Close behind were Really Rockin' in Boston with 500.+, NAVAIRHEADS with 500+., and BP Oz with 500... The three themes of this quiz were: 1. Songs recorded by Linda Ronstadt, in honor of her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. 2. Songs recorded by Johnny Rivers. I consider Linda Ronstadt to be the "Queen of Remakes" and Johnny Rivers to be the "King of Remakes." Most of these were songs he remade, but one song that became a hit for some- one else later which he recorded first is included here. 3. Songs recorded by the 4 Seasons (including under the name Wonder Who?) or Frankie Valli as a solo artist. Although the JERSEY BOYS movie is about to be released, this was just a coincidence. I thought they would be a good fit as an artist that both did remakes and had original recordings that were remade. Most entries identified one or more of the themes, and a few even noted which songs belonged with which theme. Really Rockin' In Boston noted which featured theme artist also recorded each song and, where applicable, the year and peak position for their version. I have noted this information from them with each song. To avoid having to go through discographies of each of these artists, I lim- ited my selection criteria to: 1. Songs listed in the 2009 edition of the Whitburn TOP POP SINGLES book as a Hot 100 charting song, Bubbling Under entry, B-side to a Hot 100 chart- ing song, or Classic Non-Hot 100 Song. or 2. Songs included on the following CD anthologies: a. LINDA RONSTADT'S GREATEST HITS, VOLUME ONE and LINDA RONSTADT'S GREATEST HITS, VOLUME TWO, packaged and sold separately, originally released on vinyl by Asylum Records in 1976 and 1980, respectively, and later reissued on CD. b. JOHNNY RIVERS ANTHOLOGY 1964-1977, 2-CD set released by Rhino in 1991. c. FRANKIE VALLI AND THE 4 SEASONS 25TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION, 3-CD set released by Rhino, probably around 1987. I did check some discographies to see if there were any two-fers other than "Tracks Of My Tears," done by both Linda Ronstadt and Johnny Rivers and included in this GOLQ, and "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" (RIP Gerry Goffin), done by both the 4 Seasons and Linda Ronstadt but not eligible for inclusion in this GOLQ because it had been used too recently in another one. I had not known that Linda did a version of this song that reached #111 on the Bubbling Under chart in 1970 until I saw it in the Whitburn book while putting this GOLQ together. I did find that one other song in this GOLQ was done by both Linda and Johnny: "Silver Threads and Golden Needles." I did not find any two-fers for the 4 Seasons and Johnny Rivers. In addition to "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" by the Shirelles, there were several other songs that I wanted to use but had to exclude due to having been used too recently (such as "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" by the Kingston Trio, which would have nicely filled a big alphabet gap), alphabet crowding (such as "When Will I Be Loved" by the Everly Brothers), and duplicate artist (such as"Back in the USA" by Chuck Berry). GOLQ328's mean score was 442.50, and the median was 500. (I wonder if the median has ever been 500 before.) My thanks to everyone who participated. Their original version was on the LP THE BEACH BOYS TODAY! earlier in '65, as "Help Me, Ronda." After the LP release, they re-recorded it for the single. The earlier version differs from the single in many ways: ukulele intro, false endings, etc. A Cadillac a-rollin' on open road Nothin' outrun my V8 Ford #02) Berry, Chuck, and His Combo: Maybellene (1955) [5] {1} Johnny Rivers #12 in 1964 I chose this Chuck Berry song instead of "Back in the U.S.A.," which was a #16 hit for Linda Ronstadt in 1978, because I wanted to insert something I left out of my comments for this song when I used it in GOLQ281. In that GOLQ, I used a few songs that had also been recorded by Paul Revere and the Raiders, but I forgot to note that this was one of them. This was Johnny Rivers' second Hot 100-charting song. His first was "Memphis," another Chuck Berry remake. Silver dollar Rabbit's foot With a four-leaf clover and a horseshoe #03) Billy & Lillie: Lucky Ladybug (1958) [14] {-} 4 Seasons B-Side to "Walk Like A Man" I enjoyed Billy & Lillie when I was a child. I have been trying to locate a song I could have sworn I heard them sing, but I have not found any re- ference to any such recording of it anywhere online. It is a much-recorded, much-performed song I have learned only in the past two years is called "Tiger Rag." Maybe I heard them sing it on a T.V., even if they never recorded or released it. She'll cry just to think I'd really leave her Though time and time I've tried to tell her so She just didn't know I