"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart. (Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65, so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").) "xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'll buy you a diamond ring, my friend If it makes you feel alright #01) Beatles, The: "Can't Buy Me Love" (1964) [1] {n/c} <125> I keep straining my ears to hear a sound Maybe someone is digging underground #02) Bee Gees, The: "New York Mining Disaster 1941 (Have You Seen My Wife, Mr. Jones)" (1967) [14] {-} <32><316> With music and words I've been playing For you I have written a song To be sure that you'll know what I am saying I'll translate as I go along #03) Bennett, Tony: "Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words)" (1965) [84] {-} <170> You'd better be smart You've gotta make up your mind Stop breaking my heart And leave the others behind #04) Clark, Petula: "You'd Better Come Home" (1965) [22] {-} <255> I couldn't sleep a wink for tryin' I saw the rising of the sun And all night long my heart was cryin' #05) Coasters, The: "Young Blood" (1957) [8] {1} <22><136><268> Well, I been a-doing my homework all week long And now the house is empty and my folks are gone #06) Cochran, Eddie: "C'mon Everybody" (1958) [35] {-} <13><154> Why I want you Heaven knows Who will love you With a love true #07) Nat 'King' Cole: "Ramblin' Rose" (1962) [2] {7} <85> Note: Howard astutely noted that the correct lyric for line three is, "Though I love you," not, "Who will love you," which is from the previous verse. This glitch did not appear to prevent anyone from identifying the song. She's my sugartime baby I'm her lollipop #08) Darin, Bobby: "Queen Of The Hop" (1958/59) [9] {6} <28><107><287> Everybody knows That Baby's got new clothes But lately I see her ribbons and her bows Have fallen from her curls #09) Dylan, Bob: "Just Like A Woman" (1966) [33] {-} <121><231> I've been made blue I've been lied to #10) Everly Brothers, The: "When Will I Be Loved" (1960) [8] {-} <35><245> Yeah, today is gonna, gonna be the day I want you all to understand Now I am a man #11) Fabian: "Turn Me Loose" (1959) [9] {-} <21><228> When idle gossip pulls your arm And the clouds of doubt begin to form #12) Fontane Sisters: "Rock Love" (1955) [13] {-} And when our year has ended And I have gone away You'll often speak about me #13) Garnett, Gale: "We'll Sing In The Sunshine" (1964) [4] {-} <4><134><295> Climbed up on a ladder To get a better view And bless my soul to my surprise My darling, it was you #14) Jones, Jimmy: "That's When I Cried" (1960) [83] {-} <164> Note: Follow-up to "Good Timin'" Meet the gang at Joe's Café If she's willing We'll go steady right away #15) Keller, Jerry: "Here Comes Summer" (1959) [14] {-} <36><191> A wailin' song and a good guitar The only things that I understand, poor boy The only things that I understand #16) Kingston Trio, The: "Greenback Dollar" (1963) [21] {-} <32><272> Thought I was in love before And then you moved in next door #17) Lawrence, Steve: "Pretty Blue Eyes" (1959) [9] {-} <44><141><239> And when we've had a few more days (when we've had a few more days) I wonder if I'll get to say (wonder if I'll get to say) #18) Lovin' Spoonful, The: "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice" (1965/66) [10] {-} <63><142><248> I love your face (it's in the right place) I love your mind (that's very kind) #19) Ofarim, Esther & Abi: "Cinderella Rockefella" (1968) [68] {-} <148><329> Now, Samson told Delilah Loud and clear Keep your cotton-pickin' fingers out my curly hair Oh, yeah #20) Presley, Elvis, with The Jordanaires: "Hard Headed Woman" (1958) [1] {2} <74><206> To really live, you must almost die And it happened just that way with me #21) Robbins, Marty: "The Hanging Tree" (1959) [38] {-} <173> Win a little Lose a little And maybe sing the blues a little #22) Roommates, The: "The Glory Of Love" (1961) [49] {-} <62> Your kisses taste like it's goodbye My eyes know they're gonna cry #23) Shirelles, The: "A Thing Of The Past" (1961) [41] {26} <268> Please write me one line Tell me your love is still only mine #24) Teen Queens, The: "Eddie My Love" (1956) [14] {2} <9><175><201> I'm writing this letter To someone unknown So if you should find it And if you're alone #25) Twitty, Conway: "Lonely Blue Boy" (1959/60) [6] {27} <45><129><233> ______ Tie-Breakers ------------- He resembles George Harrison of the Beatles But he wears his hair tied in a small bow at the back #T1) Hair, The Original Broadway Cast: "Frank Mills" (1969) {-} Note: Given that having "Hair Soundtrack" as the artist is somewhat vague, I also gave credit for naming a specific artist who performed the song in the play and recorded during the GOLQ period of eligibility. Now my mother and my father They might hear if I stay here too long One kiss and we'll part Then you better be going Although I hate to see you go #T2) McGuire Sisters, The: "Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight" (1954) [8] {-} Note: I felt a bit sacrilegious using this cover version of the great Spaniels original, but I wanted to avoid having to give credit for multiple cover artists. So, I chose this version for two reasons: 1) It uses lyrics tailored for a female artist, which distinguishes this version from that of any male artists, Spaniels included; and, 2) The McGuire Sisters actually had the highest charted version on the Billboard pop chart, at #8. Spaniels version made it only to #24 on the R&B chart. Ironically, I learned that Sunny Gale also had a female version, though her lyrics for this bridge differ from that of the McGuires. _____________________________________________________________________________ The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized.
