RESULTS AND ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #270

In a GOLQ rarity, there was only one winner: DELPHI TRIVIA CLUB with a perfect
score. GYPSY'S CARAVAN AND COASTERS identified all the regular songs, MICK
TURSKY and WILL McCORRY just missed. Another rarity in GOLQ scoring, there was
only one tie in the overall scoring, (in fact, there were no ties up until the
last entry was received). The average score on this quiz was a relatively low
435. Thanks to all who entered. GOLQ271 will be posted shortly.

Answers are in the form:
#number) Artist: "Title" (year[s]) [peak Pop] {peak R&B}

      "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

#01) Barbarians: "Moulty" (1966) [90] {-}
     RR: Boston/Cape Cod band with one-handed drummer who wrote a tribute song
     apparently to himself!

#02) Beatles: "Rain" (1966) [23] {-}

#03) Boyce, Tommy and Bobby Hart: "Alice Long (You're Still My Favorite
                                                 Girlfriend)" (1968) [27] {-}

#04) Candymen: "Georgia Pines" (1967) [81] {-}
     QM: Roy Orbison's former back-up band.

#05) Cookies: "Don't Say Nothin' Bad (About My Baby)" (1963) [7] {3}

#06) Davis, Sammy Jr: "New York's My Home" (1956) [59] {-}
     QM: I find it interesting Sammy has no entries in Whitburn's R&B book, yet
     Skeeter Davis does (so does Rolf Harris).

#07) Denny, Martin (The Exotic Sounds of): "Quiet Village" (1959) [4] {11}

#08) Fabares, Shelley: "The Things We Did Last Summer" (1962) [48] {-}

#09) Gilmer, Jimmy and The Fireballs: "Sugar Shack" (1963) [1] {1}
     HT: In those pre-Starbucks, instant-coffee days, espresso was a
     pretty exotic brew!

#10) Gore, Lesley: "That's The Way Boys Are" (1964) [12] {-}

#11) Harris, Rolf: "Sun Arise" (1963) [61] {-}

#12) Jones, Jack: "Wives And Lovers" (1963) [14] {-}

#13) Lee, Brenda: "The Crying Game" (1965) [87] {-}

#14) Lewis, Jerry Lee and His Pumping Piano: "Breathless" (1958) [7] {3}

#15) Mello-Tones: "Rosie Lee" (1957) [24] {-}

#16) Monkees: "Last Train To Clarksville" (1966) [1] {-}
     HT: My favorite version is Cassandra Wilson's darker/jazzier rendition
     from 1995

#17) Preston, Billy: "That's The Way God Planned It" (1969) [62] {-}
     GC: Produced by George Harrison.
     QM: Billy was #174 of the 187 official "Fifth Beatles".

#18) Robbins, Marty: "Don't Worry" (1961) [3] {-}
     QM: This song and clip is historical amongst guitar players as the first
     recorded use of a 'fuzz-tone' guitar solo.

#19) Rolling Stones: "Honky Tonk Women" (1969) [1] {-}

#20) Simon & Garfunkel: "Mrs. Robinson" (1968) [1] {-}

#21) Sloan, P.F.: "The Sins Of The Family" (1965) [87] {-}

#22) Storm, Gale: "I Hear You Knocking" (1955) [2] {15}
     Several: Gale passéd away just before this quiz. In the 50s, she was
     "My Little Margie" on American TV.
     HT: Original R&B hit by Smiley Lewis.

#23) Thomas, Carla: "Gee Whiz (Look In His Eyes)" (1961) [10] {5}

#25) Ward, Dale: "Letter From Sherry" (1963) [25] {-}
     Several: Female voice is Robin Ward, who also was female voice in Pat
     Boone hit, Speedy Gonzales.

------------
Tie-breakers
------------

#T1) Scott, Freddie: "(You) Got What I Need" (1968) [-] {27}
     Several: Sampled by a 1989 Biz Markie song that's recently been featured
     in a ubiquitous (at least in America) Heineken TV commercial.
     Top 30 R&B song.

#T2) Small Faces: "Here Come The Nice" (1967) [-] {-}
     QM: A trivia question in England as one song that got an obvious drug
     reference past the BBC censors. It was their first release on the
     Immediate label that produced many great British Invasion songs that
     never made it to the American charts. I first picked this cut because
     I erroneously thought it was from their Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake album
     that was being discussed in our 60s newsgroup at the time.