would really go #04) Campbell, Glen: "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" (1967/68) [26] {-} Really Rockin' In Boston: Originally recorded by Johnny Rivers, written about cousin of Linda Ronstadt. This song was written by Jim Webb, who wrote a few other Glen Campbell hits. You know you love me baby Still you tell me maybe That some day Well I'll be blue #05) Crickets: That'll Be The Day (1957) [1] {2} Linda Ronstadt #11 in 1976 Of course, the lead singer on this record is Buddy Holly. Linda also charted with two other songs that Buddy Holly made famous--"It Doesn't Matter Anymore," #47 in 1975, and "It's So Easy," #5 in 1977. Night after night I've been standing here alone Weeping my heart out till cold gray dawn Hoping that you're lonely and you'll come here too #06) Dorman, Harold: Mountain Of Love (1960) [21] {7} Johnny Rivers #9 in 1964 This song was also done by the alphabetically-fitting Ronnie Dove. I inten- tionally chose lyrics that are not in the Ronnie Dove version. While no entry gave Ronnie Dove as the only answer, BP OZ, Really Rockin' In Boston, and NAVAIRHEADS also mentioned his version. (Ronnie Dove is someone I should have included in GOLQ298, which featured several artists with Washington, DC, connections.) Well yonder comes Miss Rosie, boy How in the world do you know By the way she wears her apron, boy And the clothes she wooooorrrre #07) Evans, Paul: Midnite Special (1960) [16] {-} Johnny Rivers #20 in 1965 Jessica Raine: Folk/country standard with zillions of recorded versions. Jessica Raine also mentioned a version by Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), with which I am also familiar. Released on their album WILLY AND THE POOR BOYS, it was never a charting single. Some versions of this song, including Johnny Rivers', and some pressings of Paul Evans' recording, use the spelling "Midnight Special." I accepeted either spelling. Johnny Rivers sings "Miss Lucy." CCR sings "Miss Rosie." I'm puttin' you down baby And I'm goin' my way Forget about you baby I'm leavin' to stay #08) Everett, Betty: You're No Good (1963/64) [51] {n/c} Linda Ronstadt #1 in 1974 Linda's version entered the chart in 1974 and peaked in 1975. Casey Kasem (RIP) played it in the #1 spot on AMERICAN TOP 40 for the week of February 15, 1975. It was her only Billboard #1. Her only Billboard #2 as a solo artist was "When Will I Be Loved." I did not use the Everly Brothers' version of that song in this GOLQ, even though it was eligible for inclusion, because Paul Evans, Betty Everett, and the Everly Brothers are consecutively appearing artists in an alphabetization of all GOLQ-era artists. I used "When Will I Be Loved" once before when I wanted to feature a song remade by Linda, so I went with "You're No Good" this time. In case you're wondering, Johnny Rivers had one #1 hit, 1966's "Poor Side Of Town" (one of his first hits that wasn't a remake of an earlier hit). The 4 Seasons had five #1 hits, four in the GOLQ era and one announced as #1 by Casey Kasem in 1976. Frankie Valli had two solo #1s, both played by Casey Kasem in that spot in the 1970s. Empty nights echo your name Oh sometimes I wonder Will I ever be the same #09) Four Tops: Baby I Need Your Loving (1964) [11] {n/c} Johnny Rivers #3 in 1967 This was the first of two consecutively charting singles by Johnny that were Motown remakes. The other one is still to come in this GOLQ. But things have changed And I've found me somebody new Someone to make me forget about you And I'm tellin' you #10) Goldsboro, Bobby: It's Too Late (1966) [23] {-} Johnny Rivers uncharted single, B-side to some versions of "Summer Rain" Because this song is not generally associated with Johnny Rivers, I was not surprised that it was poorest-performing non-tie-breaker in this GOLQ. It's included in JOHNNY RIVERS ANTHOLOGY 1964-1977. Feel so bad baby Oh it hurts me When I think of how you love and desert me I'm the broken-hearted toy you play with #11) Hollies, The: I Can't Let Go (1966) [42] {-} Linda Ronstadt #31 in 1980 This song was written by Chip Taylor, about whom I wrote in GOLQ324, and Al Gorgoni. It was also recorded by: Evie Sands, who was never in the right place at the right time to have a big hit record: http://youtube.com/watch?v=m_Cc0qizNdc Nobody's Children, a Washington, DC-area-based group, whose version got airplay in their hometown: http://youtube.com/watch?v=DgTx0xDlGeM (song only) http://youtube.com/watch?v=u1BtVp7IT0c (introduction with information about the song) Gorgoni, Martin, And Taylor (the two writers plus Trade Martin): http://youtube.com/watch?v=-XyJuhIWWD8 Another song with which both Linda Ronstadt and the Hollies charted is in this GOLQ by another artist. I love you baby And if it's quite all right I need you baby To warm the lonely night I love you baby Trust in