RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #335 (GOLQ335)

Congratulations go out to the five entrants with perfect 500++ scores:
DEC & Friends, Delphi Trivia Club, EJ'S & Co., Really Rockin' In Boston,
and Village Idiots. They will each be receiving "Get Out Of Jail Free Cards"
as prizes. Unfortunately, the cards can only be used for the GOLQ penal
colony located in the 'Far-flung Isles Of Langerhans'. Its a rough place;
listening to disco will get you a night in the box.

More to the point, the theme was prisons, the prison system, and prisoners
both past and present. Everyone identified it. The four instances of
"arcane" relationships to the theme are artists who are or have
"done time" as noted in the answer section. These were the only artists
that came to mind, but there could well be others.

North East Ohio folks must be pretty honest, because I was not able to
work in my usual recognition for them and still maintain the theme.

GOLQ336 will be posted soon.

Regards and best of New Years to all

- Mike <golq335@golq.org>

an "x" indicates an incorrect guess, and a "." indicates no guess.

                GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #335 ANSWERS:

Answers are in the form:

    #number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B}

where:
    "peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
    "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
        (Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
        so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
    "xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ335/GOLQ335-01.mp3
#01) Berry, Chuck: "Nadine (Is It You?)" (1964) [23] {n/c}

     Chuck has been incarcerated on at least three occasions. Once for auto
     theft, once for violating the (ironically named) Mann Act and once for
     income tax evasion. Whether or not the Mann act charge was justified or
     was merely a part of the anti-black rock and roll movement seems unclear.

#02) Bland, Bobby: "Chains Of Love" (1969) [60] {9}

     The first of two "same named" songs in the quiz. See #7.

#03) Boone, Pat: "Delia Gone" (1960) [66] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ335/GOLQ335-04.mp3
#04) Brown, James And The Famous Flames: "Prisoner Of Love" (1963) [18] {6}

     James had several brushes with the law and served time for theft and
     assault on a police officer. Reportedly he had a number of domestic
     violence arrests as well This was my intended "two-fer" for both the
     song title and the artist.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ335/GOLQ335-05.mp3
#05) Charles, Ray: "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying" (1960) [95] {17}

     A distinctly different song than the Gerry and The Pacemakers tune
     of the same name.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ335/GOLQ335-06.mp3
#06) Dresslar, Len: "Chain Gang" (1956) [78] [-]

     Several entrants pointed out that Len was the voice of the "Jolly Green
     Giant" in TV commercials. Also the second of the "same named" song pairs,
     see #24.

#07) Drifters, The: "Chains of Love" (1960) [90] {-}

#08) Ford, Frankie: "Alimony" (1959) [97] {-}

#09) Fuller, Jerry: "Guilty Of Loving You" (1961) [94] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ335/GOLQ335-10.mp3
#10) Highwaymen, The: "The Bird Man" (1962) [64] {-}

     Narration by Burt Lancaster

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ335/GOLQ335-11.mp3
#11) Isley Brothers, The: "It's Your Thing" (1969) [2] {1}

     What is it with show biz types and their taxes? Group member Ron Isley
     "forgot" to pay his taxes and received a three year sentence as a result.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ335/GOLQ335-12.mp3
#12) Kingston Trio, The: "Bad Man Blunder" (1960) [37] {-}

     This is alternately listed as "Bad Man's Blunder" on LPs and foreign
     issues. Either title would have been completely acceptable. In light
     of recent events, the song's lyrics have lost a good bit of their
     humorous intentions.

#13) Lopez, Trini: "Jailer, Bring Me Water" (1964) [94] {n/c}

#19) Starr, Kay: "Good Book" (1956) [89] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ335/GOLQ335-20.mp3
#20) Stevens, Dodie: "Pink Shoe Laces" (1959) [3] {5}

#21) Storm, Warren: "The Prisoners Song" (1958) [81] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ335/GOLQ335-22.mp3
#22) Teddy Bears, The: "To Know Him, Is To Love Him" (1958/59) [1] {10}

     Group member Phil Spector is currently in the California prison
     system having been convicted of second degree murder in the death
     of Lana Clarkson.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ335/GOLQ335-23.mp3
#23) Van Dyke, Leroy: "If A Woman Answers (Hang Up The Phone" (1962) [35] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ335/GOLQ335-24.mp3
#24) Wilson, Jackie and Count Basie: "Chain Gang" (1968) [84] {37}

     Although I did not realize it when I constructed the quiz, I learned
     Jackie also had some brushes with the law leading to several arrests,
     including a "morals" charge. He also had trouble with the IRS. I don't
     know if any of these led to actual incarceration though.

#25) Yuro, Timi: "Gotta Travel On" (1963) [64] {n/c}

Tie-Breakers

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ335/GOLQ335-T1.mp3
#T1) Lettermen: "Allentown Jail"  (1963) [123] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ335/GOLQ335-T2.mp3
#T2) Youngsters, The: "Christmas In Jail" (1956) [-] {-}

     I thought I should include at least one seasonal song in the quiz! :)
     I used to work with a fellow who actually DID spend Christmas in jail,
     pretty much for reasons described in the song. He heard this on the
     radio once and asked me to send him the mp3. The whole experience
     caused him to give up the sauce, so I guess it turned into a positive
     thing for him.

The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized.
The first column indicates the average number of points scored on that song
(total points divided by number of entrants). For comparison purposes,
tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale.

I was a bit surprised that everyone recognized the instrumental break in
"Jailhouse Rock", but maybe the theme was a factor. I would have thought
"Back To School Again" would have been universally recognized; it
obviously wasn't.
