RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #351 (GOLQ351)

Congratulations to Delphi Trivia, Really Rockin' In Boston, and the Village
Idiots who tied for first place in what by all accounts was a difficult quiz.

The intended theme was 50's and 60's television personalities who were not
(at least initially) noted for their vocal ability. Everyone identified it
in one form or another. A second possible (and unintended) theme was that a
number of the songs were of the "spoken word" genre. I guess that is not
surprising given the lack of vocal talents of some of these "golden throats".
A few entrants identified the minor theme.

The May quiz (GOLQ 352) will be posted soon.

Thanks to everyone for playing.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #351 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd shout and yell and holler like them
I wore moccasins on my feet
And I'd make believe I was under a teepee
Every time I went to sleep
#01) Allen, Rex: "Don't Go Near The Indians" (1962) [17] {-} <164>

Rex portrayed Dr. Bill Baxter in the TV series "Frontier Doctor". He is
also the voice of the "Carousel Of Progress" attraction at Disney World.
Kind of creepy since he passed away sixteen years ago.
(A [semi] spoken word song.)

As an aside, the song may be considered a trifle politically incorrect
in some circles, particularly here in NE Ohio where the ball club has the
Chief Wahoo logo. The Wahoo insignia has pretty much vanished from the
ballpark except on fan paraphernalia where it is worn whenever possible.

There's just one thing that they
Do not seem to understand
Why can't they get it through their heads
I need a helping hand
#02) Avant-Garde, The: "Naturally Stoned" (1968) [40] {-} <252><323>

Group consisted of Chuck Woolery and Elkin Fowler. Chuck was the host
of several game shows; he was the original host of "Wheel Of Fortune"
Currently Chuck is a pitchman for creams and devices to (allegedly)
cure the aches and pains of the old and creaky (like me).

He had a one room shack
Not fer from us
And well, we was about
As poor as him
#03) Brennan, Walter: "Old Rivers" (1962) [5] {-} <114>

Probably most memorable as "Granpappy Amos" on the "Real McCoys".
(Spoken word song.)
For a fun treatment of this song, go here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1OJCLbKyKE

No noise like that
Let me straighten you
The drive-in movie
You and me on the back seat of my motorcycle
#04) Byrnes, Edd, and Friend: "Like I Love You" (1959) [42] {-} <299>

Edd played the hipster valet on "77 Sunset Strip". I have
read (but cannot verify) that the "friend" on the phone is
Joanie Sommers.
(Spoken word song)

I need you so
That I could die
I love you so
And that is why
#05) Chamberlain, Richard: "All I Have To Do Is Dream" (1963) [14] {-} <325>

Portrayed "Dr. Kildare" in the TV series of the same name.

And there she was
Sitting on a chunk-a ice
Eating a frozen fish
And dipping her friskies
In whale blubber
(http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ351/GOLQ351-06.mp3)
#06) Colder, Ben: "Don't Go Near The Eskimos" (1962) [62] {-}

Ben Colder (AKA Sheb Wooley) portrayed the role of "Pete Nolan" in
"Rawhide". He recorded the better known "Purple People Eater" under
his (original) "Sheb Wooley" moniker.
(Spoken word)
The song is an obvious parody of #1 above and today would be VERY
politically incorrect.

You'll find by and by
Deep within my heart
You're the only one
That I adore
#07) Crawford, Johnny: "Rumors" (1962/63) [12] {-} <135>

Johnny portrayed Mark McCain on "The Rifleman".

She's not much on glamor
And she should improve her grammar
Still I sigh and stammer
And my heart beats Like a little ol' hammer
#08) Darren, Jimmy: "Gidget" (1959) [41] {-} <99>

Darren portrayed "Officer James Corrigan" on the police series
"T. J. Hooker", and less notably, on a few of the later "Star Trek"
incarnations he was Vic Fontaine, holodeck performer.

For an odd alternate version (from the Donna Reed Show)
of Darren's "Goodbye Cruel World":

Don't want a house in the country
With lots of curtains and frills
Don't want a house in the mountains
Just a shack up in the hills
(http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ351/GOLQ351-09.mp3)
#09) Dolenz, Micky: "Don't Do It" (1967) [75] {-} <185>

Other than the obvious "Monkees", Micky played "Corky" (billed
as Mickey Braddock) on "Circus Boy" where he co-starred with
"Bimbo The Elephant".

Take your little heart
Tear it all apart
Make the teardrops fall
From your eyes
And You'll know how I feel
#10) Duke, Patty: "Whenever She Holds You" (1964) [64] {-}

Sadly, Ms. Duke passed away just after this quiz was written.
She played both identical cousins in "The Patty Duke Show". For
me, the theme song to this show has always been an 'ear worm'.
What a crazy pair!

He just told me so last night
Now each star I see
Belongs to me
And they're all shining
Twice as bright
#11) Fabares, Shelley: "Johnny Loves Me" (1962) [21] {-} <111><276>

Shelley was "Mary Stone" on the long running "Donna Reed Show".

