RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #308 (GOLQ308)

Congratulations to Delphi Trivia Club, who won by the length of a tie-breaker!

Just off the pace were The EJ's & Co. and the Village Idiots, both of whom
solved all 25 regular songs and one tie-breaker. Also, fine performances by
DEC & Friends and Mike Weaver.

I mentioned the quiz having two mini-themes; each comprised 5 songs, and
coincidentally, each was ID'd by 5 entrants. The first was songs with "moon"
in title or artist, in honor of the late Neil Armstrong, who died Aug. 25 at
82. This theme included songs 01, 04, 05, 12, and 16; it was ID'd by teams
DT, EJ, MW, WM, and VS. Team VS quipped that it could also be an homage to the
late Rev. Sun Myung Moon, and they further mentioned the surf group The
Astronauts, who were recently inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame!

The second mini-theme was songs with lyrics by the late Hal David (died
Sept. 1, age 91) - songs 03, 13, 17, 20, and 24. This was ID'd by teams
EJ, NA, WM, VS, and JR.

In addition to these explicit themes, I often try to honor recently departed
artists (or others with some connection to GOLQ-era music). I had selected
songs 02 and 15 with this in mind. Unfortunately, during the course of the
quiz, song 25 got added to this category.

After each song, I've given one or more audio links (YouTube, mostly).
Sound quality and permanence of links are not guaranteed.

As always, thanks to everyone who entered! The October 2012 quiz (GOLQ #309)
will be posted shortly.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #308 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fill my heart with song
And let me sing forever more
You are all that I long for
All I worship and adore
#01) LaVern Baker: "Fly Me To The Moon" (1965) [84] {31}
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcwlGjDNkkw (Kaye Ballard, 1954)
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtFBRJFN3p8 (Frank Sinatra, 1964)
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DweR3TB1VrQ (LaVern Baker)

[First recorded in 1954 (pre-GOLQ time frame) by Kaye Ballard under the
song's original title, "In Other Words." Song has been recorded by
countless artists, most famously by Frank Sinatra for his 1964 LP "It Might
As Well Be Swing." Previous GOLQs used the Joe Harnell (1962) and Tony
Bennett (1965) versions, neither of which fit alphabetically.]

But every now and then, I feel so insecure
I know that I just need you like
I've never done before
#02) The Beatles: "Help!" (1965) [1] {-} <99><246>
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHmxi-VXmHI
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BiFIb1FC4k (Victor Spinetti in "Help!")

[Victor Spinetti, who acted in "A Hard Day's Night," "Help!," and "Magical
Mystery Tour," died at 82 on June 18. The second link above shows a clip
featuring him in "Help!". (As an electrical engineer, I loved Victor
shouting "the voltage, up, up, up!")]

My darling, if this is goodbye
I just know I'm gonna cry
#03) Jerry Butler: "Make It Easy On Yourself" (1962) [20] {18} <125>
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCtVWYsnzNA (Dionne Warwick demo)
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLlBzu2LRPA (Jerry Butler)

[Subsequent charting versions by The Walker Brothers (1965) and Dionne
Warwick in 1970 (a live version). Dionne had recorded the song's original
demo for Burt Bacharach & Hal David in 1962; this was released on her
    debut LP in 1963.]

There's a girl in my heart
Whose heart I've stolen
#04) The Capris: "There's A Moon Out Tonight" (1960/61) [3] {11} <34><101>
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0KnROFx0Tc

[Originally released in 1958; the song flopped, and the group disbanded
shortly thereafter. In 1960, a New York DJ obtained a copy, and got an
enthusiastic response from listeners, prompting its hurried re-release.]

I know that I
Meant every sigh
When you hugged me the way you hugged me
And you kissed me the way you kissed me
#05) Perry Como: "Moon Talk" (1958) [28] {-}
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9_Ssz2aT4s

And it really isn't love at all
#07) The Dixie Cups: "People Say" (1964) [12] {n/c} <11><152>
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U040ep1K9UY

Under the trees, out where it's breezy
Nobody here but me and you
We'll do the things we've meant to do
Sit back, relax, and take it easy
#08) Every Mothers' Son: "Put Your Mind At Ease" (1967) [46] {-} <30>
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeEEultHYVw

    Clarksville."]

