RESULTS AND ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #284

A four-way tie between BARRY SILK, THE VILLAGE IDIOTS, DA GYPSY's CARAVAN
and DELPHI TRIVIA CLUB. The EJs and WILL McCORRY just missed by a song.

The average score on this quiz took a dip to 384.

There were a few loose themes, song that referred to the passing of time,
some had to do with the GOLQ itself and its history.

Thanks to all who entered and to Barry for the crossword.
On to the next twenty years. GOLQ 285 has been posted.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #280 ANSWERS:

Answers are in the form:
#number) Artist: "Title" (year[s]) [peak Pop] {peak R&B}

where "peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart
      "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

And you will find
Your true love will be
Someone who cares for you
And wants to make you happy
#01) Avalon, Frankie: "Just Ask Your Heart" (1959) [17] {-}

Took me to a shack on the edge of town
All the shades were pulled and drawn
Nobody, not a soul around, she smiled at me
Fixed her drinks and I fixed my hair
#02) Baxter, Duke: "Everyone Knows Matilda" (1969) [52] {-}
  QM: Really obscure song from the 60s, got song airtime in Boston.
      The song inspired one player to submit their first quiz.

I never get heart-broken
No I'll never get the blues
And if I play that game of love
I know I just can't lose
#03) Brown, Ruth: "Lucky Lips" (1957) [25] {6}

He's young, but his bones creak
Young girl dresses for the high school dance
And the guy next door is dying for a peek
Get straight!
#04) Burdon. Eric & The Animals: "White Houses" (1965) [67] {-}

Mary Mack, Mack, Mack
All dressed in black, black, black
Don't you I'm tryin', tryin', tryin'
Just to come on back, back, back
#05) Checker, Chubby: "Hey, Bobba Needle" (1964) [23] {23}

And the rain is pouring down
And the leaves are turning brown
Can you see?
#06) Choir: "It's Cold Outside" (1967) [68] {-}
  QM: The band included 3 of the original 4 members of the Raspberries
      (all except Eric Carmen). I chose this because it was the first
      really obscure song to be included in a GOLQ (GOLQ2). I was also
      curious to see if the QM who first chose it would still remember it.
  MW: Cleveland band. Some of the original members still play as
      "The Sitting Ducks".

When the autumn weather
Turns the leaves to flame
One hasn't got time
For the waiting game
#07) Durante, Jimmy: "September Song" (1963) [51] {-}

Our love is in the past (rat-a-tat)
Oh, has it gone so fast (rat-a-tat)
Why couldn't our love last?
#08) Earls: "Remember Then" (1962) [24] {29}

I said that I was through with you
That I didn't need you anyhow
I said I didn't need you then
But boy, you oughta see me now
#09) Four Preps: "Big Man" (1958) [3] {9}

But he's halfway 'round the world
If he knew the truth, he'd hurt
'Cause his girl's become a flirt
Round the town they say
#10) 4 Seasons: "Toy Soldier" (1965) [64] {-}

But when we grow up
Someday I'll show up
Just to prove I was telling the truth
#11) Hamilton, George IV: "A Rose And A Baby Ruth" (1956) [6] {-}

Oh my friend, we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts, the dreams are still the same
#12) Hopkin, Mary: "Those Were The Days" (1968) [2] {-}

When the clock strikes 'Go'
You'll call it off
And then my tears will flow
Then the blue shadows will fall all over town
#13) Jackson, Chuck: "Any Day Now (My Wild Beautiful Bird)" (1962) [23] {2}

You told me you loved me
You told me you cared
You said, "I'll go with you, darlin'"
Almost anywhere
#14) King, Ben E.: "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)" (1962) [11] {2}

Every time I see that Greyhound bus go rollin' down the line
Makes me wish I'd talk much more to you when we had all that time
Still it's only wishing
And I know it's nothing more
#15) Lovin' Spoonful: "Never Going Back" (1968) [73] {-}

Tell your ma
Tell your pa
We're going back
To Arkansas
#16) Mayer, Nathaniel And The Fabulous Twilights: "Village Of Love"
                                                             (1962) [22] {16}
  QM: Included this as a tribute to former QM TP Uschanov, who was great
      at coming up with 'trick' or misleading lyrics. This was the best of
      them (GOLQ 120). Just like in that quiz, there were several guesses
      of What'd I Say by Jerry Lee Lewis.

And now you ask me to forget the things that took me long to get and find
And go away with you again and follow you and sin and drink your wine
I've made my mind up
I will not wind up
#17) Merry-Go-Round: "You're A Very Lovely Woman" (1967) [94] {-}

My darling dear,
Love you all the time,
I'm just a fool
A fool in love with you
#18) Penguins: "Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)" (1954+) [8] {1}

And now we've grown up, but she didn't wait
And I'm in love with her, but it's too late
She just married someone else today
And I still, yes I still, can hear her say

Time, time, time
See what's become of me
#23) Simon & Garfunkel: "A Hazy Shade Of Winter" (1966) [13] {-}

I've been given 'til sundown
To get out of town
I've been taken outside
And I've been brutalized
And I had to always be the one to smile and apologize
#24) Tex, Joe: "The Love You Save (May Be Your Own)" (1966) [56] {2}

I can still remember
When you moved in next door
I brought you some chocolate
From the corner candy store
#25) Vinton, Bobby: "Rain Rain Go Away" (1962) [12] {-}

-----------
Tie-breakers:
------------

He looked at me eyes wide and plainly said
Is it true that I'm no longer young? (Mommy?)
And the children call him famous
#T1) Jefferson Airplane: "Lather" (1968) [-] {-}
  GC: The opening track from the "Crown of Creation" album.

You condemn a man
If your faith he doesn't hold
You say the color of his skin
Is the color of his soul
But could you say a man
For Queen and country, he must die?
#T2) Knight, Terry & The Pack: "Better Man Than I" (1966) [125] {-}
  QM: Credit was given for Yardbirds, as well although technically the
      lyrics are different between the two. One uses King and Country,
      the other Queen and Country.
  MW: Also by New Colony Six, Victors and others. Alternate title of
      "Mister, You're A Better Man Than I".
