Also a special mention to Gypsy's Caravan, who scored 500-+, with 19 out of 20 possible points in the tie-breakers. I think their recent performance of at least 539 points on three straight quizzes still gives them a place in any type of Hall of Fame. GOLQ233's mean score was 398, but the median was an extremely high 478 as a result of several teams getting near perfect scores. Although there was no theme for the whole quiz, the artists for 14 of the songs, including both tie-breakers, were either singers born in the month of June or groups containing at least one well-known member, usually one whose voice could be heard on this particular song, who was born in June. In addition, one of the recordings that didn't meet this theme is of a song that charted again in the post-GOLQ era in a version done by a singer who not only was born in June but fits alphabetically in the same spot as the group in this quiz. If I had thought of this theme earlier in the month, I might have had a chance to find more recordings that fit the theme or even applied it to the whole quiz. I learned several of the June birthdays from a list at: http://lpintop.tripod.com/oldiesconnection/id5.html Others came from the Whitburn "Top Pop Singles" book (2000 edition) or, especially in the case of #03 and tie-breaker #1, facts I've picked up over the years. My thanks to everyone who participated. There's a place for us A time and place for us Hold my hand and we're halfway there Hold my hand and I'll take you there #02) Barry, Len: Somewhere (1966) [26] {-} Len Barry's birthday is June 12. Jessica Raine noted that this is from WEST SIDE STORY, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. So come on everybody get your baggies and bikinis 'Cause it's only just begun We're gonna have a ball until the fall now #03) Bruce & Terry: Summer Means Fun (1964) [72] {n/c} Vito and the Salutations: Bruce Johnston & future mega-producer Terry Melcher, who was the original "target" of The Manson Family. Bruce Johnston's birthday is June 27 (the same day as mine). This song was written by the prolific team of Steve Barri and P.F. Sloan. However, Johnston eventually became a noted songwriter himself. His biggest hit, in the 1970s, was done by another person born in June (who is often mistakenly believed to have written the song himself) - "I Write the Songs" by Barry Manilow, born on June 17. One entry guessed that this was a Beach Boys song. The lyrics certainly could lead someone to guess this. In fact, Bruce Johnston filled in for Brian Wilson when the group went on the road. In my copy of this recording, it sounds to me like they are singing, "get your buddies and bikinis," and that's how I first listed this. During the beta stage of this quiz, more than one person pointed out that it should be "get your baggies and bikinis." While at a dance My baby by my side, He whispers to me Someday I'll be his bride #04) Crystals, The: There's No Other (Like My Baby) (1961) [20] {5} Their first chart entry. I don't know if any of the members were born in June. Everybody loves me, yes they do And I love everybody Since I fell in love with Fell in love with Fell in love with you #05) Day, Doris: Everybody Loves A Lover (1958) [6] {-} Doris Day was not born in June, but as Gypsy's Caravan pointed out, this was also a hit for the Shirelles, whose lead singer, Shirley Alston, was born on June 10. During my childhood, this was one of the first songs I knew by two different acts, although I didn't know who these acts were until my teenage years. I don't have the Shirelles' song in my collection, plus I'd used the Shirelles twice before in GOLQs. One of those earlier times, in GOLQ221, I would have preferred to have used a different act's recording of the song I chose but needed to use the Shirelles' version due to circumstances I explained at the time. So, this time, I used another act. Another reason I used this particular recording is that I had used a song featuring Doris Day's son, Terry Melcher, and thought it would be neat to use one by her, too. "There's No Other (Like My Baby)" was the last song I chose for this GOLQ, so right up until the last minute, son and mother were in consecutive slots. Falling in love is part of the fun Falling in love is everyone Stop being shy Come on now, give it a try Oh, my, my, my, my #06) Dino, Desi, & Billy: Tell Someone You Love Them (1968) [92] {-} Group member Billy Hinsche's birthday is June 29. Dino was Dean Martin Jr., also known as Dean Paul Martin. He was born in November 1951 and died in a plane crash at a young age. Desi was known as Desi Arnaz Jr., although he is actually Desi Arnaz IV. He was born in January 1953 at the same time Lucy Ricardo, the T.V. character played by his mother, Lucille Ball, gave birth on "I Love Lucy" to "Little Ricky." His father, Desi Sr. (actually Desi III), played Ricky Ricardo, the T.V. show's new father. The group's third member, Billy Hinsche, didn't have famous show business parents. I chose this song, which was the group's last Hot 100 appearance, because Billy, the June baby, wrote it. Dean Martin, Sr.'s birthday was June 7. The only songs by him that I have in my collection had been used too recently to be included in this GOLQ, and I did not have enough time to find another qualifying song to use. Desi and Billy are now performing with another one of Dean Martin, Sr.'s sons, Ricci. You can learn more about Ricci, Desi & Billy at their web site, http://www.riccidesibilly.com/. This