RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #304 (GOLQ304)

There was a three-way tie for first with perfect scores. Congratulations to
the Delphi Trivia Club, the EJ's & Co., and the Village Idiots!

Two other teams had nearly perfect scores, missing the gold by half of a
tie-breaker - excellent job by DEC & Friends and the GenaTeam. Fine showings
also by Will McCorry, Really Rockin' In Boston, Vito & the Salutations, and
Mike Weaver.

After each song, I've given one or more audio links (YouTube, mostly).
Sound quality and permanence of links are not guaranteed.

As always, thanks to everyone who entered! The June 2012 quiz (GOLQ #305)
has been posted.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #304 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

In my brain
I see your face again
I know my frame of mind
You ain't got to be so blind
And I'm blind, so, so, so very blind
#01) The Bee Gees: "To Love Somebody" (1967) [17] {-} <123>
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykU8iSKkJR0

[Robin Gibb passed away on May 20; his twin, Maurice, died in 2003.
Barry, the eldest (and surviving) brother, sang lead on this song.]

Take me by my little hand
And go like this
#02) Chubby Checker: "The Twist" (1960,1961/62) [1,1] {2,4} <6><227>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5jDVbY7a7U (Hank Ballard & The Midnighters)
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fUNSBvNur4 (Chubby Checker)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KH-F8XA4mfA (Hank on "To Tell the Truth")

[Written by Hank Ballard; the original version by Hank Ballard & The
Midnighters appeared in 1959, as the B-side to "Teardrops on Your Letter."
After Ballard's version became a moderate local hit, Dick Clark (who died
this April 18) attempted to book the group to perform it on American
Bandstand. When they proved unavailable, Clark arranged for Checker, a
local Philadelphia artist, to record a new version. Chubby and Hank had
similar voices, and the arrangement matched the original very closely.

    Once Chubby's version became a hit in 1960, Ballard's 1959 disc was
re-issued (with "The Twist" now cast as the A-side), hitting #28 on the
pop chart. "Ballard" doesn't fit alphabetically in this quiz, however.

In 1961, Ballard appeared on the game show "To Tell the Truth." Only one
of the four panelists was able to discern who the real inventor of the
Twist was. The show is a fascinating period piece; for one thing, the
"impostors" each received a carton of the sponsor's cigarettes!]

Gee, but you've got my heart rockin'

And that crazy Ivy League shirt
#03) Dee Clark: "Hey Little Girl" (1959) [20] {2} <64>

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_PhR0mdzvg

Mama, she always told me it would happen
But she never said that it would happen like this
Papa said some little girl'll catch you nappin'
Some little girl'll get to you with her kiss
#05) Neil Diamond: "You Got To Me" (1967) [18] {-} <46>
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OWv9w7RPDU
(stereo LP version; source of mono single mix)
  http://wfmu.org/flashplayer.php?version=2&show=40444&archive=69342&starttime=1:52:30
(mono LP version; different lyrics than single)
  http://home.netcom.com/~zmoq/pages/neilbang.htm (describes recording variants)

[Diamond's early recordings on Bang records, such as this one, exist in
many versions/remixes. The song was initially released in 1967 as a single
and as a track on the "Just for You" LP. The single was essentially a mono
mix-down of the stereo LP version (with some additional overdubs), whereas
the mono LP contained a different lead vocal take (same backing vocals),
with a number of lyrical differences.]

Ah, come on in closer, baby
Hear what else I gotta say

And sock-sock-sock it to me, girl
And sock it to me, girl

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaK2IsZ7RN0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4636TWKTmYk (Jimmy Castor & The Juniors)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2UqawbiznQ (Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers)

[Co-written by Jimmy Castor, who died 1/16/12 at 71. (Some obits had Jimmy
as young as 64, but his family confirmed a 1940 birth year.) His group,
Jimmy Castor & The Juniors, recorded the song first, in 1956. Frankie
Lymon was a neighborhood friend; his group covered the song (with a much
more polished sound) and had the hit. Castor went on to have hits as a
vocalist and instrumentalist in the '60s and '70s.]

#20) The Pips: "Every Beat Of My Heart" (1961) [6] {1} <39><166>

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbcCQnNZrVs (GK&P, 1970 Motown version)

[Written by the great Johnny Otis, who died 1/17/12 at 90. His obit aptly
describes him as "musician, bandleader, songwriter, impresario, disc
jockey, and talent scout." He mentored a generation of R&B performers,
such as the late Etta James (see song #13), who called him her "guru."
Speaking of his long association with black musicians, Otis noted:
"Genetically, I'm pure Greek. Psychologically, environmentally,
culturally, by choice, I'm a member of the black community."

