RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #349 (GOLQ349)
Congratulations to DEC & Friends and to Delphi Trivia Club, who tied for first
with perfect scores.
Just behind, by part of a tiebreaker (explanation below), were The EJ'S & Co.
and Village Idiots.
A note about partial artist credit for the audio clues: Each version of a song
sounds unique - the equivalent of each artist using slightly different lyrics.
I decided to give half-credit for a wrong artist who fits alphabetically.
E.g., for song #25, Zacharias gets 10/10 points, Welk or Zabach gets 5/10, and
Holmes or Vaughn gets 0/10. Similarly for #T2, Graham gets a "+" while
Jansch or Simon gets a "-".
Each song has one or more audio links (quality and permanence not guaranteed).
As always, thanks to everyone who entered! The March 2016 quiz (GOLQ #350)

Drummer Andy White died 11/9/15 at 85. He was an experienced session
player whom Ron Richards (George Martin's lieutenant) hired for the group's
9/11/62 recording session, due to the label's wariness about their new
drummer (some guy named Starkey). In that session, Andy drummed on what
became the standard version of "Love Me Do" (Ringo drummed on the original
9/4/62 version, but was relegated to tambourine this time), as well as on
this, the B-side of their debut single (with Ringo on maracas).

He sang for The Valentines in the '50s, and then had a long stint with The
Coasters (1968-2009). Ronnie's voice contributed to quite a range of songs,
from Barry Mann's "Who Put the Bomp" to Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes."

1947 (and Ol' Blue Eyes recorded it again in 1957). Chris Montez's version
subsequently charted in 1966. All these versions other than Ford's have

The U.S. single on Press (with a listed running time of 3:00) truncated the
song by fading the ending early. Presumably, this was due to the unwritten
rule that Top-40 stations would not play songs longer than 3 minutes. The
U.K. single (Decca) had the full ending; no time is on that label, but it
runs around 3:20.

The earlier version, recorded in July '64, was vetoed by Berry Gordy, who
didn't like the arrangement. The released hit version was a re-recording
done in August. The slower July version has its charms, but to my ears,
the drum fills seem intrusive; also, it sorely misses Diana's intro.

Written & first recorded by jazz guitarist Johnny Smith in 1954 (with title
punctuated as "Walk, Don't Run!"). Chet Atkins recorded it in 1957
(as "Walk, Don't Run") for his "Hi-Fi in Focus" LP; this was the version
that Bob Bogle was familiar with and used as the basis for the Ventures'
rendition. Bogle played lead guitar on this recording; the following year,
he permanently moved to bass, swapping with Nokie Edwards.
The group's original drummer, George Babbitt, had to drop out in 1959 when
they started playing nightclubs; he was underage (17), whereas his bandmates
were in their 20s. (He did OK, though, retiring in 2000 from the Air Force
as a 4-star general!) For this recording, they used a drummer of their
acquaintance named Skip Moore, who declined an offer to join the group
full-time. Prior to the session, he was given an option of a one-time $25
payment or 25% of the recording royalties; he unfortunately chose the
former. Howie Johnson was then hired as their next permanent drummer.
The Ventures' 1964 version ("Walk - Don't Run '64") was also a top-10 hit.
Smith himself recorded a new version on his 1967 "Kaleidoscope" LP.

Written by Davy Graham, who recorded it on his 1962 debut EP "3/4 AD".
"Angi" was named after his then-girlfriend. Bert Jansch's 1965 rendition
gives the title as "Angie."
Paul Simon's version is from Simon & Garfunkel's '66 "Sounds of Silence" LP.
In the original LP release, the song is listed as "Angie"; the back cover
notes say "written by Davy Graham, one of England's greatest jazz/blues
guitarists," but the label lists Jansch as composer. Subsequent editions
of the LP fixed the label credit to Graham, but inexplicably changed the
title to "Anji."