was the song identified by the fewest entries in this GOLQ. I hope that the teams and individuals who didn't identify it didn't spend too much time listening to songs by the alphabetically-fitting Neil Diamond (known to be a "guilty pleasure" of mine) in a vain attempt to find the answer! (This was not my intention! However, I noticed on the Ricci, Desi & Billy web site that they have recorded Neil's song "Cherry, Cherry.") Had no lovin' since you know when You know I love you Yes I do And I'm saving all my lovin' just for you #07) Domino, Fats: I'm In Love Again (1956) [3] {1} When I was a teenager, I heard a garage band do this song on T.V., and the last line of these lyrics sounded to me like, "And I'm saving all my love in jail for you." I'm bettin' you're not losing Sleep over me But if I'm wrong Don't fail to call Come over and keep me company #08) Edwards, Bobby, with the Four Young Men: You're the Reason (1961) [11] {-} I don't know when Bobby Edwards' birthday is. For all I know, it could be in June. I used this song because it was one with which I became reacquainted when I bought HARD TO FIND 45S ON CD: POP & COUNTRY CLASSICS on Eric last year. The entry in my Whitburn book states that the Four Young Men provided backing vocals, but the way it is listed, it doesn't appear to me that the Four Young Men got label credit. The Four Young Men is shown in the GOLQ Used Recordings list as part of the act name. It is not shown as on the above-mentioned CD that I have. I gave full credit for either listing. No more falsehoods or derisions Golden living dreams of visions Mystic crystal revelation And the mind's true liberation #09) 5th Dimension, The: Medley: Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In (The Flesh Failures) (1969) [1] {6} Group member Billy Davis, Jr.'s birthday is June 26. Jessica Raine noted that this is from HAIR, with music by Galt MacDermot and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado. It was originally two separate songs (the opening and closing numbers of the show). The recording of "Aquarius" on the Broadway Original Cast album has personal meaning for me because when I attempted to learn to ice skate when I was in my 40s, I did a routine in a local rink's carnival with a group of other adult skaters set to this recording. This was the second of two shows I did at this rink. (In the first one, we skated to the 1988 hit "Don't Worry Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin, a song I had never cared for before but now love due to this memory.) Gypsy's Caravan pointed out that this is listed as "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In (The Flesh Failures)" on a team member's 45 and in the Whitburn "Top Pop Singles" book, but on the GOLQ Used Recordings list, it is listed as "Medley: Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In (The Flesh Failures)." Therefore, I accepted both versions as correct. All alone I'm destined to be With misery my only company It may come today and it might come tomorrow But it's for sure I ain't got nothing but sorrow #10) Four Tops, The: Standing in the Shadows of Love (1966/67) [6] {2} Lead singer Levi Stubbs' birthday is June 6. One of two songs with titles containing the phrase "Standing in the Shadows/Shadow" that were Top 10 hits during the 1966-1967 school year. The other one was "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" by the Rolling Stones, which peaked at #9. When somebody sneezed It rolled off the table And onto the floor #11) Glazer, Tom, and the Do-Re-Mi Children's Chorus: On Top Of Spaghetti (1963) [14] {-} A childhood favorite of mine. We sang this at a day camp I attended a few years before this record came out. After my mother bought this record for my sisters and me, we flipped it over and discovered that the B-side, "The Battle Hymn of the Children," was another song we had sung with our friends. ("Glory glory hallelujah, teacher hit me with a ruler....") I read in a book About love and its charms But I, I never knew Til I held you in my arms #12) Gracie, Charlie: Fabulous (1957) [16] {-} A song I heard for the first time when I bought the 4-CD Cameo/Parkway box set in 2005. The meat is on the stove The bread's a-gettin' hot Everybody running Got the possum in the pot #13) Jackson, Wanda: Let's Have a Party (1960) [37] {-} Let's have a party for all of these June birthdays. (But Wanda Jackson's is not until October.) It happens every day No matter what you say You find it happens all the time #14) Jones, Tom: It's Not Unusual (1965) [10] {26} Tom Jones' birthday is June 7. 'Cause he gets up in the morning And he goes to work at nine And he comes back home at 5:30 Gets the same train every time #15) Kinks, The: A Well-Respected Man (1965/66) [13] {-} Lead singer Ray Davies' birthday is June 21. And in the mornings I can see them walkin' I can no longer keep my blinds drawn And I can't keep myself from talkin' #16) Mamas & Papas, The: Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon) (1967) [20] {-} Group member Michelle Phillips' birthday is June 4. I don't know if she provides any of the vocals on this recording, or if that's only Cass (or perhaps even replacement member Jill Gibson) we hear when a female voice is singing. I know that Michelle was in and out of the group because of the dynamics of her relationship with John Phillips, so it's possible that she wasn't even part of the group when this song was recorded. Cheer up sleepy Jean Oh what can it