Whoa
See my feeling is that while I love a good snare drum
I feel that volume-wise
It's just a little bit too much what you're doing there
See? See, see what I mean
Now you try and hold it down will ya
I 'preciate it.
#12) Freberg, Stan: "The Yellow Rose Of Texas" (1955) [16] {-}

Stan had his own show as a summer replacement for Jack Benny.
(Spoken Word)
Per Team Teitelbaum: Alvin Stoller, who gets label credit for
"Yankee snare drumming," was a prominent jazz drummer.
He also played the snare drum on Mitch Miller's #1 hit
version of the song.
To me, Freberg was the epitome of witty satire. For an example
of how Stan was a bit ahead of his time:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLlTlYfqQV4

Tell all your troubles
And take your time
He's in no hurry
He doesn't mind
It matters not
How bad you've been
(http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ351/GOLQ351-13.mp3)
#13) Greene, Lorne: "The Man" (1965) [72]  {-}

Best remembered as the father on "Bonanza". Later as the
the leader on the remake of the "Battlestar Galactica" series.
(Spoken Word)

Yeah, I think, friends
By this time, that it's pretty clear
With her feeling romantic
And automatic record changers and everything
That she ain't got that boy in there
To eat no cake and ice cream
#14) Griffith, Andy: "Make Yourself Comfortable" (1955) [26] {-}

Andy was the sheriff of Maybery in the "Andy Griffith Show".
Later he portrayed a lawyer in "Matlack". Label credit for the
vocal portions is to Jean Wilson.
(Spoken Word - mostly)

For every grain of sand upon the beach
I've got a kiss for you
And I've got more left over
For each star
That twinkles in the blue
#15) Ives, Burl: "Pearly Shells (Popo O Ewa)" (1964) [60] {n/c}

Played the title role in the easily forgotten 1965 TV
series "O. K. Crackerby".

Give me a break
Save a girl a heartache
Let me learn to hate you
Let me tear your letters
Before I ever read 'em
And when the phone is ringing
Let me walk away and laugh
#16) Lee, Michele: "L. David Sloane" (1968) [52] {-} <305>

Eleven years after this song came out, Michele was a
regular in the series "Knots Landing". There is not a
lot of vocal range in this song so (IMO) this is a "darn
near" spoken word song.

(Seven) Always try to remember
The way he feels inside
But, if you should forget
Let your conscience be your guide
(http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ351/GOLQ351-17.mp3)
#17) MacArthur, James: "The Ten Commandments Of Love" (1963) [94] {-}

"Book 'em Dano". James played the role of "Danny Williams" on
"Hawaii Five-O" This version of the song is quite a bit
different than the better known Moonglows version; essentially
a different set of commandments. The author credit on both
labels is the same though (Marshall Paul).
(Spoken Word)

Now and for always
Darling, in all ways
Now and my whole life through
Place no one above me
Live just to love me
#18) Maharis, George: "Love Me As I Love You" (1962) [54] {-}

George tooled down the highway in a Corvette in "Route 66".

I was that soldier
#19) Martindale, Wink: "Deck Of Cards" (1959/60) [7] {-} <21><149><287>

Wink is a ubiquitous game show host.
(Spoken Word)

Well, I've just been thinkin' things over
How I have loved you for years
My life just don't seem worth livin'
Since you have left me in tears
#20) Mitchell, Guy: "Knee Deep In The Blues" (1957) [16] {-}

Guy had a brief role as "George Romack" in the short lived series
"Whispering Smith".

Look up
Is that the moon we see
Can't be
Looks like the sun to me
#21) Nelson, Ricky: "It's Late" (1959) [9] {30} <31><123>

Ricky went from wiseacre kid to teen idol on "The Adventures Of
Ozzie and Harriet".
With his band leader dad and singer mom it is not surprising
that he developed as a singer himself. His singing
appearances on the show may have kept the show alive for more seasons
than it might otherwise have been on.

When I take
My baby home at night
I can't wait
To kiss and hold her tight
But by then
The time begins to drag
When she starts searching through her bag
She says just a moment please
#22) Petersen, Paul: "She Can't Find Her Keys" (1962) [19] {-} <60><291>

Paul played Jeff Stone (along with Shelly Fabares) on the
Donna Reed Show.

We kissed on the shore
And you said you'd be mine forever more
Then we strolled hand in hand
And we dreamed and we planned
#23) Smith, Roger: "Beach Time" (1959) [64] {-}

Roger was detective Jeff Spencer on "77 Sunset Strip".

(Six) Your freckled nose
(Seven) The way you say you care
(Eight) Your crazy clothes
#24) Stevens, Connie: "Sixteen Reasons" (1960) [3] {10} <48><297>

"Cricket Blake" on "Hawaiian Eye".

My friends all know it
How I adore him
I've whispered to angels
What I'd do for him
He is the answer
#25) Storm, Gale: "Teen Age Prayer" (1955/56) [6] {-} <209>

Title role in "My Little Margie" of early 50s TV.

#T1) Grady, Don, with The Windupwatch Band: "The Children Of St. Monica"
      (1966/67) [132] {-}

Grady was Robbie Douglas on "My Three Sons".

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ351/GOLQ351-T2.mp3
#T2) Burt Ward: "Boy Wonder I Love You" (1966) [-] {-}

Frank Zappa, which could explain a lot. For those among
you who are truly masochistic here is the flip side:

who play these quizzes.