This song was originally recorded by The Royals in 1952 (pre-Hank Ballard).
Gladys Knight & The Pips recorded this song at least 3 times. Their first
1961 version appeared on the Huntom and Vee-Jay labels, billed as by
"The Pips"; the chart info for this version is given above. Shortly
thereafter, they recorded another version for Fury, peaking at
pop #45/R&B #15; this introduced the now-familiar billing of "Gladys Knight
& The Pips." The group recorded yet a third version in 1970 for Motown.]

Well, I used to pull your pigtails
And pinch your turned-up nose
But you've been a-growin'
And, baby, it's been showin'
From your head down to your toes
#21) Elvis Presley: "Little Sister" (1961) [5] {-} <2><216>
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBS2NcFJBaE

[A two-sided hit with "(Marie's the Name) His Latest Flame."]

#22) Della Reese: "Not One Minute More" (1959/60) [16] {13}

#23) Benny Spellman: "Lipstick Traces (On A Cigarette)" (1962) [80] {28}
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3qRRd1Pr94 (Benny Spellman)
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bXVq_IHSfI (O'Jays)

[Written by producer Allen Toussaint, under the pen name of Naomi Neville.
Spellman is best known for providing the bass counterpoint vocals on Ernie
    K-Doe's hit, "Mother-in-Law" (another Toussaint composition/production).
In fact, the end of "Lipstick Traces" has a similar call-and-response bit.
(Wonder if Ernie returned the favor - sounds rather like him doing the
"leave me no more" replies.) Benny passed away on 6/11/11, at age 79.

The O'Jays version from 1965 (pop #48) was used in GOLQ #197.]

Please don't mistake me
Or try to make me
The shadow of anybody else
I ain't the him or her you think I am
I'm just trying hard to be myself
#24) The Turtles: "Let Me Be" (1965) [29] {-} <63><150>
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5czjBBBRas (P. F. Sloan)
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGjKXJOHhFs (The Turtles)

[Written by P. F. Sloan, whose own version appeared in 1966 on his LP
"Twelve More Times." (This may have been recorded earlier, as the song's
demo.) Sloan's version has slightly different lyrics than the above.]

Every time we meet
Everything is sweet
Ooh, you're so tender
I must surrender
#25) The Vogues: "You're The One" (1965) [4] {-} <13><100>
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TBFjMbXbbQ (Petula Clark)
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQosdyt0FsI (The Vogues)

[Written by Petula Clark and her producer, Tony Hatch; originally a track
on her "I Know a Place" LP. Once The Vogues' cover began climbing the
American charts, her version was released as a single in the U.K.
Reportedly, Petula graciously vetoed releasing hers as a single in the
U.S., not wanting to step on the Vogues' first hit.]

#T1) The Beatles: "She's Leaving Home" (1967) [-] {-}
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uo2KPacj7qs (mono mix, Fmaj, faster)
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQNAGAbi3G0 (stereo mix, Emaj, slower)

[By the time of Sgt. Pepper, the group and producer George Martin were
deeply into experimenting with recording techniques - slowing down,
speeding up, backwards, collages of sound effects. The era of
dual-inventory (mono & stereo) LPs was not quite over, so Pepper was
issued in both formats. Many of the songs on the album have noticeable
differences in their mono & stereo incarnations.

In the case of "She's Leaving Home," the stereo mix is pitched a semi-tone
lower (in E major rather than the mono's F major), and is correspondingly
slower. The mono is the as-recorded pitch/tempo.]

The radio's playin'

#T2) Zalman (Zally) Yanovsky: "As Long As You're Here" (1967) [101] {-}
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwHYEIOfIWs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXdoB5DLEBg (Zoe interview re: memorial fund)

[Zal was The Lovin' Spoonful's original lead guitarist, departing in 1967.
This single, and a contemporary LP, "Alive and Well in Argentina," were his
only releases as a solo artist. (The original LP omitted this single, but
it was included when the LP was reissued in 1971.)

Zal later became a restaurateur with his wife, Rose Richardson, founding
Chez Piggy (restaurant) and Pan Chancho (bakery) in Kingston, Ontario.
