RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #366 (GOLQ366)
Congratulations to The Village Idiots, the only team to correctly identify all
25 songs in the main part of the quiz, as well as the two tie-breakers. For
what seems like the first time in a long time, the tie-breakers actually served
their purpose by separating out a winner. Identifying the two tie-breakers
allowed the Village Idiots to edge out Will McCorry, who also identified all
twenty five songs in the main part of the quiz, but skipped the tie-breakers.
Impressive entries by both teams, nonetheless.
Also with impressive scores were the Delphi Trivia Club and DEC And Friends,
each of whom identified all 27 songs but mis-identified one of the artists in
the main part of the quiz.
Overall, I was surprised that the quiz proved more difficult than I
anticipated, especially after my previous Beatles theme quiz (GOLQ-362), in
which every team got a perfect score. Perhaps not having a theme contributed
to the difficulty, and kept some regulars from participating this month.
Still, in spite of the difficulty, nine songs - a third of the quiz - were
identified by every team. Maybe that is not a bad mix, regarding level of
difficulty.
As always, thanks to everyone who entered. I missed seeing the entries of some
of our favorite participants, and hope all will play again in August. Mike
Weaver has already posted the August quiz (GOLQ #367).

Note: From the self titled album, considered a rare but valued classic by
1960's folk music purists. Greenbriar Boys included founder John Herald,
considered one of the finest flatpickers of the era, and who provided many
impressive guitar solo breaks on albums by Ian & Silvia and others. Full
credit was also given for the Country Gentlemen as the artist because, although
they were not my intended artist (I was not even aware they recorded the song),
their version is similar and their lyrics match mine perfectly. There are many
other cover versions, some of which were named by several teams, with lyrics
that were close but different enough not to qualify.

#T2) New Christy Minstrels, The: "Julianne" (1963?)
Note: From the album "New Christy Minstrels Tell Tall Tales! Legends &
Nonsense." I have long been a sucker for this somewhat corny but intriguing
ballad about a handsome but poor young man who promises his sweetheart,
Julianne, that he will search for silver to "fashion her a ring," but instead
has a tryst with another woman, leaving Julianne alone in their cabin in the
woods. You can tell by the lyrics I posted that the story does not end well.
The lyrics were written by founder and leader Randy Sparks of the New Christy
Minstrels on one of their most successful albums. The melody is an uptempo and
haunting rendition of the old folk song, "I Am A Poor Wayfaring Stranger."
