RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #237 (GOLQ237)

Thanks to all for playing in GOLQ #237, and CONGRATULATIONS to top EIGHT!
Teams, all of which identified all twenty five songs in the main part of
the quiz and both tie breakers. In order to provide some separation
among the top eight teams, we made minor deductions for less than perfect
"administrative" reporting. As a discriminator to avoid an eight-way tie
for the top spot, we docked a point for omitting the Jordanaires from the
Elvis Presley single, and for omitting Tony Williams from the Platters
single, something we probably would not have done if so many weren't all
crammed at the top. Our appreciation to those who, while not knowing all
the answers, still submitted an entry for the fun of playing.

Due to an error on our part, the lyrics we provided for song #18 in GOLQ237
are not present in the original hit version of our intended song. Although
we had been questioned about the lyrics early in the month, we were on
business travel and not able to confirm the error until near the end of
the quiz; too late to provide a substitute. Because of the delay and the
inconvenience we probably caused, we decided to VOID the song and credit
everyone. We also decided not to list our intended song for #18 in the
results, in order to preserve the song's eligibility for use in future
quizzes.

We hope everyone enjoyed the quiz.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #237 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:
#number) Artist: Title (year[s]) [peak position on Pop chart] {peak R&B}
[-] = did not make pop chart
{-}   = did not make R&B chart
{F}   = made R&B chart as a flip side
{n/c} = no Billboard R&B chart published during this recording's period
        of peak popularity
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Without a hurt, the heart is hollow
#01) Ames, Ed: "Try To Remember" (1965) [73] {-}

    Tom note: Longtime favorite of mine that was the signature song from the
    40+ year run of the off-Broadway musical, "The Fantastiks." Song was
    covered by a number of artists, but the only version (and not my favorite)
    to chart was this one by Ed Ames.

Those happy hours I spent with you
That lovely afterglow
#02) Anka, Paul: "I Miss You So" (1959) [33] {-}

Now, I may not be a poet
Who can tell his love with words
But I'm sure my heart will show it
#03) Avalon, Frankie: "You Are Mine" (1962) [26] {-}

Full speed ahead, Mr. Boatswain, full speed ahead
#04) Beatles, The: "Yellow Submarine" (1966) [2] {-}

I wake up in the morning and I wonder
Why everything's the same as it was
#05) Davis, Skeeter: "The End Of The World" (1963) [2] {4}

Some things that happen for the first time
Seems to be happening again
#06) Dion and The Belmonts: "Where Or When" (1959/60) [3] {19}

For love's a rose that never grows
Without the kiss of the morning dew
And every Jack must have a Jill
To know the thrill of a dream that comes true
#07) Edwards, Tommy: "The Morning Side Of The Mountain" (1959) [27] {-}

    Tom Note: Song was flip side of "Please, Mr. Sun," Edwards' follow-up to
    "It's All In The Game." I always liked it better than "Please Mr. Sun."

When the evening shadows fall
And the lovely day is through
Then with longing I recall
The years I spent with you
#08) Francis, Connie: "Mama" (1960) [8} {-}

    Comment from Iris: "Biggest gut-wrenching tear-jerker I have
    ever heard!!!"

At last he came to a mansion fine, down by the river Claydee,
And there was music and there was wine
#09) Highwaymen, The: "The Gypsy Rover" (1961/62) [42] {-}

    Tom note: Song was a much bigger hit in Hartford, CT area than
    on Billboard.

The weatherman says clear today
He doesn't know you've gone away
#10) Holly, Buddy: "Raining In My Heart" (1959) [82] {-}

    Tom note: Flip side of It Doesn't Matter Anymore; released soon
    after Holly's death.

Perhaps the glow of love will grow with every passing day
Or we may never meet again
#11) Mathis, Johnny: "It's Not For Me To Say" (1957) [5] {-}

My heart's a toy and like a little boy he breaks it when he's through
#12) Paris Sisters: "He Knows I Love Him Too Much"" (1962) [34} {-}

    Tom note: Syrup-y favorite of mine (at the time) that never made it
    on the charts.

