RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #273 (GOLQ273)

Congratulations to THE GYPSY'S CARAVAN, this month's winner by
correctly identifying all twenty-seven songs. They were the only
entrant to get the difficult second tiebreaker. Really Rockin'
In Boston came in second with a perfect score. The Coasters,
Vito & the Salutations, The Village Idiots and The GenaTeam
each missed perfect scores by a whisker.

Seventeen of the regular songs were previously unused and one
other was a new song version.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to enter.

The median score was 480, the mean 437.

Howard Teitelbaum will be posting GOLQ274 soon.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #273 ANSWERS:

Answers are in the form:
#number) Artist: Title (year[s]) [peak position on Pop chart] {peak R&B}

[-] = did not make pop chart
{-}   = did not make R&B chart
{F}   = made R&B chart as a flip side
{n/c} = no Billboard R&B chart published during this recording's period
        of peak popularity
=============================================================================

#01) Jewel Akens: "Georgie Porgie" (1965) [68] {-}

     The song opening is similar to "The Birds And The Bees",
     which was used last in GOLQ263 and thus ineligible.

Everybody knows
Between us we'll have
Twenty fingers, twenty toes
#02) Frankie Avalon: "Togetherness" (1960) [26] {-}

Kiss me baby all through the night
Oh baby
#03) The Beach Boys: "Do You Wanna Dance?" (1965) [12] {-}

#04) Booker T. & The M.G.'S: "Time Is Tight" (1969) [6] {7}

But meanwhile it hurts, it hurts
It truly truly hurts
When you know
#05) Gene Chandler: "The Girl Don't Care" (1967) [66] {16}

     Iris of Gypsy's Caravan rightly points out both
     Whitburn and Billboard incorrectly list the
     title as "Girl Don't Care".

I can tell by the way you hold me darling
Hold me darling
#06) Ray Charles: "Crying Time" (1965/66) [6] {5}

Well I swung the hammer just as hard as I could
And you should've heard the wild applause (hooray)
#07) Perry Como: "Kewpie Doll" (1958) [6] {-}

Let's get together
Like old folks used to do
We'll get married
Go to Paris
#08) Fats Domino: "It's You I Love" (1957) [6] {F}

Yes I'm on the road
Once again it seems
All I've left behind
#09) The First Edition: "But You Know I Love You" (1969) [19] {-}

He's tryin' to save all the money he can
But when that undertaker
Let's him down
Where's he gonna spend that money
Under the ground
#10) "Tennessee" Ernie Ford: "That's All" (1956) [17] {-}

But when I turned around
Woah you were not there
And still that
#11) Gale Garnett: "Lovin' Place" (1964/65) [54] {-}

     Mike Weaver mentions Garnett played the role of
     Aunt Lexy in the film "My Big Fat Greek Wedding".

Seems just yesterday
You were in my arms
And in the special way
You touched my heart with all your charms
And now you're gone
#12) Marvin Gaye: "Chained" (1968) [32] {8}

Missed the Saturday dance
Heard they crowded the floor
Couldn't bear it without you
#13) Tab Hunter: "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" (1957) [74] {-}

     By Duke Ellington and Bob Russell, this was a big hit
     by multiple artists in 1943. Some GOLQ participants
     may have remembered the Willie Nelson remake.

Why find out too late
That what you thought was love
Was just a brief fantasy
#14) Jack Jones: "Lady" (1967) [39] {-}

I'm gonna kiss you in a special way
#15) Barbara Lewis: "Make Me Your Baby" (1965) [11] {9}

Nothing is quite the same
When leaves turn gold 'neath September skies
#16) Johnny Mathis: "Wasn't The Summer Short?" (1961) [89] {-}

Can't you see
I've waited too long
#17) The Outsiders: "Time Won't Let Me" (1966) [5] {-}

     Mike Weaver points out the Cleveland based
     Outsiders started out as Tom King and the Starfires.

You'll be back within my arms to stay
#18) Elvis Presley: "When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again" (1956/57) [19] {-}

     From the EP "Elvis, Volume 1".

I don't know
Oh no
Oh no
#19) The Rolling Stones: "The Last Time" (1965) [9] {-}

     Tony Hardy (GenaTeam) likes this as the departing
     song at his (hopefully distant) funeral.

Wouldn't it be a real drag if we were all the same
And I'm not gonna try to please
Eyes that just don't see
#20) Savoy Brown: "I'm Tired" (1969) [74] {-}

Tried to fix his roof
With a rat-tat-tat-tat-tat
#21) The Serendipity Singers: "Don't Let The Rain Come Down
                                       (Crooked Little Man)" (1964) [6] {n/c}

     My own copy of the 45 just has "Crooked Little Man"
     as the title. Lori Bailey of Vito & the Salutations
     says with exclamation this group was from Boulder,
     Colorado.

You're the angel
I've been dreaming of
#22) Shep And The Limelites: "Ready For Your Love" (1961) [42] {-}

Let's take the minutes as they speed away
And hope it's true what people say
When you're in love
#23) Frank Sinatra: "Forget Domani" (1965) [78] {-}

You wanna retire
Get outta the way
#24) Steppenwolf: "Move Over" (1969) [31] {-}

     I might not be alone in seeing this line as quite
     ironic forty years later.

Even roses bloomin' in the rain
With you
#25) Jerry Wallace With The Jewels: "Primrose lane" (1959/60) [8] {12}

Don't leave me lonely tonight
Please say it's alright
#T1) Buffalo Springfield: "Kind Woman" (1968) [-] {-}

     I had the pleasure of seeing The Richie Furay Band perform
     a couple of weeks ago.

     It was produced by Jimmy Messina. GenaTeam points out
     this song was also on the LP THE LAST TIME AROUND.

     Gave partial credit for Poco as artist. A live version of the
     song was on the album DELIVERIN', which was released in 71.

You didn't tell me baby (ooh-wee-ooh)
The frog had died
(Why don't you)
#T2) Kane's Cousins: "Take Your Love (And Shove It)" (1969) [116] {-}

     This show band was from Ft. Lauderdale. According to one
     website, the song reached #24 in the Miami market. There is
     a Cashbox reference to it briefly being at #98 in July of 69.

     Can't seem to find it now, but read a clarifying suggestion
     that "frog" is a substitute for "rabbit" in the lyric.

This chart ranks the songs/artists from most to least recognized. The second
number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that song
(total points divided by number of entrants, to 1 decimal place). For
comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale.
