RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #274 (GOLQ274)

Congratulations to our 3 co-winners, each of whom had a perfect score:
Delphi Trivia Club, The Gypsy's Caravan, and The Village Idiots.

Just behind the leaders (by the length of a tie-breaker or two) were
The GenaTeam in 4th, and Really Rockin' In Boston in 5th.

A special award for the hippest entry goes to Team Teitelbaum North. (Yes,
I'm indulging in an inside joke here.)

This quiz had a minor theme involving the artist (or songwriter) passing
away in the last several months. This theme connected songs #05, 06, 17, 18,
and 22. A number of entrants commented on a few of the artists involved,
although no one identified the theme.

Comments in brackets following some songs are mine, unless preceded by a
2-letter entrant ID.

As always, thanks to everyone who entered! The December 2009 quiz (GOLQ #275)
has just been posted.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #274 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" are number(s) of the GOLQ(s) in which it has appeared.

How I love you
Honey, I love you
I really love you
#06) The Dells: "Stay In My Corner" (1968) [10] {1} <202>

[Johnny Carter, a founding member of The Flamingos in the early '50s,
replaced The Dells' original lead, Johnny Funches, in 1960. Carter
remained with the group nearly a half-century, dying this past August 21.]

Too restless to settle
Too wild to tame
#17) Les Paul and Mary Ford: "Hummingbird" (1955) [7] {-}

[Les Paul died on August 13, at age 94. He performed his regular Monday
evening gig at Iridium (a New York club) until a couple of months before
his passing. In addition to his virtuosic guitar playing, he was an
extraordinary inventor in music technology - he pioneered the solid-body
    electric guitar, multitrack recording, etc.]

[GC: Also done by (but doesn't fit) Frankie Laine (a fave of mine).]

On the rug, or on the wall
If your folks get bugged
Do it in the hall
#22) Soupy Sales: "The Mouse" (1965) [76] {-} <159>

[Soupy passed away on October 22. I have fond childhood memories of his
mid-'60s TV show, combining slapstick for the kiddies with sly innuendo
to amuse older viewers. One episode comes to mind: Soupy lip-syncs to
the Lovin' Spoonful's "Daydream," with the inevitable pastry assault
occurring when he got to "a pie in the face for being a sleepy bull toad."]

[VS: We in Colorado are very sad about Soupy's passing. Some of the Vito
members got a chance to meet him when he was a guest star at the University
    of Colorado's Trivia Bowl.]

I need love now, more than before
I can hardly carry on anymore
#23) The Supremes: "My World Is Empty Without You" (1966) [5] {10} <75>

------------
Tie-Breakers
------------

This one thing I will vow you
I'd rather die than to live without you
#T1) The Monkees: "Mary, Mary" (1967) [-] {-}

[Written by Mike Nesmith, this track was on the group's second album,
"More of the Monkees," hastily released in January '67 when the TV show
became an overnight hit in fall '66. However, the song was first recorded
by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band on their 1966 LP "East West."
(Butterfield sings it as "... than live without you".) The Monkees'
version was later sampled by Run-D.M.C. in their 1988 rap version.
Here are links to Butterfield's version:
     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RflG4g39amw
    and to The Monkees':

It's so many miles and so long since I've met you
Don't even know what I'll find when I get to you
But suddenly now I know where I belong
It's many hundred miles and it won't be long
#T2) Vashti: "Train Song" (1966) [-] {-}

[As a young singer-songwriter, Vashti Bunyan came to the attention of
Rolling Stones producer Andrew Loog Oldham. She put out a couple of
singles in 1965-66 as "Vashti," neither of which had commercial success.
Her 1970 LP "Another Diamond Day" was also a commercial flop, and she
disappeared from the music business, living a rural "off-the-grid" life
for the next 3 decades. In the early 2000s, she discovered that "Another
Diamond Day" was considered a rare and treasured collectable, and that she
was revered by a new generation of "alt-folk" artists. Since her
re-emergence (and the re-issue of her first album), she has released an
album of new material ("Lookaftering"), as well as a collection of
previously unreleased demos from the mid-'60s ("Some Things Just Stick in
Your Mind"). Here's a link to the ethereal "Train Song":
