom note: Lieber and Stoller wrote a song called "Drums" but, unlike
    this "smash" hit that peaked at 100, theirs did not chart and was
    different than this one; only the title is the same.

He can take you any place he wants
To fancy clubs and restaurants
But I can only watch you with
My nose pressed up against
The window pane
#16) King, Ben E.: I (Who Have Nothing) (1963) [29] {16}

    Featured in Smokey Joe's Cafe. Tom Jones' version peaked at #14 in 1970.

We never did too much talkin' anyway
#20) Peter, Paul & Mary: Don't Think Twice, It's All Right (1963) [9] {-}

    Another of the Dylan songs in this GOLQ.

Don't want a four leaf clover
Don't want an old horse shoe
#21) Presley, Elvis: Good Luck Charm (1962) [1] {-}

    Tom note: Lieber and Stoller wrote many of Elvis' big hits, including
    "She's Not You," which I had intended to include here. Then I found
    the lyrics to the subsequent song, Lucky Lips, and thought to myself,
    "Those lyrics are nearly the same as 'She's Not You.' I'll use both
    songs back to back for amusement." (I was actually confusing "She's
    Not You" with "Good Luck Charm," which was written by Aaron Schroeder
    and Wally Gold). Both songs were popular in 1962 and have similar
    rhythm patterns; I was thinking of one and remembering the lyrics from
    the other. Bob Bluestein pointed out my error so I had to send out a
    correction to my theme.

I don't need a four leaf clover
Rabbit's foot or good luck charm
#22) Richard, Cliff: Lucky Lips (1963) [62] {-}

    Ruth Brown and Gale Storm also charted with this song.

Do I like to dance?
Of course
Take a walk along the beach tonight?
I'd love to
But don't try to touch me
#23) Shangri-La's, The: Past, Present, and Future (1966) [59] {-}

We got married in a fever
Hotter than a pepper sprout
#24) Sinatra, Nancy, and Lee Hazlewood: Jackson (1967) [14] {-}

    Jerry Lieber contributed to this Billy Ed Wheeler song.

Go away from my window
Leave at your own chosen speed
#25) Turtles, The: It Ain't Me Babe (1965) [8] {-}

    Last of four Dylan songs in this GOLQ.

------------
Tie-Breakers
------------

Huntin' on the corner in a beat-up car
Splittin' up a nickel candy bar
Talking all about how sharp they are
#T1) Beatles, The: Three Cool Cats (1962) [-] {-}

    Although not officially release until the Beatles Anthology series,
    this Lieber and Stoller song, originally released by The Coasters,
    was recorded by The Beatles in 1962 and showed up on Beatles bootleg
    tapes in the later '60s.

One night of heaven
That's all I ever got
Eight to eleven
It ended on the dot
That's when it happened
The very thing I feared
I closed my eyes once
And then you disappeared
#T2) Cheers, The: Bazoom (I Need Your Lovin') (1954) [15] {-}

    This Lieber and Stoller song first appeared on the charts in late
    October, 1954 and just missed being eligible for the main part of
    the GOLQ; under revised rules to take effect on the next quiz, it
    will become eligible. Although The Charms' version was not as
    popular, we also accepted them as artists because they were eligible
    and they fit alphabetically.

This chart ranks the songs/artists from most to least recognized. The second
number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that song
(total points divided by number of entrants, to 1 decimal place). For
comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale.
