RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #272 (GOLQ272)

Congratulations to the eight teams who tied for first place with perfect
scores, including the two tie breakers. Obviously, the tie breakers were too
easy. Congratulations also to the seven teams who tackled the bonus question.
All correctly noted that the lyrics were from Simon and Garfunkel's, "The
Boxer," and that the lyrics are unique because they were not on the original
recording, but were included in their 69/70 tour and many subsequent
recordings and live performances since then, including Central Park and when
Paul would perform solo. I also received a number of comments that T2 was too
"open-ended" since the song, "Louie, Louie," was performed by too many groups
to mention. Nonetheless, nearly everyone who correctly identified the song
also identified my intended artist, Richard Berry, who wrote the song and
recorded it back in 1955 with the Pharaohs. Incidently, only one team cited
an artist other than Berry, and they too received credit because their answer
met eligibility requirements. We would not accept the Kingsmen or the
Sandpipers because both of them charted with the song, thereby making their
versions ineligible as a tie breaker.

Some of the teams noted some interesting anecdotes about several of the songs,
and we have included them in the notes to the particular songs.

Median score was a "low" 500++, and mean was 417.

Thanks to all who entered, especially those who only knew a few, but played
anyway for the fun of it!

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #272 ANSWERS:

Answers are in the form:
#number) Artist: Title (year[s]) [peak position on Pop chart] {peak R&B}

[-] = did not make pop chart
{-} = did not make R&B chart
{n/c} = no Billboard R&B chart published during this recording's period
        of peak popularity
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not a soul seems to care
The stars in the sky look like teardrops because I've been crying
And the breeze seems to sigh as I whisper my penance in prayer
#01) Annette: "Lonely Guitar" (1959) [50]

You shouldn't have lied now
You shouldn't have lied
#02) Beach Boys: "Fun, Fun, Fun" (1964) [5] {-}

Now it's a restless, hungry feeling
That don't mean no one no good
Yes, when anything that I'm sayin'
You could say it just as good
#03) Beau Brummels: "One Too Many Mornings" (1966) [95]

Tom note: Although the Beau Brummels version is quite obscure, I thought more
people would recognize these Bob Dylan lyrics from the version on his famous
"Times They Are A-Changin'" album.

Gonna find somebody who's twice as cute
'Cause I didn't like you anyhow
#04) Davis, Skeeter: "Gonna Get Along Without You Now" (1964) [48]

Tom Note: Tracy Dey version was not acceptable because she uses slightly
different lyrics.

My darling I need you
To call my own and never do wrong
#05) Diamonds, The: "Little Darlin'" (1957) [2]

And I wonder if you'll always
Always always be blue
Or someday you will find
Someone who loves you
#06) Dion: "Little Miss Blue" (1960) [96]

Tom note: Interesting that this song, which fared no better on Billboard than
the Beau Brummels' "One Too Many Mornings," and to me was much more obscure,
was more identified.

Somewhere there's a church with a great, tall steeple
Inside a church there's an altar filled with flowers
#07) Dorman, Harold: "Mountain Of Love" (1960) [21]

Tom note: Original version that preceded Johnny Rivers' version. Ronny
Dove's lyrics were just a tiny bit different.

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
#08) Feliciano, Jose: "Light My Fire" (1968) [3]

Tom note: Doors, as the artist, did not fit alphabetically

When my memories wander away over yonder
To the sweetheart that I left behind
In the moment of glory
A face comes before me
#09) Helms, Bobby: "Fraulein" (1957) [36]

I said I'd laugh when you left me
Pull a funny as you went out the door
#10) Ives, Burl: " A Little Bitty Tear" (1961/62) [9]

Tom note: I was surprised that this top 10 song was not recognized by more
people (Little Miss Blue at #95 beat it)

And every night we'll have a dance
'Cause what's a vacation without romance
Oh man this jive has me in a trance
#11) Jamies: "Summertime, Summertime" (1958, 1962) [21, 38]

I met her just a year ago
My love for her will grow and grow
Her bright eyes make a fire in me
I cannot live
#12) Jan & Arnie: "Jennie Lee" (1958) [8]

Now that I'm a grown man
I've traveled here and there
I've learned that a bottle of brandy and a song
The only ones who ever care
#13) Kingston Trio, The: "Greenback Dollar" (1963) [21]

Why did you say goodbye to me
Now I'm as lonely as can be
And as I feel a teardrop fall
#14) Lawrence, Steve: "Footsteps" (1960) [#7]

I was a fool to fall and get that way
I should have known the price I`d have to pay
#15) Lester, Ketty: "But Not For Me" (1962) [41]

You can say that you're leading me on
But it's just what I want you to do
Don't you notice how hopelessly I'm lost
That's why I'm following you
#16) Mathis, Johnny: "Misty" (1959) [#12] {10}

I'm gonna run my fingers through your long black hair
Squeeze you tighter than a grizzly bear, uh-huh, yessiree
#17) Presley, Elvis, with the Jordanaires: "Stuck On You" (1960) [1]

Got a hank o' hair and a piece o' bone
#18) Rodgers, Jimmy: "Honeycomb" (1957) [1]

Courtesy of Howard Teitelbaum:
Here's the original 1954 version (on 78!) by Georgie Shaw:

(song runs between 4:27 and 6:45 in the video).

There on the brink of love I kissed her
And obeyed our hearts' command
#19) Rondo, Don: "White Silver Sands" (1957) [7] {-}

Soft kisses on a summer day
Laughing all our cares away
Just you and I
#20) Stuart, Chad and Jeremy Clyde: "A Summer Song" (1964) [7] {-}

I've fooled myself as long as I can
I can feel the presence of another man
#21) Temptations: "(I Know) I'm Losing You" (1966) [8] {1}

Your eyes hold a dream of a love for two
A love so warm and rare
I hope to see that dream come true
A dream we both can share
#22) Tillotson, Johnny: "Dreamy Eyes" (1958/59, 1961/62) [63,35] {-}

I always get what I aim for
And your heart and soul is what I came for
#23) Vaughan, Sarah: "Whatever Lola Wants" (1955) [6] {-}

They say that you're a runaround lover
Though you say it isn't so
#24) Vee, Bobby: "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" (1962) [3]

Won't you guide us (guide us)
And protect us (protect us)
Through the years that lie ahead
Won't you fill our hearts with sunshine
On the day that we are wed
#25) Ward, Billy, And His Dominoes: "St. Therese Of The Roses" (1956) [13]

Tom note: Features Jackie Wilson on lead vocal

Tie-Breakers
------------

If I were you, I'd realize that I love you more
Than any other guy
And I'll forgive the lies that I heard before
#T1) Beatles, The: "No Reply" (1964)
From the British album, "Beatles For Sale," and the US album, "Beatles '65"

Three nights and days me sail the sea
Me think of girl, ooh, constantly
On the ship, I dream she there
I smell the rose in her hair
#T2) Berry, Richard and the Pharaohs: "Louie, Louie" (1955)

Courtesy of Howard Teitelbaum:
There is an important "missing link" between this 1957 original and the
famous 1963 version by The Kingsmen. In 1961, a version by Rockin' Robin
Roberts & The Wailers was a northwestern regional hit. The Kingsmen (from
Portland, Oregon) were clearly familiar with Rockin' Robin's version, as
theirs sounds like a clone, down to the "let's give it to 'em right now!"
yell before the instrumental break. Here's Robin's take on the song:
