RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #377 (GOLQ377)

Congratulations to Delphi Trivia Club and Village Idiots, who tied for first
by throwing perfect games - 27 up, 27 down!

Just behind were The EJ'S & Co., missing just one regular song; they finished a
tie-breaker ahead of Really Rockin' In Boston.

Each song has one or more audio links (quality and permanence not guaranteed).

As always, thanks to everyone who entered! The July 2018 quiz (GOLQ #378)
will be posted soon.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #377 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

Written by Duke Ellington as an instrumental ("Never No Lament"), which he
& his orchestra recorded in 1940. Lyrics (by Bob Russell) were added in
1942, at which time the song acquired its familiar title. Vocal version
was a hit in 1943, most notably by The Ink Spots. Of the many recorded
versions of this standard (Jessica Raine cited one by Nat "King" Cole),
only one other charted during the GOLQ era (Tab Hunter, 1957).

    LaLa Brooks.

Instrumental rendition was first recorded in 1959 as "Can't Sit Down" by
The Bim Bam Boos. The first to chart (also instrumental) was by the
Philip Upchurch Combo in 1961; this featured two players (Upchurch on guitar
and Cornell Muldrow on organ) who were also on the Bim Bam Boos version.

      (1969) [4] {2} <173>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tSyzTIJ82g

Edwin Hawkins died 1/15/18 at 74. In 1967, he co-founded the Northern
California State Youth Choir of the Church of God in Christ. They recorded
an album, "Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord," as a fund-raiser so they
could enter a 1968 gospel competition.

The LP found its way to Abe Kesh, a San Francisco DJ, who particularly
liked this one track, and gave it broad exposure. Due to enthusiastic
listener response, the group got a recording contract, now billed as the
Edwin Hawkins Singers. As Hawkins told an interviewer, "It was recorded
on a friend's little two-track machine. It was never intended for
    commercial purposes at all."

assembled the original lineup in 1964. The single edit is shortened from
the full version of the song on the "Days of Future Passed" LP, wherein the
track is entitled "Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?)".

original release, the writing credit shows his real name (Francis Zambon).

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fy3kJt_tQrY (Spanky and Our Gang)

Gene Pistilli, who co-wrote the song with Terry Cashman, died 12/26/17.
The trio of Cashman, Pistilli and West recorded the original version
for their 1967 "Bound to Happen" LP.

I can turn back the hands of time, you better believe I can

#20) Temptations, The: "I Can't Get Next To You" (1969) [1] {1} <101><247>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jn04mFFkXmg

Dennis Edwards, who replaced David Ruffin in 1968, died 2/3/18 at 74.

The group trades lines in each verse. In this excerpt, the order is:
Dennis Edwards, Otis Williams, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams. (Bass
Melvin Franklin gets his turn in the earlier verses.)

#21) Troggs, The: "Wild Thing" (1966) [1] {-} <40><246>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rxDOncgSrY (Wild Ones, 1965)

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5Fk5hbourM (Chip & Reg & Carrie, 2002)

Written by Chip Taylor, and first recorded in 1965 by The Wild Ones, the
house band at NYC nightclub "Arthur." (Although some sources mention
Jordan Christopher as vocalist, he had already left the band by the time
they recorded this song; vocals were by Chuck Alden.)

The Troggs' hit version emerged on both the Fontana & Atco labels. The
Atco pressing erroneously credits the group's lead singer, Reg Presley, as
the composer. The B-side, "With a Girl Like You," was written by Reg.

Last link is a live rendition by Chip Taylor and the late Reg Presley,
along with singer/violinist Carrie Rodriguez (who has recorded/toured
extensively with Chip). Reg is seen doing his iconic ocarina solo!

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQamRxRj6PE (Sammy Turner, 1959)

Song was a hit in 1948/49 for four different artists (most successfully by
Sammy Kaye), based on its use in the Disney film "So Dear to My Heart."
It actually is a centuries-old folk song, with many (sometimes bawdy)
    variants.

#23) Vogues, The: "The Land Of Milk And Honey" (1966) [29] {-} <173>

Bill Burkette, the group's lead singer, died 3/1/18 at 75.

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OECHWapxJ4 (Olympics, 1965)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsWYxPcTzRI (Young Rascals, 1966)

Original version of the song by Lemme B. Good (composed by Rudy Clark) has
the familiar melody, but almost entirely different lyrics. The Olympics
recorded the song with updated lyrics (by Artie Resnick) a month later.

I thought the words of love we used to say were lost to time
Oh, baby, baby, baby, I'll be good to you
If you would only try again to love me too
Our love was such a sweet and gentle thing

#T1) Free Design, The: "Kites Are Fun" (1967) [114] {-} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_OXAOILYq0

The group, comprising the Dedrick siblings, achieved little commercial
success in their original late-'60s/early-'70s run. "Kites Are Fun" was
also the name of their debut LP. The single only bubbled under the Hot 100,
but garnered a respectable #33 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Decades
later, a resurgence of interest in their music spurred them to regroup in
    the early 2000's.

I used to be spellbound in your arms
With all of your conniving, you lost your charm
You built the flame that warmed my heart
But your lying and cheating has torn us apart

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTtpHlkZOio (the song, 1963)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R59TevgzN3k (the ad, 2017)

Like a few million other listeners, I first became aware of this great
obscure "Northern Soul" tune via its inclusion in a 2017 Samsung ad.