Would you like to know a secret, just between you and me
I don't know where I'm goin' next, I don't know where I'm gonna be
#13) Peter, Paul & Mary: "The Other Side Of This Life" (1966) (100)

    Tom note: Another favorite of mine that never made it--peaked at 100,
    for one week--not exactly a big hit, but a good song by a respected
    songwriter named Fred Neil, who also penned "Everybody's Talkin'".

Swift wings you must borrow
Make straight for the shore
We marry tomorrow
#14) Platters, The, featuring Tony Williams: "Red Sails In The Sunset"
                                                             (1960) [36] {-}

    Tom note: One point deduction for omitting Tony Williams.

Whoops, there goes a teardrop
Rollin' down my face
If you cry when you're in love
It sure ain't no disgrace
#15) Presley, Elvis, with The Jordanaires: "A Mess Of Blues" (1960) [32} {-}

    Tom note: Flip side of "It's Now Or Never." Always liked this tune.

Kisses I could almost taste in the night
#16) Rays, The: "Silhouettes" (1957/58) [3] {3}

    Tom note: Herman's Hermits also covered this song, but they do not
    fit alphabetically so no credit given.

'Cause you've got one lucky fella to love you true
And I got three little words I'm saving for only you
#17) Rydell, Bobby: "We Got Love" (1959/60) [6] {-}

#18) VOID - credit given to all

For my heart would break if you should wake and see me go
So I leave you
#19) Sinatra, Frank: "Softly, As I Leave You" (1964) [27] {n/c}

I don't remember what day it was
I didn't notice what time it was
#20) Spiral Starecase: "More Today Than Yesterday" (1969) [12] {-}

You have a pleasin' personality and that's an ever lovin' rare quality
#21) Temptations, The: "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" (1966) [3] {1}

How can people have no feelings
How can they ignore their friends
#22) Three Dog Night: "Easy To Be Hard" (1969) [4] {-}

If someone else's arms can hold you
Better than my arms can hold you
Go to him and show to him
All your devotion

He sings each night in some cafe
In his search to find wealth and fame
#24) Warwick, Dionne: "Message To Michael" (1966) [8] {5}

The music's soft, lights are low
The mood is one all lovers know
#25) Wilson, Jackie: "Alone At Last" (1960/61) [8] {20}

------------
Tie-Breakers
------------

I wish, I wish, I wish in vain
That we could sit simply in that room again
Ten thousand dollars at the drop of a hat
I'd give it all gladly if our lives could be like that
#T1) Dylan, Bob: "Bob Dylan's Dream" (1963) [-] {-}

    From his "Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" album. Interesting trivia, which I
    had never heard, from Really Rockin' In Boston: The tune is from an old
    English folk song called "Lord Franklin." Lord John Franklin was an
    early 19th century English Arctic explorer who disappeared in 1845 while
    searching for the Northwest Passage. After a few years, the British Navy
    started to get worried and authorized a search, but found nothing at
    first, then eventually found a few graves. After they gave up, Franklin's
    widow financed a search which finally tracked down the sad fate of the
    two ships and 129 men in 1859. The English folk song is about the search
    for Franklin and his crew.

(You threw a) padlock on my door
(You threw my) clothes out on the street
        ('Cause you) don't want my love no more
#T2) Mothers Of Invention: "Later That Night" (1968) [-] {-}

    rom the album "Cruisin' with Reuben and the Jets." Doo-wop 50's/60's
    parody album. Official listed artist on the record is Mothers of
    Invention, not Frank Zappa. We gave credit to those who identified the
    title and answered Frank Zappa, but less credit than those who answered
    the Mothers of Invention; hence the sub-breakout among the top five
    perfect scores.

This chart ranks the songs/artists from most to least recognized. The second
number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that song
(total points divided by number of entrants, to 1 decimal place). For
comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale.