mean? #17) Monkees, The: Daydream Believer (1967/68) [1] {-} Nobody in the group whose birth signs led them to record an album called PISCES, AQUARIUS, CAPRICORN, JONES, LTD. was born in June. A 1979 remake by Anne Murray entered the Hot 100 in late 1979 and peaked at #12 in 1980. Anne Murray's birthday is June 20. Her first Hot 100 chart entry was in 1970. If she had had a record that was eligible for GOLQ233 inclusion, it would have occupied this spot instead of the Monkees. "Daydream Believer" was written by John Stewart, a one-time member of the Kingston Trio, who also had some hits of his own. His first Hot 100 entry, "Armstrong" about astronaut Neil Armstrong, was in 1969. (It has never been used in a GOLQ despite its eligibility. I've never heard it.) His biggest hit was "Gold", which went to #5 in 1979. John Stewart is not to be confused with Jon Stewart, a T.V. personality that seems to be every- where these days, or Neil Diamond, who wrote another song that the Monkees did that has the word "Believer" in its title. (Speaking of the Monkees, what other group represented in this GOLQ also recorded both "I'm a Believer" and "Last Train to Clarksville" on the same album with the song in which they are represented here? Answer below, after #T2.) Ah, that girl of mine By my side The silver moon and the evening tide Oh, some sweet day Gonna take away this hurt inside #18) Orbison, Roy: Blue Bayou (1963) [29] {26} This is a song with which I probably did not become familiar until I heard Linda Ronstadt's hit version in 1977. But I know and love both versions now. Deep in the dark your kiss will thrill me Like days of old Lighting the spark of love that fills me With dreams untold #19) Platters, The: Twilight Time (1958) [1] {1} This is another childhood favorite of mine, along with another hit by this group, "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes." This is the only recording in this quiz in which every entry got the full 20 points. And when my man finally comes home He makes me glad it happened that way Because to be his woman No price is too great to pay #20) Posey, Sandy: Born a Woman (1966) [12] {-} Sandy Posey was actually born a baby girl on June 18. And love is a stranger Who beckoned you on Don't think of the danger Or the stranger is gone #21) Sinatra, Nancy: You Only Live Twice (1967) [44] {-} Nancy Sinatra's birthday is June 8. From the James Bond movie of the same title. I don't know what to do Please my baby I'm so lonely Darling what am I gonna do? #22) Stites, Gary: Lonely For You (1959) [24] {-} Vito and the Salutations point out that he is "Denver's own" Gary Stites. If only you could see the dreams that seem to mean so much to me Then you'd know the reason why I would love to say "I do" Than say "goodbye" and let you go forever #23) Turtles, The: You Know What I Mean (1967) [12] {-} Lead singer Howard Kaylan's birthday is June 22. My life has been empty My heart has been torn It must have been rainy The night I was born #24) Twitty, Conway: Lonely Blue Boy (1959/60) [6] {27} Who took that look away? I remember how you used to say You'd never change, but that's not true #25) Wilson, Brian: Caroline, No (1966) [32] {-} Brian Wilson's birthday is June 20. ------------ Tie-Breakers ------------ And if you say the word I could stay with you #T1) Beatles, The: When I'm Sixty-Four (1967) [-] {-} Vito and the Salutations correctly noted that this is a "homage to Paul McCartney, who turned 64 on June 18...he'll need to write another song, 'When I Was 64.'" Team Teitelbaum was also "glad to see the homage to Sir Paul's 64th Birthday." With all but one entry getting at least partial credit for this song, this was almost certainly one of the highest-scoring, if not THE highest- scoring, tie-breaker in GOLQ history. Although I knew this success rate was highly possible when I chose this song for this quiz, I couldn't resist including it due to its timeliness. Regarding my reference to partial credit -- Because this was such an easy song to identify, I deducted one point for using the numerals "64" instead of spelling out "Sixty-Four" in the title, since this is how it is represented as the title in the lyrics that appear on the back cover of the SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEART'S CLUB BAND vinyl LP. He likes it greasy And sticky And gooey And salty I said what do you like He says you know what I like #T2) Supremes, The: Buttered Popcorn (1962) [-] {-} The lead vocal on this early recording by what became one of the biggest- selling groups of the 1960s was by Florence "Flo" Ballard, who was born on June 30. I had had this song in mind to be a GOLQ tie-breaker for a while, so it was natural to use it this time. (Answer to the trivia question in #17 - the Four Tops.) ============================================================================= This chart ranks the songs/artists from most to least recognized. The second number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that song (total points divided by number of entrants, to 2 decimal places). For com- parison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale. Most songs on this GOLQ ranked where I expected them to be. Of the bottom seven, only "Time for Livin'" did worse than I expected it to perform. "Somewhere" and "Blue Bayou" may have scored higher than expected because of familiarity with other versions of these songs (WEST SIDE STORY performances and Linda Ronstadt's remake, respectively).
