RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #289 (GOLQ289)

Six teams tied for first this time, in order of receipt: Mike Weaver,
The Coasters, Lehigh Valley (Pa.) Trivia Group, GenaTeam, Delphi Trivia
Club, and The Gypsy's Caravan. Will McCorry missed by a tie-breaker.

The theme gave me a chance to use T2, 12, 15, 18, 22 and those chilling
two seconds of #19 in the same quiz. There was no shortage of choices
to fill out the rest.

The median score was 480, the mean 434.

GOLQ290 will be posted shortly.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #283 ANSWERS:

Answers are in the form:
#number) Artist: Title (year[s]) [peak position on Pop chart] {peak R&B}

[-] = did not make pop chart
{-}   = did not make R&B chart
{F}   = made R&B chart as a flip side
{n/c} = no Billboard R&B chart published during this recording's period
        of peak popularity
=============================================================================

#01) Paul Anka: "Remember Diana" (1963) [39] {-}

#02) Toni Arden: "Padre" (1958) [13] {-}

#03) Long John Baldry: "Let The Heartaches Begin" (1968) [88] {-}
  GT: This reached #18 in Australia in January, 1968.
  DT: An "influential blues-rocker from England", who once formed a
      group with Rod Stewart and another with Elton John.

#04) Beatles: "I Don't Want To Spoil The Party" (1965) [39] {-}
  QM: Once described as the perfect funeral song, if a suicide is involved.

#05) Henson Cargill: "Skip A Rope" (1967/68) [25] {-}

#06) Petula Clark: "Kiss Me Goodbye" (1968) [15] {-}
 GT: This reached #11 in Australia in April, 1968.

#07) Sanford Clark: "The Fool" (1956) [7] {5}

#08) Drifters: "I Count The Tears" (1960/61) [17] {6}
  DT: Lead vocals by Ben E. King

#09) Duane Eddy, His 'Twangy' Guitar and the Rebels:
     "Forty Miles Of Bad Road" (1959) [9] {17}

#10) Etta & Harvey: "Spoonful" (1960) [78] {12}
  QM: Sorry everyone, several teams told me this was actually an Etta James
      solo version and not the Etta & Harvey version. I'm not sure how I ended
      up with it, but apparently you just can't trust the Internet
      when downloading.

#11) R.B. Greaves: "Take A Letter Maria" (1969) [2] {10}

#12) Tommy Hunt: "I Am A Witness" (1963) [71] {71}

#13) Brian Hyland: "I'm Afraid To Go Home" (1963) [63] {-}
  QM: B-side is "Save Your Heart For Me", a later hit for Gary Lewis.

#14) Jaynetts: "Sally Go 'Round The Roses" (1963) [2] {4}

#15) Terry Knight And The Pack: "I (Who Have Nothing)" (1966/67) [46] {-}
  Several: This group morphed into Grand Funk Railroad, with Terry as manager,
     and Mark Farner as lead guitarist.

#16) Dickey Lee: "Patches" (1963) [6] {10}

#17) Lulu: "Morning Dew" (1968) [52] {-}
  QM: Canadian Bonnie Dobson wrote this tale depicting life after an
      apocalypse. Covered many times, Tim Rose has one of the better-known
      versions.

#18) Roger Miller: "One Dyin' And A Buryin'" (1965) [34] {-}

#19) Elvis Presley with the Jordanaires: "Are You Lonesome To-night?"
                                                               (1960) [1] {3}

#20) Jack Scott: "Burning Bridges" (1960) [3] {5}

#21) Nina Simone: "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" (1960) [93] {23}

#22) Verdelle Smith: "In My Room El Amor" (1966) [62] {-}
  QM: I'd forgotten how much she sounds like Dusty, but how bad can it be if
      you end up listening to your entire Dusty collection thinking this will
      be in it? Another oddity I noticed after the quiz started, the flip side
      is her version of #24. Both of her charted songs were translated from
      foreign languages and the titles appear in numerous forms. Nancy Sinatra
      did a decent cover version of this.

#23) Three Dog Night: "One" (1969) [5] {-}

#24) 2 of Clubs: "Walk Tall" (1967) [92] {-}
  QM: This duo apparently stills performs this live, as there is a Youtube
      video of the song featuring a much older 2 of Clubs.

#25) Adam Wade: "The Writing On The Wall" (1961) [5] {21}

#T1) Darnells: "Too Hurt To Cry, Too Much In Love To Say Goodbye"
                                                             (1963) [117] {-}
  Several: A tribute to Gladys Horton, who passed away days before the quiz
     started. The Darnells are really the Marvelettes, as Motown tried to
     revive their then-stalled career by packaging them with a different sound
     and group name. However, the lead voice is too distinctive to fool many.
     The Supremes version was also accepted.

#T2) Zager and Evans: "Mister Turnkey" (1969) [106] {-}
  QM: My all-time WTF choice for a follow-up to a worldwide hit, which might
      be the only reason this song received any airplay at all. Besides having
      lyrics like "She was lovelier than oil rights", they had to know the
      subject matter (convicted rapist nails his wrist to a prison wall to
      atone for his crime) had airplay-ending potential. The song was quickly
      dropped from most radio playlists, and Zager and Evans quickly faded
      from the airwaves.

This chart ranks the songs/artists from most to least recognized. The second
number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that song
(total points divided by number of entrants, to 1 decimal place). For
comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale.