me when I say #12) Lettermen, The: Goin' Out Of My Head/Can't Take My Eyes Off You (1967/68) [7] {-} 4 Seasons Frankie Valli solo Frankie Valli's solo version of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" reached #2 earlier in 1967. Vito & the Salutations noted that the first song in this medley, "Goin' Out Of My Head," was also recorded by the artist of the next song in this GOLQ. The Lettermen also recorded the next song in this GOLQ. One reason I chose the 4 Seasons instead of the various members of the Osmond family as a mini- theme in this GOLQ is so I could use a Lettermen song to ensure that Little Anthony and the Imperials would be the answer for #13 (although, as I did for "Mountain Of Love," I though most, if not all, entries would identify the artist of the more famous version). You loved me before Please love me again I can't let you go back to him Please don't go Please don't go #13) Little Anthony and the Imperials: Hurt So Bad (1965) [10] {3} Linda Ronstadt #8 in 1980 The Lettermen's version peaked at #12 in 1969. So take a good look at my face You'll see my smile looks out of place #14) Miracles, The: The Tracks Of My Tears (1965) [16] {2} Johnny Rivers #10 in 67, Linda Ronstadt #25 in 75 This two-fer had to be in this GOLQ. If it had not been eligible, I would not have done these themes this time. This was the second of two consecutively charting singles by Johnny that were Motown remakes. In both cases, his version charted higher than the Motown original, which I had not known until I did this GOLQ. Linda Ronstadt also charted with another Miracles' remake, "Ooh Baby Baby," #7 in 1978, and another Motown remake, "Heat Wave," #5 in 1975. Ah those fishing boats With their sails afloat If I could only see That familiar sunrise Through sleepy eyes How happy I'd be #15) Orbison, Roy: Blue Bayou (1963) [29] {26} Linda Ronstadt #3 in 1977 A version of this song in Spanish by Roberto Jordan (who has recorded lots of 1960s and 1970s hits) is at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=T1rAwsJbu4U "Blue Bayou" and "You're No Good" are two songs I never knew until Linda Ronstadt did them. It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe It don't matter anyhow And it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe If you don't know by now #16) Peter, Paul & Mary: Don't Think Twice, It's All Right (1963) [9] {-} 4 Seasons #12 in 1965 as Wonder Who? Jessica Raine: Bob Dylan wrote it and just about everyone covered it. As some of you may know, "Don't Think Twice" (with this shorter title) by the Wonder Who? is my favorite version of any Bob Dylan song. I had never heard the Peter, Paul, and Mary version until a few years ago, but I like it, too. I begrudgingly accepted the spelling of "Alright," although it made me cringe to do so. I am seeing this spelling, which my 6th grade English grammar teacher told me is incorrect, way too much these days. There are several hit records in which this spelling is used, but this isn't one of them. For my darling I love you And I always will #17) Presley, Elvis: Love Me Tender (1956) [1] {3} Linda Ronstadt B-side to "Just One Look" Jessica Raine: Melody was lifted from folk/country standard "Aura Lee." Other artists who charted with this song in the GOLQ era: Henri Rene, #44 in 1956 Richard Chamberlain, #21 in 1962 (mentioned by Mike Weaver) Percy Sledge, #40, #35 R&B in 1967 After Linda's version of "Love Me Tender" was released, one of the Washington-area radio stations (probably WPGC) played an "electronic duet" of Linda and Elvis singing it together. I don't know if the segment starting around 15:27 in the following video is the same one, an official release, or a different splicing: http://youtube.com/watch?v=pXZ900QZ1XI Ah you said you'd be back in a big black limousine But you know I'm inclined to believe that's not the kind you mean 'Cause when you're fallin' down off of your cloud And you're just another face in the crowd They're gonna throw you away like last week's magazine #18) Rivers, Johnny: These Are Not My People (1969) [55] {-} First of two songs in this GOLQ that were written by Joe South, whose version you can find at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=s21TMf6PdKA Now the water's deep and wide Can't hold out long this way If I could spend a time Perhaps I'd find a way #19) Ronstadt, Linda, and the Stone Poneys: Up To My Neck In High Muddy Water (1968) [93] {-} I never heard of this song until it was used in a previous GOLQ. My first choice to represent Linda as an artist in this GOLQ was her only other charting song from this time period, the Stone Poneys' hit "Different Drum," but it had been used too recently in a GOLQ. Your heart belonged to only me But that was many tears ago Now your love is just a memory #20) Royal, Billy Joe: I Knew