Never thought I'd find a girl like you
Now I have, I know I'll never be blue
#09) Gerry and The Pacemakers: "It's Gonna Be Alright" (1965) [23] {-} <32><99>

He'll tear it apart
So you better get smart
#10) The I'des Of March: "You Wouldn't Listen" (1966) [42] {-} <185>
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bHKw8pyUUU
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRX_Pd93Od0 (B-side: "I'll Keep Searching")

[Highlight of the record is the killer B-side, methinks. The group later
dropped the apostrophe, added a horn section, and had their one huge hit
    in 1970 with "Vehicle."]

Always you, always me
Won't you take me along to be with you
#11) Wanda Jackson: "Right Or Wrong" (1961) [29] {-}
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbu9_xrQ3Rw
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf5FvUt7iIw (B-side: "Funnel of Love")

[As with song #10 above, I think the stronger track is on the B-side.
    Ronnie Dove's 1964 version was used in GOLQ 40 & 220.]

Church full of singing, out of tune
#12) Jonathan King: "Everyone's Gone To The Moon" (1965) [17] {-} <8><108><162>
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou5oow08rN4

But every time I see them, I pray
And if my prayer can cross the sea
#13) Billy J. Kramer and The Dakotas: "Trains And Boats And Planes"
    (1965) [47] {-} <148><232>
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80hCTywP8Xs

[Billing on this release is uniquely "and" rather than "with" the Dakotas.
A Bacharach/David composition; also recorded by their greatest interpreter,
    Dionne Warwick, in 1966.]

And if you're quick enough to rise
You'll catch the fleeting glimpse of someone's fading shadow
#14) Bob Lind: "Elusive Butterfly" (1966) [5] {-} <10><139>
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPH8RxDZ_eY

[Jessica Raine cited Dave Barry's "Book of Bad Songs," which lists this
one under the "Weenie Music" category: "In reference to the line in the
refrain about 'don't be concerned, it will not harm you,' it states:
'Yo. Bob. We're not concerned. Leave us out of it.'"

The VS team, proud Coloradans, note that Lind is from Denver.]

Baby, yes, I need your love
But I'm not gonna get this low
Don't you think that I can tell
When you've got no place else to go
#15) Scott McKenzie: "Like An Old Time Movie" (1967) [24] {-} <134>
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQknrimpNnY

(Irma Thomas, "Ruler of My Heart")
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=158fwCG27zE (Otis Redding)

[Otis' re-working of Irma Thomas' 1963 "Ruler Of My Heart," which was
written by Allen Toussaint. (Writing credit shows the pseudonym of Naomi
Neville, which was Toussaint's mother's maiden name.)]

The days have come and gone since you were here
Nights are twice as long without you near

[From the movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"; writers Burt
Bacharach and Hal David won an Oscar for best song.

Bryan Shailer noted that John Farnham had hits in Australia with
versions of songs #02 and 20.]

When you find your fascination in the arms of other guys

Still you take off in a hurry anytime it pleases you
And you only start to worry when I say I'm leaving you

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3xhr8XrMKo (Bobby Vinton)

[Originally a pop hit for Tony Bennett in 1951/52. Subsequently, an R&B
hit for The Clovers in 1955. A version by The Statues also (barely)
    charted in 1960.]

It's a day I've dreamed of so long, now it's coming true
#24) Dionne Warwick: "You'll Never Get To Heaven (If You Break My Heart)"

Uh oh, uh oh, I gotta turn the corner, man!
Gotta turn the corner!
#T1) The Medallions: "Buick 59" (1954) [-] {-}

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SgU1FgoQEs (The Medallions)

[This song (as well as its flip, "The Letter") was a minor regional hit.
The title and melody reference the 1951 recording of "Rocket 69" by the
Todd Rhodes Orchestra (featuring Connie Allen's vocal). The earlier song
was itself a risque take-off on the 1951 hit "Rocket 88".]

I woke up last night
Half past four
Fifteen women knockin' at my door
#T2) Carl Perkins: "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby" (1957) [-] {-}
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHOK0YSjBU0 (Rex Griffin, 1936)

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbCN5zWQLTU (Carl Perkins, alternate take)
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi-0efIOM0Y (The Beatles, 1964)

[The song was originally written & recorded by Rex Griffin in 1936,
although Perkins updated the lyrics and arrangement. Covered by The
Beatles in 1964, appearing on their "Beatles for Sale" LP (on "Beatles '65"
in the U.S.). George sang lead in the Beatles' version; Ringo did the
honors for their other Perkins covers ("Matchbox" and "Honey Don't").]

The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized.
The first column indicates the average number of points scored on that song
(total points divided by number of entrants). For comparison purposes,
tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale.