You When (1965) [14] {-} Linda Ronstadt #37 in 1982 Second of two songs in this GOLQ that were written by Joe South, whose version you can find at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=fhopqL9yauU If I had used songs remade by Osmonds' family members, this would have been a two-fer, because Donny Osmond charted with a version in 1971. I would be runnin' but my feet's too slow Young man rhythm got ahold of me too #21) Smith, Huey (Piano), and the Clowns: Rockin' Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu (1957) [52] {5} Johnny Rivers #6 in 72 I didn't know the original versions of some of Johnny's earliest hits, but later, as he remade more recent hits, I did know some of them. This is a song he remade in 1972 that I didn't know until he did his version. Cannot mend this heart of mine And I dare not drown my sorrow In the warm glow of your wine #22) Springfields, The: Silver Threads and Golden Needles (1962) [22] {-} Linda Ronstadt #67 in 74 I'm surprised that no one pointed out that Dusty Springfield first charted as a member of this group. One of the other members was her brother Tom. Many artists have recorded this song, including: Johnny Rivers, who did this song on one of his early albums recorded live at the Whiskey A-Go-Go. You can hear it at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=a9PZkUT1BjM The Cowsills did a version that reached #74 in 1969. I love their version, and in fact, I love just about every version I've ever heard of this song (ironically, except the Johnny Rivers version). You can hear their version at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=mSYSECCUSeY (from a TV appearance, but probably lip-synched to the charting recording) How could she tell he deceived her so well Pity she'll be the last one to know #23) Tremeloes: Silence Is Golden (1967) [11] {-} 4 Seasons B-side to "Rag Doll" So you see I really care-are-are Without you I'm nothin' Oh, oh #24) Troy, Doris: Just One Look (1963) [10] {3} Linda Ronstadt #44 in 1979 This charted twice for the Hollies--#98 in 1964 (when they probably got lost in the British Invasion shuffle) and #44 in 1967 (after they had become established hitmakers). They had two songs on the chart around the same time then--this song, on Imperial Records, which they had left recently, and "King Midas in Reverse" on their new label, Epic. The release of multiple singles at the same time, which worked for the Beatles, did not work so well for the Hollies, as the other song peaked even lower, at #51. Please please please please please Tell me you're going to #25) Williams, Maurice, & the Zodiacs: Stay (1960/61) [1] {3} 4 Seasons #16 in 1964 This was one of the first songs of which I knew two different versions, the two mentioned here. As with "Maybellene," I wanted the chance to correct an omission. When I used this song in GOLQ298, I omitted the title of the song from the results, even in what was supposed to be a corrected version. I am glad for the opportunity to use it again, with everything noted correctly. ------------ Tie-Breakers ------------ Well I'm puttin' that cotton in 11-foot sack Well I'm puttin' that cotton in 11-foot sack Well I'm puttin' that cotton in 11-foot sack With a 12-gauge shotgun at my back #T1) Allison, Mose, Trio: Parchman Farm (1957) [-] {-} This was done by many artists, including Johnny Rivers. It's included in JOHNNY RIVERS ANTHOLOGY 1964-1977. Vito & the Salutations, noted that it was originally released on his album MEANWHILE BACK AT THE WHISKY A-GO-GO. Other artists mentioned by various entries in addition to or instead of the Mose Allison Trio who did this are John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Blue Cheer (as "Parchment Farm"), Georgie Fame, Kingston Trio ("Parchment Farm Blues"), and Bobbie Gentry (noted by Mike weaver as being a gender altered version). Parchman Farm is a prison in Mississippi. Several characters in John Grisham novels have served time there, are serving time there, or face the prospect of serving time there. He said he'll be there right on time He'll be there come what may He'll take them to a puppet show The little one can't wait to go #T2) 4 Seasons, The, Featuring the "sound" of Frankie Valli: Saturday's Father (1968) [103] {-} From their album GENUINE IMITATION LIFE GAZETTE, which Mike Weaver noted. ============================================================================= This chart ranks the songs/artists from most to least recognized. The second number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that song (total points divided by number of entrants, to 2 decimal places). For compar- ison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale. The theme no doubt helped both of the tie-breakers plus "Up To My Neck In High Muddy Water" and maybe a few others. Rank Avg.
